So from the Hawks Round 1 2020 team, the following are 99.9% unlikely to line up in R1 this year:
- Sicily (inj) + Gunston (inj)
- Puopolo, Scully, Stratton, Frawley, Henderson (ret)
- Smith (FA)
- Patton (other)

- Mitchell also in doubt with his shoulder, but sounds like he'll be fine.

To fill those spots, over the season / off-season the following came / should come in a replacements:
- Scrimshaw
- Impey
- Hartigan
- Phillips
- Day
- Lewis

That leaves 3 spots to be filled, before you even start talking about competition from the 22 who finished the year. Greaves, Howe and Jiath are the two most likely to come in from the established playing group (though the second two don't excite me), but rookie-priced options include:
- Brockman (M/F) - strong candidate for the Puopolo small forward position
- Downie + Maginnes (M) - candidates for a wing / mid rotation spot
- DGB (D) - don't think we'll see him R1
- Jeka - smokey for a KF position, but is apparently developing really nicely.

Someone on the Hawks board noted that we haven't had a draftee debut round 1 under Clarkson since Rioli, though that's not super relevant here.

History says draftees for us rarely get a plug-and-play, usually getting a taste and then playing 2s until the next year (con)
However, Day last year stayed in once in, and our squad certainly isn't as strong as it used to be so the above system may not be a luxury we have (pro)

I like Downie and Maginess as they should both be familiar with the Hawthorn system
Don’t mind Greaves as a prospect. Shown he can score well! Risky as **** though but the hawks starting 22 will certainly be interesting this year

Couldn’t have been more impressed by Josh Daicos in Collingwood match sim today. Played as a pure mid, looks fitter again and can rise further on 2020 breakout.
Finlay Macrae is ready to play AFL R1.
Jeremy Howe & Brody Mihocek trained beforehand... Mason Cox ran laps

Which rookies are we confident to have on field ?

DEF: Jones ?
MID: Phillips ?
FWD: Macrae, Cockatoo

Can't think of too many beyond that.
The bloke from Hawthorn Downie, maybe someone like Bergman slim pickings thus far

Gould at D6 maybe. Could potentially have a half back/3rd tall/intercepting role and Swans do like to possess it in the back half.

Wehr if by chance he lands the vacant HB role at GWS.

Cheaper rooks do look sketchy though and the ones priced @ ~250k aren’t guaranteed to be a lot better scoring wise. For those last on field spots we’ll just be rolling with the eye test from the 1 pre season game and hoping.

Sydney's decision to take McDonald over West Australian key defender Denver Grainger-Barras at pick No.4, combined with the departure of Aliir Aliir to Port Adelaide during the Trade Period, now leaves the Swans with some tinkering to do in their backline.

Campbell has been earmarked to begin his career at half-back, potentially replacing the midfield-bound Callum Mills, while 191cm defender Will Gould has been tipped to make his senior debut this season playing as an intercepting third tall.

The best rookies im reading about and predicting in best 22s or very close to it

Defenders:
Denver Grainger Barass
L.Jones
A.Pearce
J.Hamling
P.Ambrose
F.McAsey

Mids:
W.Phillips
Cockatoo

Fwds:
Cockatoo
F.Macrae
W.Kelly (Pies) - Plenty on the pies board have him best 22 however i feel Mihocke, M.Cox and D.Cameron all ahead but maybe they go smaller

It looks extremely slim pickings. I can even see many of these guys missing best 22. The only one im confident on is Will Phillips (The Roos just have to play him)

W.Gould - I couldnt fit him into the swans best 22 but recent reports sound good and a move of Mills into the middle might aid his debut in round 1
Bergman - Sounds very close but probably needs an injury in the front half to a small to find a spot. Is probably an EMG in best 22 it seems
J.Wehr - Mature aged, i think he could play round 1 but heard nothing about him. GWS look weak down back. If Whitfield isnt ready round 1 it helps his cause
C.Idun - Spots open similar to Wehr, if Whitfield isnt ready round 1 it helps his cause
T.Highmore - mature aged, Geary injury might help him but still saints have plenty of depth. He will be close and is impressing.

Im not seeing much else
I currently have J.Rantall and T.Bianco on my mids bench and i dont see them in the best 22 or close to it really.

not certain if paywall or not can post text if need be
Most years we're saved by a healthy enough dose of debutants round 1.
All the talk of it being slim pickings this year (due to little to no games last year and even next to no group training) makes for sad reading.
It certainly makes sense for clubs to run these players through the reserves for a while.

Need just enough awesome $170k'ers to build my side. Lord knows, it's mid priced enough to get onfield rookies down to 4.

I will make a prediction now and say 2 of the three recent Melbourne draftees will debut in round 1, based off of training reports:

Bailey Laurie (FWD/DEF status, will play high half forward)
Fraser Rosman (MID/FWD status, training as a wingman)
Jake Bowey (FWD/MID status, apparently will play a Caleb Daniel-esque role off half back)

Do me a likely round 1 Melbourne team? Hard to know if B.Brown will be fit ect (Weidemann out)

These guys will be close i shouldve spoken about the top 2, dees depth doesnt seem that great so these guys are a decent chance

Defenders: May, Lever, Tomlinson, Hibberd, Salem, T.Rivers, Hunt/Lockhart (7)
Mids: Gawn, Oliver, Petracca, Viney, Harmes, Brayshaw, Langdon (7)
Fwds: B,Brown, L.Jackson, T.Macdonald, K.Pickett, Fritsch, Melksham (6)

I think thats a guarateed 20 players for round 1

Then it depends on those rookies being selected over guys like N.Jones, VandenBerg, Neale Bullen, Spargo

So ill bring Laurie into my side now

From my reading of the draft profiles Laurie sounds like a capable scorer aswell. Half fwd never the easiest position to play unless in a strong side and its hard to predict the dees ladder position. I think there best is 6th but likely just outside 8.

Still think he can do 55-60 as a high half fwd

Hey, great write up.

I'll add/subtract a few!!
Powell looks the most likely @ NM to get a mid role, Phillips may start on HFF but both may play at least
McInnes a possibility at the pies
Fullarton looks like the most likely ruck rook to get games
Ruscoe is being talked up at the Pies. Small fwd but might be an option

The biggest issue as I see it currently is mid rookies!!
If you take a 50/50 or better view of them starting round 1, this is about all of them, not many great scorers and not many cheap ones!!

Phillips, Powell, Cockatoo, MaCrae and McInnes

And that issue gets magnified when so many of the mid pricers you might want are fwd's of defenders!!!
My team was set up to have 3 mid rooks on field but really struggling to find 5 mid rooks, especially if they are going to cost me over $1m for them total!!

It's way too early to be panicking about rookies

Every year the pickings look slim in the off-season, then tons are named by round 1

Phillips will get lots of games this year, but is unlikely for round 1. He hasn't played for a year and has only ever played as a mid. Would make more sense to start him in the twos in a familiar role and make him force his way in when ready.

Almost all of the rookies coming into this year hardly played a competitive match of footy last year. Highly unlikely we get rookies like we have done in the past
