Australia’s favourite sport is AFL, new YouGov poll reveals​

There’s no doubt Aussies love their sport. But out of cricket, footy and tennis, a new survey has revealed which one has come out on top.

Australian Rules, rules.
The nation’s glorious homegrown football code has trumped all other sports in a new survey in which Aussies were asked to pick their favourite game.

In the exclusive survey for News Corp, YouGov asked 2297 Australians to pick their number one favourite sport from a list that included four codes of football, netball, tennis, cricket and surfing.

Aussie Rules was the runaway winner, with 23 per cent of the national vote.

It was also the dominant sport in most states, selected by 41 per cent of respondents in Victoria and Western Australia, 38 per cent in South Australia and 35 per cent in Tasmania.

In Queensland, Australian Rules was second only to rugby league, while in NSW it finished fourth, after league, tennis and cricket.

Rugby league was the nation’s second-most popular sport overall, with 13 per cent of the vote, while tennis received 11 per cent, cricket got 10 per cent and football (soccer) managed 8 per cent.

Sydney University sports expert Dr Steve Georgakis said the dominance of Australian Rules football was not surprising, partly because of work the AFL had done behind the scenes over many years.

“The AFL embarked upon a program of becoming the national game in the early ’80s,” he said.

“The way they’ve done that is that they’ve diversified. They’ve got the AFLW, they’ve got diversity programs, they’ve engaged with indigenous communities, and they’ve cleverly made inroads into the rugby states – and they’ve primarily done that at the grassroots level.”

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said there was “no doubt” AFL’s success was based on that grassroots activity.

“The support we enjoy is a direct result of the passion and commitment of the thousands of hard-working volunteers at Auskick clinics and community clubs across Australia who continue to inspire kids and ensure our game is accessible, inclusive and fun for all,” he said.

The number of girls and women participating in the game had doubled from 300,000 to 600,000 in the past six years, and the code was also enjoying strong growth in Queensland and NSW, Mr McLachlan said.

Cricket’s position at number four on the list was a surprise, Dr Georgakis said, but soccer’s position further down the list was not a shock. While it is indisputably “the world game,” it has never become the most popular sport in former British colonies, he said.

While the results of the YouGov survey revealed a nation in love with sport, it also showed the feeling wasn’t quite ubiquitous.

Twenty-eight per cent of respondents said they liked none of the listed sports – suggesting all those people are either massive golf tragics, or the national sporting obsession bores them witless.

Among women, the proportion who didn’t care about sport was even higher – 35 per cent.

And some states that pride themselves on their sport fanaticism may be in for a shock. Thirty-five per cent of Queenslanders expressed zero interest in any of the nominated sports, and in Victoria that figure was 29 per cent.

Recent figures from Ausplay show 8.5 million Australian adults and 3.4 million kids play some form of sport, and an astonishing 2.9 million of us volunteer to help stage community sport.

That makes me feel good and probably a lot of other people but the survey is immediately flawed.

!. It's first-past the post voting. If you had preferences then Netball would figure prominently.
Netball = 0 in Victoria is a total joke.
2. It includes surfing. Surfing is primarily a recreation and there a lots of other popular recreations.
3. The wording of the question "favourite sport" seems to be skewd away from participation.

A very interesting item in the report above- 35% of Women not interested in Sport, I thought it would be higher, still 35% is a challenge to AFLW to make inroads into that figure. Speaking of our family group of 8- excluding my wife- none of the Women/Girls have any in any sport at all. Family, Fashion and Social Media and their jobs rule the day.

AFLW numbers seem to be pretty weak this year after starting off strong. Last round in particular have been seemingly poor numbers on Fox. Are you doing any year to year comparisons The_Wookie ?

AFLW numbers seem to be pretty weak this year after starting off strong. Last round in particular have been seemingly poor numbers on Fox. Are you doing any year to year comparisons The_Wookie ?

At a glance id say yes, the ratings are weaker than we are accustomed to. Seven showing games in the mid afternoon rather than at night is an odd choice and I no longer have access to some of the data ive had previously which is annoying. On top of that Mediaweek seems to be slacking off a little now.

Its hard to do any kind of comparisons with the low amount of data being received. Problem is that Tests, BBL and the Australian Open smash everything at this time of the year, and knock any low rating stuff off the charts.

We're kind of limited to the end of season summary if we are lucky.

ARL Commission boss Peter V’landys has taken a swipe at AFLW, saying he’s “not surprised” the NRLW TV ratings dwarfed its rivals.

Women’s rugby league had a super impressive start last weekend in TV ratings.
The NRLW triple header in Newcastle flogged the AFLW in the combined Fox Sports and free-to-air figures, easily doubling their audience.

The three NRLW games had an average audience of 168,000 on Fox Sports and Channel 9 compared to the AFLW with an average of 70,000 on Fox Sports and 7 mate.

Independent commission says this is an encouraging sign for rugby league.

“I’m not surprised by the figures at all,” V’landys said. “Women’s rugby league is so much more entertaining. I’m not having a crack at the AFLW players because it’s the same with the men. Our game is better than theirs in all forms. Victorians will disagree with me but look at the TV figures.”

The NRL is now preparing to increase the number of teams from six to eight.

“I’ve always been a big supporter of the women’s rugby league,” V’landys said.

“In fact I’ve often questioned why we’ve been so slow in the past.

“This is a huge growth opportunity from grassroots to NRLW.

“The clubs are now really engaging in it and are applying to have a team, rather than having to be asked.”

The three NRLW games had an average audience of 168,000 on Fox Sports and Channel 9 compared to the AFLW with an average of 70,000 on Fox Sports and 7 mate.

This is a ridiculous comparison for multiple reasons:

• Round 1 of the NRLW is naturally going to have a spike in interest compared to the AFLW Round 8
• Of the 3 AFLW games only one was shown on national FTA (Pies v Dogs)
• AFLW has 7 games per round, with many of the biggest match ups being scheduled on Saturday nights

A better comparison would be Round 1 of the AFLW, where the season opener had main channel coverage on Seven.
