1. He left Port where he was an assistant, during the 2004 finals, to get ready for the 2004 draft. I believe this is the first time in history that an assistant has left a premiership winning team during the finals to take up another post. Unheard of before and I think since.

2. He did so to attack the 2004 draft, where he got Roughhead, Franklin and Lewis.

3. But he also retained the gems from earlier drafts- Hodge, Mitchell, Brown (2001), Sewell (2002).

4. He does not trade out good players under 30 yo, let alone under 23.

5. His preferred forward set up was Roughhead Franklin Rioli

If Clarkson goes to GC, history may repeat, especially given how strong next year’s draft is supposed to be.

1. He will be in place well before the draft

2. He already has a strong hand for 2022- one first round pick (likely 1-4); 3 second round picks (likely high); 2 third round picks; 2 fourth round picks

3. He will do everything he can to retain King, Lukosius and Rankine.

4. He does not trade players like King, Lukosius and Rankine

5. King Lukosius Rankine has a Roughhead Franklin Rioli feel about it

The only way you would get Lukosius from Clarkson is from his cold dead hand.

Maybe that's another reason we are targeting him this year.

Port should be making a play at Harry Edwards from west coast in any SPP trade, he looked real good this year and at 200cm be a great addition, big strong lad who can take a mark too. He prob wont want to leave WA and West coasts would prob say no way but he is the 1 who improves us in the future

Man freo could make out really well this off season.

I reckon they got slight unders on Cerra but still have a very good pick from it and with their other moves have great draft picks.

I’m not sure what they’ll get for lobb but getting something for a 29yr old that won’t be a part of their promising next gen is a good outcome for them imo. Can be a piece to help them build for the future.

Lukosious isn’t worth anything close to Dixon and 2 first rounders, even with a second coming back.

1. Dean Bailey did exactly the same thing in 2007 during Port's finals when appointed coach of Melbourne on 31st August. Quote from Choco's press conference -

" I’m not sure if I’m here to announce that Dean is the new Melbourne coach, but he is. It’s a great appointment by them and he’s very worthy of the job. We’re very happy for him, but obviously that means he doesn’t coach with us anymore. "

It was a fairly common occurrence for assistant coaches to be tapped up and taken from finals participants (Dean Bailey left for Melbourne on the eve of the 2007 finals series, another example off the top of my head) until the AFL ruled that you couldn’t leave to take up a new role until your team was knocked out a few years ago.

I can’t remember what incident brought that to a head.
