That'll be good for the melts.

Yep, because those that actually feel for a bloke that loved living in Brisbane and loved his teammates after the club made a commitment to him only a year ago for a further two years and feel bad for the guy after he's been pushed out of the club unceremoniously are derided for being disappointed or should I say having a 'melt'.

And we're the ones that have no heart.

Oh well, good luck Alex, he'll enjoy playing in front of full houses at one of the best clubs in the land than the fairweather bandwagoners that occasionally show up at the Gabba.

Oh, I understand that fully. It’s a straight out salary dump that the club felt had to be done ASAP.

Yup.

Its one that is going to look weird to fans of other clubs and probably over 50% of ours but I can't say I'm that upset. I've been pretty consistent that while I think Alex has strengths and I like him a lot as a person, I thought we were a better team with him not playing. This isn't a view based on the Daniels chase, its on the gap between his good games and his poor ones. If he played like he did in our 70 point ish win over essendon more regularly, he wouldn't be going anywhere - but thats not the case.

Worth remembering for those having a tantrum now that some of you spent all of last year criticising Alex and Cam for being arrogant, unfit and abused him for not catching Daniels.

Sometimes things don't work out between player and club and I sincerely think alex could become a good player for west coast in the style they play, but at the same time I can understand why the club doesn't view him as part of their future plans.

I’m not sure if he does walk in to their best 22.

He does. 100%.

Significantly better player than Jackson Nelson and Lewis Jetta who play the same role.

We simply have more depth in that area than West Coast.

Here is a sample of the 'heart' you displayed towards Alex at this time last year:

Witherden gave up; its there for all to see. How can you say otherwise?
So are you saying Witherden didn’t give up?
Not sure what that’s got to do with your assertion that Witherden would die for his mates when he gave up and allowed an opposition player to stroll in and kick the winning goal because he couldn’t be stuffed chasing him and just gave up.
How was Witherden 10 metres behind Daniels. It was the other way around; mate.

Any pressure by Witherden, perceived or otherwise may have been the difference between Danieis rushing his kick and missing, but he was in such space because Witherden quit that he was able to calmly slot the goal.

Yep, Fagan didn’t chose teams to win specific games, he played players purely to get games into them irrespective of the outcome.

You can’t tell me that the likes of Bastinac, Cutler, Lester and Walker wouldn’t have offered us more than the likes of Answerth, Bailey, Adams and McCarthy etc.

I’ve no doubt we’ll pull a Melbourne in 2020.
I’m not sure I’d say Witherden would die for his mates given he just gave up chasing his opponent who strolled into an open goal. I’m sorry but that isn’t dying for your mates.

That's business, we're not a charity. You have to separate the person from the footballer and unfortunately for him he isn't seen as best 22 moving forward. If he gets to play seniors at West Coast isn't that better for him than playing reserves with us?

We're not sure how he feels about it though are we Dylan

He's very young. Maybe the idea appeals to him. Who knows. I'm sure he'll have something to say when he turns up in their jumper.

Dylan12 does bring up a point that worries me: IMO we have too many players with enormous injury histories. Hope I am wrong but Adams, McCarthey, Daniher, Birchall and Cockatoo may play very few games for us. I think its a couple of these sorts of risks too many.

I'm trying to come up with a number of games that the above players will be fit for next year. Who want to give an estimate? Mine is 65 and I am an optimist.

Another point is if Cockatoo gets in the side McCarthey or Rayner may go!!!!!!!!!!
Disagree, especially for Rayner, it will most likely be Ellis-Yolmen/Coleman who makes way

Always thought he was a bit of a FIGJAM but still don't get this move from us as a team.

What we got for him is essentially worthless AND we are paying some of his salary. Would have expected if we are paying his salary we'd have at least managed a second round pick but apparently not

Because its not like Alex couldn't turn things around.

Given the club's stance now, any player that doesn't player more than half a season, may as well look elsewhere as they've got no hope of turning their fortunes around.

I’d be dropping both Witherden and his housemate. Both clearly drink their own bath water, don’t have the fitness or willingness to work hard enough and IMO, take their positions for granted.

Nothing wrong in bringing both back down to earth with a stint schlepping around the backwaters day of NEAFL grounds for a month or so.
He could be if Fagan just gave him an extended run without fear of ever being dropped like he does with some of his pets such as Rayner, Witherden, Hipwood etc despite regularly having poor game after poor game.

Or maybe the club has seen enough in Alex's time here to know that there are better options elsewhere and on a hell of a lot less money.

I love the picture that gets painted of Fagin and Noble standing over a poor defenceless Witho being kicked out of the club while he pleads to stay. It isn't like we kicked him out and told him to go to the Eagles, he is choosing to go there for more opportunity.

Will be soul destroying for the rest of our playing list to watch the club give up a player for nothing AND pay a heap of his contract to go play for another club so he can advance his career, which we can't offer him next season. Damn we are so horrible to our players.

We could have a Free Agent on our mind for 2021 OR it could be just to upgrade the likes of Bailey/Starcevich/McInerney/McCluggage/Payne who according to the roster watch are all OOC next year.

Extra points for Coleman + extra assets to move either up in this draft or into next years. Disappointed to lose him but it's not a bad result for all 3 parties involved in my opinion

Doesn't post at all during the finals series, including nothing about our win over Richmond.

Back with a bang the eve of trade deadline!

Genuinely sad to see Alex go. I remember his debut where he looked like a million bucks and thought he'd be a 200 gamer for us. Hopefully he can recapture some of that form and have a great career for the Eagles. No doubt he's mature enough to maintain a good relationship with the mates he's made at the club and this is the best option for all parties. Great clubs have to make tough decisions and this is certainly one of them. It'll be rough seeing him kick lace out to Yeo.

I wish him all the best

Think this discussion on twitter is pretty accurate to our situation:

How can it be a straight up salary dump when we are paying a significant proportion of his contract?

Not even including the COVID cap squeeze, list sizes etc.

There are many factors as to why Martin & Witherden have been moved on, ultimately we're also fortunate that neither are best 22. Even if Witho has the potential in the future to become best 22, his contract suggests that should be now, not in 2-3 years.
