Comical.

  • NRL claims it wans $12 million a year because Tasmania are paying AFL $12 million a year
  • NRL does not mention that the Tasmanian government is paying that amount due to clear tourism factors for travelling away fans and for social benefits of the main sport in the state.
  • NRL are just trying to claim that "it's for the grassroots and not the main team" (they also fail to mention that it's effectively the same thing, should the NRL desire to build up a grassroots infrastructure in WA as they likely would to develop talent and a fanbase for the new team, it's money they'd have to take away from the revenue generation of ticket sales of the team anyway, money going around in a circle)
  • WA rightly saying "we just can't just spend millions per year on a thing that the public doesn't really care about, because you ask us to" (and I wish other government bodies had that too).
  • WA still saying they'll put money into a training base and stadium base as obviously that directly contributes back to the quality of team and tourism that would generate revenue for the state for the investment into the team.

Quid pro quo - does that mean AFL deserves $600 million.

The W.A. govenment built Perth Oval for the Force and the Glory with the Reds, NRL, FIFA, RA and concerts playing there.
So it's ready to re-use again.

The A-league doing a good expansion team for once.

It's amazing what happens when you create a team with a fanbase starved of top-level soccer.

They've really done well and Auckland have been put together very well, starting with a good coach. Long season I know, but a great start.

Round 1 last season was the "stadium round" immediately after the WWC and would be ridiculous to use as a comparison.

the buzz lasted the first round and returned to slightly higher than the previous norm, as predicted by almost everyone.

91,168 at the Melbourne Cup.

Highest crowd since 2016, but still falls short of the 100K+ crowds the event used to get through the 2000s to mid 2010s.

Those Melbourne crowds are stinkers - especially the Melbourne city one on public holiday eve.
MCG had the ODI opposite the road, but not really and excuse.

Western United is clearly a poorly thought out team in pure sporting reasons. The extra cash from Fox combined with the fact that the sport was being used as a vehicle for other land development reasons by the owners is the only reason it even has existed as a team. I don't think crowds of this size are ever truly unsurprising in that context for people who had common sense foresight. They couldn't even build a proper fanbase over time with a nomadic introduction.

Cricket really needs to get itself back on FTA or it WILL go down the same path as Rugby Union.

They need to start treating themselves as the dominant summer sport, and not some niche interest on pay TV and streaming.

With the non-test International matches hidden behind a pay wall, hardly anyone knows they are even being played anymore. Crowds have halved, and saying that is probably being generous.

  • Sydney - v Pakistan - day 1 - 33905
  • Adelaide - v West Indies - day 1 - 26361
  • Brisbane - v West Indies - day 2 - 29216
