Yeah and why they are best 22. I see witherden and answerth competing for birchsll role once he is moved on. While answerth has sh*t disposal I feel he takes less unnecessary risks with it but provides much more athletically than poor old withers. If witherden builds his body better he would be a nice replacement when the great frog retires.

I'm hoping Payne is the one that steps into Lester's place. I like the balance of our side better when Gardiner plays as a third tall. Payne is a decent kick too.

I know you are Ryan’s No 1 fan, but I can’t have he is a better kick than Witho. If Ryan kicks to his limitations he is fine.

Exhibit A - the 45 degree kick to Zorko that have away the Richmond 2nd goal last Friday. Commentators gave Dayne a bad wrap - the kick was horrendous & shouldn’t have been attempted.

I agree Withos kicking can be overrated, but I would much prefer him to be taking a risk than Ryan in this skill. Having a great year though Ryan, & well done KZ for sticking fat.
The kick to Zorko was GOLD. All he had to do was pick it up and move it on.

I think that Witherden had a bath water problem, in that he was drinking too much of his own. It is interesting that when Dayne Zorko was describing Ryan in a media piece recently (I posted it in Lester’s player thread) he talked about his character, support for team mates and leadership at the club. I contrast this with the unedifying spectacle of Witherden giving Bastinac an obvious serve during the North Melbourne game in Melbourne last year. I know which of the two I would prefer to have at the Lions if it came down to a choice between Lester and Witherden.

People scoffed, but I’d still love to see Payne go forward for a trial.

It’s only those rumour pages on twitter/Facebook that have mentioned about McStay (possibly) being forced out.

I also saw Lachie Hunter’s name mentioned on there today, which doesn’t mean much other than Caro said we were interested earlier in the year.

I said the other day I still think we are light on in the midfield (depth wise), but if we could somehow work it out to gain another ready to go midfielder this trade period, then I think we’d be set.

I wouldn’t personally be against McStay leaving if it allowed us to achieve that, however I’m also mindful of ****ing off the players we already have by forcing guys out.

Tbh I think a lot of our trade period will come down to whether or not we have to pay up (in terms of picks/players) for Joe, or whether Essendon simply accept the pick.

Witherden is a limited athlete, but his weapon (kicking) is very good. Unfortunately for him though, he can play one role and one role only - Birchalls distribution role. If we did trade him I'd be okay with that, but would rather keep him as I can see him playing Birchalls role in 2021. He wasn't afforded the luxury of a run of games when low on confidence as Ah Chee and Rayner were, and think he needs a big off season and a run of games to find his best form.
Could Hinge play that role to a similar level?

If Essendon do match, I can see Noble certainly entertaining trading our two first round picks this year for Daniher.

At a stretch, I could even see Ely Smith included, if he expressed an interest in wanting more playing opportunities.

If we have been talking to Daniher behind the scenes, to convince him to come to Brisbane (and let’s face it, we have for it to get to this stage), then there is an obligation on our behalf to offer a reasonable trade package if Essendon match our contract offer, which was always a possibility.

Or he goes in to the National Draft with a nominated contract that the team who drafts him has to match.

Geelong might possibly draft him with their third first round pick (tied to their own finishing position), which should hopefully be before our earliest pick. Other than Geelong, I don’t believe another team would draft a player that has said he wants out of Victoria, unless they have discussions with Daniher prior to the draft, and he’s happy to go there (looking at GWS, if they trade in a late first round pick).

So we use the second of our first round picks to draft Daniher.

I'll appreciate your opinion, but I will say it again - the lions WILL NOT give up their first 2 draft picks for Daniher - you can quote me / bookmark it.
There is only one team taking a risk and that is us - not Essendon. He is a RFA and the Bombers will need to accept Band 2 (if that's the case). The best scenario for them might be to do a side deal with us after they receive pick 20 - ie Pick 20 & 41/61 for 18 and player (Witherden).
Also, we have no obligation to Essendon to come up with a suitable trade package - we come up with the contract that is suitable and if its Band 2 then so be it. If they match - we walk away. Why would we even bother offering picks 18 & 19 when deep down everyone in the footy world believes he is a huge risk.
Trust me when I say, that we have other plans for picks 18 & 19. Watch this space.

You've made my day Flea_29 , Love hearing this.

Btw, if you're making all this up & have no inside knowledge I will hate you forever.

Could Hinge play that role to a similar level?
I rate Witho above Hinge in that role. I think the club sees Hinge as more of a wingman anyway.

I rate Hinge higher, albeit off of a very limited sample. Wish Witho all the best, wherever that is - but for the Lions I fear it may be elsewhere. The Bombers would be a good fit for him, IMO.

Is he? He's one of the best tacklers
Averaged 3.8 tackles over 16 games vs 4.6 for Zorko (for comparison), so pretty good but none of his other measures are close to elite level so couldn't see him adding enough to what we already have. Not a clearance specialist and doesn't kick goals. And is 27 and under contract.

I'd swop Dan McStay for Dusty Martin, though Dusty is getting on a bit and I don't think Dan will want to move.

We don't have to do anything. We don't have to do anything. Imagine that a few years ago.

Present list got us to second two years in a row. Plenty of natural improvement to come. Hipwood will be All Australian next year if he plays the way he has in the last few weeks. Everyone could name their own improver for next year.

We can play hard to get.

Only problem will be if a player wants to go, we need to maximise the return.

I think it was 2018 when he won their B&F he was number 1 for tackles in the AFL

My feeling is that Dan McStay will shift down back if we get Daniher.
Doubt it but never say never in this world. Dan has done everything the coach's have asked of him this season & I am 100% confident he will receive glowing feedback for his efforts at the end of season review. Moving him out of the forward line based on what he has achieved this year would be surprising but not out of the question. Guess we will just have to wait & see how the cards fall.

I guess its good to read a post that has a slightly different theme to the norm from you. Still pumping up Lester's tyres every chance but slashing someone else's instead of McStays this time. NOICE!!!

Actually you are right, his career average for tackles is 5.1 which is elite. But his top stats are all 2018 or earlier so, like a lot of Bombers, has been in the doldrums for a couple of seasons.
