Yes he was. Started back Wed. Noticed Blakely in those photos. Good to see him back into it as a 5th year player.

Also a promising photo of Jesse Hogan running.
Hogan running bothers me. I know it's conservative, but almost want him to just walk up until after Christmas. The more rest model for his injury. But can't always wrap them in cotton wool. But it has been 4-5 months since his injury..

I think he is going to be the real improver next season. He would have learnt a few good lessons last season
Agree. Now that the wing positions are open to debate, he can really push to make a B22 spot. His kicking is actually pretty good when he knows his positioning. He got a lot of the ball early in the games he played, before fizzling out towards the end of most games.

Based on the numerous photos that are included of Blake Acres in the training gallery as well as how involved and hard working he is during training, the guy has already impressed me and I already feel he's going to come so good next season. Quickly becoming one of my favourites on the team.

I got to check out the second half of training today. I think most on here will really like the intent I saw with the training session. It was bloody hot so I'm excusing the poor execution at times but what we seem to be trying to do looks really exciting (and in alignment with what most would expect from a senior coach coming from the WC and Collingwood systems).

As I indicated in my training report from last week one of the drills then was about improving decision making, choosing the best player at 45 to kick to. Today I was happy to see a much larger drill involving forward line movement after the ball was effectively "cleared" from a group of mids kicking amongst each other. The player movement looked great and players looked so much coordinated with their patterns than I've seen in the past and were creating space for each other. Once our players get used to it and start hitting their kicks our inside 50 efficiency could improve considerably. Although we have no tall forwards in main training yet so we need to be patient.

Another drill I liked was about fluid ball movement with short sharp kicking, mostly at 45s but also a willingness to launch long to an open target or hit up a short leading target directly at the ball carrier. It wasn't done under enormous pressure but the ball moved bloody fast at times. There was very limited running with the ball as players were instead prioritising finding the easy kick first. Quality of execution varied greatly but the intent looked good. All seems a kind of timely change given the loss of line breaking runners BHill and Langdon.

There was also a fair bit of goal kicking practice whilst I was there. Everything I saw today was focussed on the offensive side of our game. It will be interesting to see whether we will change much from Lyon's defensive structures. Given the huge emphasis on attack I'm assuming JLo will only tinker around the edges on that part of the game.

Quite a few doing laps most of the time I was there, including Hogan, Hill, Logue, Blakely, Cox, Giro and Dixon. We know Tabs was there earlier but I didn't see him later in the session, so assume he went into the gym. Giro has definitely worked hard over the off season. Hogan was moving pretty well considering it is so early in pre-season and not long since his last surgery. He was also chiming in with feedback on some of the drills from afar at times which was great to see. Hill just glides over the surface, although the heat looked pretty draining at times. He looked unencumbered in some of agility work they had him do but don't want to jinx it. Logue is in good physical shape but didn't see him do much other than run today.

Acres stood out again today. Has a big body but he just has a presence about him (not dissimilar to Fyfe). He did some running at the end with Walters who he appears to have built a solid relationship with already. I couldn't find Aish until he did laps at the end well out in front of his fellow senior players. He is another smooth mover, and looks in ripping nick. Hamling was involved in the main session and followed the three above doing laps at the end. He is just an absolute professional in everything he does. Matera and Hughes were the other players that don't need to be back yet that did the main session today (unless I missed someone?).

Happy to report given anchor man 's comments above that Carter impressed me today. He was pushing hard to put pressure on in one of the late drills when he really didn't need to. Maybe someone had a word to him? Seems very close with Roger Hayden. Crowden was also a workhorse pushing that bit harder than everyone in the run throughs after 11am when the thermometer was starting to hit the mid 30s. Guy certainly can launch bullet passes by foot as well - if he could do it under AFL pressure he really would be a weapon. Liked watching Hughes today as well. Didn't appear affected at all by the heat and even showing bursts of speed to close ground and intercept with one hand effortlessly. Not sure Tucker has an ounce of fat on him anymore, so assume his new aerodynamic haircut was the only thing left to shave some milliseconds off his running.

