See these guys regularly at the park walking the dog. My missus comments every Tom’s, pays to be a footballer. I usually respond with uh? What are you talking about babe?

Yep, Exactly how I read it. Those hoping smith will come on may be disappointed. He was a stretch and project type player when we got him. Starting to feel like a bust.

Seeing as us general public types never got to watch the reserves this past season, I’d prefer to wait and watch the players this coming preseason, after New Years, before commenting on any players development or lack there of.

Next year will be really interesting for Ely. If the named emergencies is anything to go by, he is even further off given he's not once been named an emergency in his time at the Lions. I watched every NEAFL game in 2019 (obviously didn't see a thing in 2020 except for the pre season game he played in the seniors) and he looks a really long way off, so I agree with you Scubaveg.

Corey Lyons was an emergency a couple of times as well, so clearly at that stage Smith was behind Lyons.

Might be a bit controversial, but wonder if the club was doing its best to get Corey a senior game before delisting him. At least naming him an emergency might have also helped his chances with getting picked up by another club, so if that was the intent then good on the club for doing that. Although would think after 4 years could have got one AFL game in 2017 or 2018. So I am not sure if Ely is/was behind Lyons.
Skinner was named emergency many times in 2020, had a bit of press at the beginning of this year, similar to Keays the year before and both were delisted. Also from memory the club played some senior guys like Walker, Cuttler, Keays, Bastinac etc in the 2019 NEAFL GF (rested some of our young players), arguably in an effort to give them a chance to get picked up (although probably already had a club), and or a send off game.

No chance a club names a player as an emergency for that reason. Almost makes as much sense as gifting players a game for “development” over players who have earned their spot.

Boys out training at Coorparoo this morning.

The Bez boys, Rayner, Lyons, Oscar, Fullarton, Matho, McStay, Hippy and Ballenden. Zorko turned up a bit later but just doing a bit of re-hab work.

A few coaches around as well.
Adcock, Hodgey, Henriksen and Borlace.

A couple that are really impressing me with their running is Tom Fullarton and Tom Berry. Running really strong and pushing Jarrod all the way but Jarrod is doing what Jarrod does, Cam Rayner is running the best I have ever seen him and looking very fit in general, still towards the back of the pack with Jarryd Lyons but not that far behind.

Dan McStay looks to have leaned up a bit at the moment and could be set for a bit more running this year a bit higher up the ground maybe, with Daniher coming in. He was the next in line with the running after the Bez boys and Fullas. And running really strongly as they all were.

In the skills department when they were doing some full field drills, Tom Fullarton impressed again with the only player who didn’t miss a kick. Tom Berry still has some work to do.

Oscar is so strong in marking contests and such a competitive beast, rarely beaten but when he does get beaten, chastises himself every time. Fullarton still looks a little undersized but is still quite strong.

Would love Hodgey to take on a more permanent role, he was such a good acquisition. Never shuts up and is just always at them pointing out rights and wrongs, he is just a really good teacher.

Anyway gotta go and do some work now.
Thanks Lions, for us up in the country these are great reports.

I though there were a couple of games late 2019 I think he was the captain in at least 1 when he started to lift but your summary otherwise is right on. And he was dropped for the Grand final but so was Tom Berry.

Hodgey will one day make an outstanding coach. He is a smart guy - make money now doing media and assistant at lions while he has a young family. Would be nice if he lives up in Qld permanently and then in time takes over from Fages whenever that is :)

All the younger players were dropped for the NEAFL final, due to the rules about only allowed field x number of listed players against a non AFL team. The club explained why at the time.

yes due to the NEAFL rules, club could not play more than I think 16 AFL listed players and had to play the GF at the home ground of the team that ran second not the team that was undefeated all year. Due to this a couple of academy or top up players played, whilst about 7 or 8 on our actual list missed out.
It was an interesting decision by the club, at the time to play older players who were being delisted or who had already been linked to other clubs (eg Cutler), instead of the younger guys. I think the club was attempting to give them every opportunity to find new clubs and or a 'send off' game.

Yep I know the rules, they had to drop some players, it was whom they dropped that was the most interesting.

He had played AFL from a very young age along with being a member of the academy and part of an U15 All Australian side.

Very talented across multiple sports.
No doubt he is talented, but a professional basketball environment is a far cry from the aerobic demands of AFL.

Looks and sounds excited to be a Lion.

‘I’m pretty versatile, don’t have to play in the one position.’

It’s crystal clear what you need to be a top 22 lion, so developing players know what they need to do.
