Maybe the penny has dropped, and he's come out the end of a difficult few adaptive years?

I think this is a touch unfair on Stocker, talking about the 'penny dropping'. He is a kid.

First pre-season is the first pre-season, some are ready but most are not for AFL action. By all reports, he got stuck into his work well and made good impressions around the club. Stocker has significant ability and attributes, but his running power and endurance was not one of them. It wasn't a secret. Last year was COVID and I'm not sure we even really know what mental health issues were apparent, but it was a write off for him. This is his first 'real go' at it and it's not surprising to some of us that he is applying himself well and making strides.

He turned 21 two weeks ago. Has heaps of time and upside for days as a young player.

Comes to round 1, we've got Cripps, Ed, Walsh, Setters, Williams and Newnes in the 1s.

We have a VFL midfield that consists of Stocker, Dow, Cuningham, Kennedy, O'Brien and Philp.

That's a ****ing exciting 2nd string midfield. Hopefully they can begin to dominate the VFL and push their way into the 22.

Stocker not being a kid is essentially the point, and I didn't mean the 'penny dropping' pejoratively.

His first two pre-seasons he was well behind in the fitness stakes to the point he was being hidden in a forward pocket in match sim in his second pre-season. It looks like he's now permanently training with the midfield group, and at worst has hit a baseline fitness standard which is going to enable him to compete around the ground for longer.

Whether he's altered his diet, or being away from the squad last year actually allowed him some space to get fit and do his own thing during a pretty difficult period we don't know, but something has clearly changed in his body shape which was a major area for improvement in his first couple of seasons.

Cunners needs to replace Newnes

Not all had him written off.;)
The kid has it in spades.

Anyone else finding this pic of Cripps interesting.
To me it looks like Russell has honed his craft with PC. He no longer looks muscle bound like 2019, where I think everyone agrees his strength was fantastic, but it affected his mobility. Then in 2020 he lost weight to increase his mobility but that affected his strength- which is his one wood.
Now, and i know it is only one pic, but he looks a perfect blend of strength and mobility. There is a "lightness" to his physique, but also a real look of strength in a lean wiry way. I am looking for a huge year from Patrick, and for the first time, I think he will have enough A Grade cattle around him to really take advantage of his amazing clearance abilities.

Someone will correct me if I’m wrong....

WHY ISNT HE PART OF OUR STARTING MIDFIELD????
Goodnight till rd 1

Inside Mids / Outside Mids.

I believe they are making the distinction between the two. That’s not our starting midfield, that’s a summary of how our inside midfielders are tracking.

I think your boy will be captured in the outside midfielders / wingers group.

Can he do it consistently?

Only one way to find out...

Also Kennedy needs to replace Curnow
Not this year! Do not doubt a Curnow's will or endurance. Like, evva!
( occasional lapse of judgement from junior...maybe. ) :p

Enough speed amongst them?

They won't all feature at the same time, but as pure inside mids, I think it's fine, especially with the likes of Williams and Martin

The added bonus is the foot skills of Stocker, Williams, Martin and we know Kennedy is also accurate

Not saying it is necessarily the case, but I do wonder if there's some design at who the senior players nominate as the most impressive on the track?

No point mentioning Cripps or Weitering because we know what they're capable of and what their business as usual looks like, however guys like Dow, LOB and Stocker would benefit from that little boost. Last pre-season quite a few nominated Setterfield, who went up another level in 2020.

Yeah i dont take much, if anything from quotes like those - plus we've all seen great pre-seaspn trainers do sfa during the season come game time
