AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
You make some good points BB maybe your last paragraph is close that could be where the club sees his role for the short term future, i hope not for me there’s untapped talent there that hasn’t fully had the chance to show us what he’s capable of as a rotating midfielder by the lack of game time he’s been offered, there’s most likely in-house reasons behind that we are all not privy too...Was going to post something similar a couple of days ago and got distracted.
I think some players thrive on being given a niche role. You see it at Richmond and Hawthorn especially, those guys who have a very specific job to do which is designed to supplement the more creative types. They're usually less talented, but are hard-working and hard-nosed.
Cunners is a weird one in that he's incredibly talented, but quite unassuming about it. If you ask him to be peripheral then he's waaaay peripheral. But if you can break through to him and get him in a role where he's the man, then there's potential for him to win games off his own boot.
Mulled it over the last few days and I think the role I'd create for him would be as a forward 50 stoppage specialist. Centre bounces, on the wing, down back - that's where your Cripps/Setters/Walsh/Curnow/Dow(?) combinations do their work. Once the ball is inside 50, I'd have Cunners as the key player to be at the fall of the ball. No lurking round the outside waiting to see what happens - stoppage inside 50, get in there Cunners and work your magic. He's got the skillset, but he doesn't need to be "on" mentally for the same percentage of a game that the premium mids do. And it means when we're creating forward 50 stoppages, guys like Cripps and Setters and Walsh can have a brief spell on the outside or loitering closer to the 50m arc to help defend.
While that's happening, Cunners is developing confidence, consistency and stoppage craft. And maybe after a few years he could transition to more midfield time if suitable.
Having a mentor that offers his time with advice support and friendship is priceless for some of young fellas to help guide them particularly through their early years of what AFL personally requires and demands of them...I know Murph taking a junior player under his wing will trigger a few posters that he's not the right role model. But while I won't argue over him avoiding contact in matches, he is another type of tough.
He's the guy that is still running in Q4, when almost every other player is stuffed. (When fit), he's won us games with late gut running, link play and I50s when others can't keep up. That kind of endurance doesn't come easily and takes a certain type of toughness.
And by all accounts Stocker doesn't need lessons on bash and crash toughness, but more 'hitting the wall' toughness. And I have no problem with Muprh (or Ed, Walsh, Gibbo etc) taking Stocker under his wing on that front.
You dig it most Ferris!

I watched the 2001 Adelaide Vs Carlton Final last week. Kouta killed them. He was just too big. Simple as that. That’s Crippa’s one wood. He’s too big. Russell said in the recent Buckley podcast “make your strengths better” rather than work solely on your weaknesses. Why he has slimmed down Cripps then is beyond me. I’d love to see him back being just too big and strong for everyone as soon as they can load him up post surgery. I’ve watched him in pre season runs. He’s not an amazing endurance runner but he’s more than fit enough.why the best inside mid in the league needs to lose weight every year to no longer be an inside mid is something i'll never really understand.
if they want to preserve him then send him forward for 30% of his game.
he's not a running machine no matter how much fat he drops, he's an inside mid. i think they're trying to be too clever with him.
T Shaw (Pies) once said “Craig Bradley is the toughest player I played against. He kept running when he had absolutely nothing left to give.”Totally agree with your comment re toughness. Brings to mind a comment Dermot Brereton made about Craig Bradley.
He said there were different types of courage and to do the hard training and gut running that Craig Bradley did took exceptional courage.
I thought at the time it was one of the more insightful and unexpected statements from a player who was inspirational for a different type of courage.
Setters has played 36 games. I'll say that again, ONLY 36 GAMES. Once you take into account his ACL injury in 2018, it only makes this kid more impressive.Out of a possible rating of 10 where do we see setters on potential and on 2020 form as an inside mid?
Agree he needs more time and that he will get better.Setters has played 36 games. I'll say that again, ONLY 36 GAMES. Once you take into account his ACL injury in 2018, it only makes this kid more impressive.
He will not be a 7.5/10 rating player, he will be 10/10.
I know the comparisons in style of play have been made to death, but I can absolutely see Setters being our Pendlebury. Smooth moving, versatile player.Setters has played 36 games. I'll say that again, ONLY 36 GAMES. Once you take into account his ACL injury in 2018, it only makes this kid more impressive.
He will not be a 7.5/10 rating player, he will be 10/10.
He got that off me.Totally agree with your comment re toughness. Brings to mind a comment Dermot Brereton made about Craig Bradley.

Pretty simple re Cripps.
He stays big and continues to be the biggest bash and crash player in the game and he’s finished at 29/30yo.
Take off a bit of size and spend a little less time in the heat of the kitchen and you stay in the game for an extra 3 years.
At a million dollars a year ... what would you do ...
+ Williams into the CentrePick 5 too, what a steal, thanks SOS.
Can certainly see Setterfield being elite when he gets to 100 games, AA too.
Been building quite nicely this year.
The problem with Cripps is, he's at his absolute A-game when he's right in the middle of the trenches, fighting toe to toe.
He'd best start earning that million smackeroons then, was poor this year. (Injuries certainly played a part)
He can push forward and does mark nicely but his kicking his horrible, so it creates quite the conundrum about what to do with Cripps.
He may be sick of it and would like to push forward and run more, hence the weight loss, but still got pushed around way too much this year, not quite sure what Cripps and CFC are going for, but time will tell.
Hopefully Cripps gets that long overdue assistance ASAP.
If he could work on his goal kicking over the pre-season it would be a huge plus too. Would love for someone like JSOS, Kennedy or even Kemp be that 3rd tall up front and then rotate through the guts to let Cripps rest forward.+ Williams into the Centre
+ Further-developed Walsh
+ Further-developed Setterfield
+ Any one of Stocker, Dow, Kemp, Philp to even slightly step-up in the midfield rotations
= Assistance for Cripps
I reckon if an afl player gets emotional about a nickname from teammates he might be playing the wrong game !?Names can be hurtful.

Not another slow start...please! If we are 2 and 4 or worse, we will be fending off some serious criticism.Let's see where we're at after the opening 6 rounds. If we're fair dinkum 50% or more is where we should be.
Guess what?do you ever work?
