Why are our younger players not due back until January given that other finalists like Port are back in training?
I think they are, just not at the Club, officially.
They would be running their off-season programs.

The Players aren't just sitting around playing X-Box all day while they wait to return to training - most are already putting in the effort to ensure come day one of 'official' training they're training at a high standard.

Sydney landed Nike, GWS are about to land Puma and we're stuck with classic. Is it strange that GWS (A much smaller club than ours) are able to land better sponsors?
I’m all for a club bashing pile on, but for goodness sake..

When St Kilda were emerging as the hottest new team in the early-mid 2000s they had Piping Hot.

Geelong went with Cotton:On when they were at their peak.

Roger Federer switched from Nike to Uni Qlo.

It’s not all about the quality / name of the gear. There are other factors in play.

I wasn't for one moment suggesting they were...I am just curious as to why our boys are not back into official training when the December start date was promulgated by the AFL and the other preliminary finalist is back into it. I am sure there is good reason but it does seem a bit left field.

No doubt comes down to work/life balance and the plans put in place by our conditioning staff.

As one whom has negotiated these high level sponsorships, we as marketers look at this way more than having a badge on a jersey. we look at how the club can help sales, improve market save, enter new markets, get access to their membership base. We look at the return on investment for the $ handed over.

Quick example, remember Primus when the sponsored Collingwood. Primus was a new telecommunications company that had trouble getting their brand recognised because Australian's though Primus was a brand of gas stove. So their marketing team looks around for a vechile, at the time, that would get national TV exposure and help promote their products and services Australia wide given they we also selling Australian Wide. The also sponsored the Bathust 1000.

Now the Lions kinda got themselves in a pickle, no one saw Covid coming, no one knew Queensland would be a 'Bubble' and constantly get national TV exposure for a full year. Think of all those AFL supporters sitting in a cold, isolated winter down south and seeing their team training and playing with zinc cream on their noses. What also happened is the the biggest sporting franchise in Qld the Broncos imploded and won their first wooden spoon and the rating on AFL on TV for the first time out-rated NRL and a couple of Lions games out-rated the NRL by 38%.

So when you think of sponsors don't think of the size of the company think only of how much $ the Lions get. Primus only existed a few years then disappeared despite their multi-million spend. The Lions will get the most $ from a company wanting to enter the Queensland market, or a Queensland company wanting to enter other state markets around Australia. If we knew what we knew now after Covid we would have had very different contracts in place. Our membership base is still around 30,000 against clubs like Richmond on supposedly 100,000. In marketing term we call that eyeballs. You can have your products advertised in an email newsletter with the Tigers and you reach 3 times the number of consumers directly.

XL Express is a Queensland Company, so is Youi, Coffee Club and XXXX is a Qld Beer.

Neds is a market challenger triyingto get recognition among gamblers that follow sport

Just because they might not sound huge names in the corporate world it doesn't mean they are not paying big $.

But hell it could have been bigger if we had known a pandemic was coming and Queensland would become the centre of the sporting world.

Drove past Arden St yesterday and the Kangas were hard at it.

Tigers have had the latest start of all teams the last few years and it hasn't done them any harm. I wouldn't be concerned that we are late to the party.

I think the bulk of our list are probably fit enough. We didn't rest too many during the short turnarounds. Having a more tailored program leading into Christmas is probably a good way to allow the interstate players some time at home and to mentally unwind after a stressful season.

Because the CBA says they can't be back in training now. If port are back in training, that is in breach of the CBA.
Not true for 1-4 year players who can be back for a 2 week block prior to full return in Jan.

Players can also choose to return early and a lot do every year.

I stand corrected then - I was reasonably sure we couldn't have anyone back until Jan.

In any case as others have said I'm sure a lot of players are doing a fair bit of conditioning and off-season work, we've seen that the last few years.

Boys out training at Coorparoo this morning.

The Bez boys, Rayner, Lyons, Oscar, Fullarton, Matho, McStay, Hippy and Ballenden. Zorko turned up a bit later but just doing a bit of re-hab work.

A few coaches around as well.
Adcock, Hodgey, Henriksen and Borlace.

A couple that are really impressing me with their running is Tom Fullarton and Tom Berry. Running really strong and pushing Jarrod all the way but Jarrod is doing what Jarrod does, Cam Rayner is running the best I have ever seen him and looking very fit in general, still towards the back of the pack with Jarryd Lyons but not that far behind.

Dan McStay looks to have leaned up a bit at the moment and could be set for a bit more running this year a bit higher up the ground maybe, with Daniher coming in. He was the next in line with the running after the Bez boys and Fullas. And running really strongly as they all were.

In the skills department when they were doing some full field drills, Tom Fullarton impressed again with the only player who didn’t miss a kick. Tom Berry still has some work to do.

Oscar is so strong in marking contests and such a competitive beast, rarely beaten but when he does get beaten, chastises himself every time. Fullarton still looks a little undersized but is still quite strong.

Would love Hodgey to take on a more permanent role, he was such a good acquisition. Never shuts up and is just always at them pointing out rights and wrongs, he is just a really good teacher.

Anyway gotta go and do some work now.

The best report since I was reported for pushing you down the stairs for being an Essendon uncle.

I read the article as being pretty positive about the development of Joyce and Prior, less so the Smiths and particularly Ely. But they did always say he was starting from further back.

Yep, Exactly how I read it. Those hoping smith will come on may be disappointed. He was a stretch and project type player when we got him. Starting to feel like a bust.
