Autopsy 2021 Swans Vs Giants Elimination Final. Lost by 1 point

The Freo away game is the one where it really HURT us. We were all over them in the first half, but the disappearing act in the 3rd quarter KILLED US. Couldnt get it out of our backline. Took Buddy magic to get us back into it. That would have got us top 4 alone. Then it would have been free money against the Dees. Arguably positioned for a 2003 QF like game.

Now that the season is over, I can talk about the woulda, shoulda

I don't rate Bell but we can go over shoulda coulda wouldas in terms of moments where players got things wrong in that game, including some of our much more fancied players who fumbled their lines.

Parker and Hewett did their usual. Cannot fault their effort. Did not think this was Hewett's best game and lacked his usual composure, though the moment where he spun out of a tackle with his shorts around his arse and still found a target was an exemplary moment of class. Parker's marking was a highlight in a game where we seemed to just have butter on our fingers.

Of the young brigade I thought McCartin and Rowbottom were not only very good but led by example in moments. Especially McCartin, who had at one point had me saying, "Alexa, play I Am a Rock by Simon and Garfunkel."

Buddy had a quality game. Always good for a miss a game, shouldn't be hung for that miss happening in a crucial moment on this occasion. It's like hanging Heeney for his miss earlier in the game despite him getting us back into it.

Papley was BOG for me. Just set the tone with his intensity and the standard with his skill. Felt like a bit of a coming of age moment for him on the back of an All Australian blazer.

Some of those guys in that age bracket where they should be asserting themselves - Melican, Florent, Hayward - need to take a good look at themselves over the summer. Good players, but the disparity between their best and worst is just glaring.

Finally, I felt underwhelmed that despite the younger guys being talked up as the ones who would step up in this game, Horse never really gave them that chance. I still did not get my Rowbottom-Warner double at a centre bounce, and both were virtually kept out of centre bounces the entire second half. Felt like we needed to try and make the absence of JPK & Mills something of a blessing for us. But instead we just kinda ran with the same olds and I felt it was an opportunity kinda squandered.

Unbelievably proud of this group, and the whole club. No shame in losing a final by 1 point when we were doing a lot right, and did a lot right for the whole season. Great launching pad for something bigger next year.

PS. Lucky no one got ahead of themselves and said we'd win the flag this year ;)

Papley BOG? He had a great first quarter then barely sighted. Im not gonna fault his misses as much as others but also had 2 or 3 shots at goal that didnt score at all.

He led the charge early but wasnt involved throughout

Why do we bring in Warner as a half forward, when hes a mid. It was like in his first year, where he had no impact because thats not his role! Why don't the coaches understand how good Warner was earlier in the season as a MIDFIELDER.

Honestly, regardless of how bad a player was, it was the coaches' fault for putting them in the position in the first place

Tried to play him in 2 positions because of no Kennedy and Mills perhaps.

I felt like it was the sort of game where no one really played a complete game but more ebbs and flows on the back of individuals.

Papley got us competitive early on, Buddy kept us in it in the 2nd, Parker and Rowbottom said jump on in the 3rd, and Heeney lifted majorly late. But when the whips were cracking early and the game was relatively even it was Papley who broke things open for us when no one else could. Tbh could give the nod to a handful of different players.

Would have been nice if one of Papleys snaps made the distance…really, it’s hard to see how we managed to lose. So many chances. There will be a bit of growth that will come out of that game. Now off to trade and draft and delistings….ahh how long until next season starts?

Two things killed us more than anything else:

1. The diabolical f50 entries
2. The 5 goal run by GWS

Blaming the likes of Bell and Hickey for missing set shots is a cop out IMO.
hence the pile on Melican as he got killed by Hogan 1 on 1 when it was slipping away in the 2nd quarter. 2nd quarter or 4th quarter, it all adds up.
