List Mgmt. 2022 AFL Draft & Rookie Draft

Some decent names didn't get picked up in the rookie draft such as Szybkowski, Gilbey, D’Aloia, Hagan, Gilbee, Teal, Sadler and Phillips.

You've gotta feel for these kids - they'd be absolutely shattered after not achieving their dream - although these days there are still pathways to an AFL list via the SSP and mid-season drafts....

You've also gotta take a moment to pass a thought for the poor sods who have to go and play for * or the Aints.
Do we have space for an SSP? If so, I'd bring in Phillips or try to sign him to our VFL side as a Mid season watch.

No, we're full now. Of course, that can change if we suffer an LTI before the start of the season.

If I've just jinxed us, I'm blaming you.

think it’s a backward step giving Ed a rookie spot…
his best is well truly behind him…doubt very much he will get a senior game. if the reason of keeping him is because of service offer him captaincy of the two’s.

He’s a break glass in emergency option, number 42 on the list.
It really is no big deal 10-15 players won’t play a senior game at all for the year, but if he’s fit and the time comes when he’s needed then you know what you’re going to get.
Wasn’t happy he was potentially taking a primary list spot, but it’s a no brainer on the rookie list

I hope the pou has a far longer and more successful career than Tsatas, there, I said it

Austin & Co had a A+++++ campaign.

Forget whoever we traded and drafted in, they have given us a major * DeathRide next year. We have got their precious future 4th Rder.

I know the depth of genuine Luv and respect here for the Bombres (they are all our 2nd fave side), but we're gonna have to put that aside and board the DeathRide next year.

How do you know he refused to engage with recruiters were you a fly on the wall
and all your comments on our picks were negative nelly stuff how about we wait until we’ve seen how the lads go Jimmie
You've misread my comment: I've said I'm given the impression that he made strong demands of recruiters, and dismissed the efforts of his coaching staff to deliver solutions to his issues.

Repeatedly tried to ditch O'Brien, tried to fall back on Newnes, brought in Acres, refused to use Walsh there, drafted two more options. There's examples in other parts of the ground too, including the total unwillingness to play Dow, even when Kennedy's form fell away before injury.
That's right, Cowan a 17yo, when he's 22, those names you mentioned will be in need of a good pasture....

Hard to believe Doc's almost 30, what a journey.

Binns and Hollands are elite runners, just a question of where/how they fit into a 22 - and at whose expense!

You'd expect our VFL side to be prominent next year.

Two wingers out of LOB, Acres, Hollands, Binns, Cotters.

Acres a cert for one spot, the other?
Walsh and LOB for the rest, mix up the centre square and general stoppage mix.
Did the Owies upgrade happen? Didn't see any mention of it.

Rookie upgrades were due to happen in the hour after the draft finished, but haven't seen any mention of it happening.
Assuming the upgrade, we're 36/6/1, so it checks out that this is what transpired.
So keener draft watchers, how did we go? Were our picks good value or did we reach a little to try and fit needs?

Cowan to me seems a bit of a bargain, however how do the rest stack up?
I think Hollands was a shade off the best value on the board, Cowan was solid, Binns was average, Lemmey was high value.

Apparently he turned a few clubs off. I am happy he was gone one pick before ours.
There's a lot of angles there that can't be readily surmised with the info we have. Speaks smartly, but that's a shallow assessment from our perspective.

You have to look into if he has a chip on his shoulder due to being constantly challenged, the nature of that, etc. Also need to see what exactly he's driving for if he wants that kind of exposure and spotlight... does he want to change the industry for the better? What's the rhetoric and ideas there?

Most clubs will probably roll their eyes and move on, but the AFL isn't exactly a progressive space a lot of the time, so we don't exactly know which extreme he's at.
Almost impossible with the VFL salary cap being so low.
Might be time for the VFL to become its own enterprise now, with the ability to generate revenue and advertisers.

Am I right in assuming unless a team selects Liam Stocker in the mid season draft next year he won't start the season on an AFL list?

Repeatedly tried to ditch O'Brien

Who? Vossy did?

Dropped him when he had dropped his head, gave him clear directions in the few VFL games he played and when he was good to go was promoted again.

LOB had the best development year of his career under Vossy and it wasn't remotely close.

Not sure how many teams have supplementary picks left but if not then you're right. He gets added to the list of delisted Carlton players not to get an immediate crack elsewhere

There's the pre-season supplementary period right up until the end of March, I think?

Anyone with an open rookie or senior list spot can sign him via that mechanism.

I would argue that development started in the second half of last year via Power's efforts.

If he gets picked in the Mid-season Draft, he won't have started the season.

He could still get picked up in SSP. He started training with St Kilda, not sure if they've still got a list spot.

It probably did. But he couldn’t get on the park under Teague. Vossy, on the other hand, showed faith in him (unlike many a supporter on here). Played 19 games.

Bullshit, I’ll take my drafting advice from Jimmae and Paf, so much knowledge and experience

To be clear, I liked what the Saints were prepared to do with Phillipou, Hotton and Keeler, but looking back through everything I'm a bigger fan of the Dogs' drafting overall: Busslinger, Clarke, Gallagher. They've got solid players who could all turn into stars.

PAF is pushing a much harder barrow than I am. I would rate our draft a B, Saints a B+, Dogs A, but the path to greater excellence - IMO - was right there at the same points in the draft.

It's been a while since we took 4 players in the National Draft. Pretty happy we have decided to invest in more youth this season, not an avid draft watcher at all (in fact, calling me a novice would be pushing it) but i am reassured so many opposition fans think we did very well with our picks.

I know a lot of us wanted Hotton, but I am very okay with the Binns selection at this stage. Definitely not grouchy about it !!!

That's a really interesting picture: three endurance beasts with similar characteristics without being completely the same (Hollands classy with some inside game, Cowan with accumulation and endurance, Binns with a superboot and goalsense) and a highly rated KPF in need of more instant development who has played defense and is good kicking inside 50. Ed getting rerookied is also interesting.

This suggests that the coaching group still thinks we're short around the ball, that we don't have the transition or the wings just right, and - more importantly - that we're genuinely not running out games and are vulnerable defensively in transition. There's now real pressure for spots on the wing, even if there's not really on the forward flanks (which is something I had really hoped for in this draft) but to an extent that's compensated for by improvement in Durdin, Motlop and Cuningham's recovery (fingers crossed, touch wood and salt thrown over my left shoulder).

It also suggests that they don't see Carroll as a wing, as if they did why would they draft 3 potential alternates and trade in Acres?

I'm content with this. I'll be very interested in how we start up next year, how we structure up in the reserves, where they start off Lemmey, where Kemp plays. I really want them to push Kemp inside the stoppage in reserves, resting him up forward as required to get him into midfield form because - and I say this with love - I do not see him as any other position than an AFL mid. Take advantage of his X-factor and put him into the centre as the rotating dynamic midfielder, exhaust him every game until it starts to click, then throw him into the mix in the ones.

They're also backing the key defenders to all stay fit, which is suuuuuper interesting. Hopefully it means something's changed.