The only thing that confused me a bit is them having big Darcy doing a fair bit of strength work with the big tyre at the end. He looks like he has all the tools except endurance to me. Expected to see him running laps but apart from some short runs he didn't move that much the whole time I was watching. I'm sure there is a reason that I'm not aware of.

The three 1-4yr players I didn't see were Meek, Valente and Duman. I may have just missed recognising Taylin from afar but assume the other two were in rehab inside. It was really good to see Sturt out there in the main session though. He looked a bit rusty but I'm still expecting to see an early debut for him next year. Pretty sure Ryan was out there doing everything so doesn't seem to be carrying anything this pre-season. Brayshaw, Cerra, Banfield, Switta, Shultz, Bewley, Watson, O'Reilly and North were all out there but didn't see enough to report in any more detail.

Any more stupid arguments in this thread about our players and training reports like this will quickly dry up ;) Use a different thread please.

Anyone who has been to training have any thoughts on Dillon O'Reilly?
When I was there on Monday I thought that he worked really hard, didn't make many mistakes from what I saw and gave his all in everything. Looking to be solid, hopefully he gets a good run in the Thunder's forward line to kick off the season and maybe get a game later in the season.

Thanks for that! Hard to get any info or knowledge on him from over East.

I was only down there for a while, but the thing that stood out for me was Tabs' running. He pumped out lap after lap, then end to end runs, then more laps - all at good pace. I pity the poor defender who has to try to keep up with Tabs providing he can stay fit this year.

Rehab / modified programme group was Travis Colyer, Luke Valente, Stephen Hill, Hugh Dixon and Stephan Giro. I am getting a bit worried about Luke Valente's groin issues - it seems like he is still having problems even after missing most of last year. Hope he is able to get back because he is a great size and kicks well off both feet. I guess that's why he slipped through to us in the draft, but he is only a bargain if he gets out on the park consistently.

wayToGo_ has given a great report so I don't really have much to add.

Tell Tabs to get in the pool and limit impact to his shins! Nervous through the roof. He’s a great runner but don’t want him to break down.
Jokes aside, he has trimmed down a bit. Leaner. Hogan too. That’s good to see, less impacting on their hips and legs.

Running on grass with joggers is farely low impact but yeah I get nervous for him too needs a big year

Was it repeat efforts with the tyre?

There's different kinds of endurance and they may have been working on something with a bit more specificity to the repeat effort wrestling required in his role.

Ok guys, this thread is about training, coffee that's drunk at training, and the best place to get vanilla slice after training.

Unless McCarthy's at training, and you want to talk about something he did at training take it to the whipping boy thread, or a McCarthy thread.

If you want to talk shit at each other, take it to the melt thread.

If you want to get offended about something tiny because you're soft, take it to the SRP board.

I will start thread banning a lot of people from this thread if I have to.

Tabs looks cuddly and super ready every ******* preseason.

He is the personification of this rebuild, preseason excitement, brief moments of excellence, then the wheel quickly fall off.
If he played in a team that could kick the ball into the forward fifty would have averaged 2.5 golas a game easily last season. Averaged 8 marks and 16.6 posessions with 1.4 goals last year, while being free more times per game than any freo tall in the forward line since Pav's hey days. He doesnt need to get better to be an outstanding tall forward. The delivery to him does. Gotta be quietly confident that the delivery should improve significantly next year. If that happens Tabs will be in our best half a dozen players.

Managed to get down today for a while.
Waytogo covered everything better than I can.
Two points, the coaches are much more involved . Pointing out mistakes, pointing to where they want players and talking to players one on one.
Also during the goal kicking drill a few got into some sort competitive fun. Not only does this make training fun but also puts pressure to kick the goal. Something I believed has been missing for awhile.
