Just had a look at our last decade of rookie drafts.

Outside of Zurhaar and Turner there's a whole bunch of nothing. For perspective, in the decade prior we picked up Michael Firrito, Josh Gibson, Scott McMahon, Leigh Adams, Matt Campbell, Nathan Grima, Majak Daw, Aaron Mullett, and Sam Gibson.

More or less nobody has had any idea what they were doing since Stibbard left. Of course, we sacked him right after he picked up Robbie Tarrant, Scott Thompson, Nathan Grima and Levi Greenwood.

Lewis comes in and takes Atley over Isaac Smith, because he read Atley was supposed to go pretty high in the phantoms. Finds only four 150+ game players in his first eight years in charge, with Ben Mckay the only player with any chance of adding to that count. Jamie MacMillan of course would be the only one of those to be outside of the first round.

On his way out Lewis finally had a good draft with Simpkin, Larkey and Zurhaar, but the **** up in the middle with Declan Watson and Josh Williams still leaves a bad taste in your mouth, and then it's on to Finnigan who started by taking Will Walker in the most loaded second round of all time. The jury is still out on some of his selections, but there's plenty of **** ups already and nobody who is looking like an out-and-out gun.

His most successful rookie selection was Tom Murphy with 9 games. That's over five drafts.

Needless to say that I'm praying that we get a Kinnear Beatson announcement next month.

Nev also proposed drafting Joel Selwood but was overruled by the medical team because Joel's knee problem was likely to shorten his career. 👍

For those that facetiously dismiss the rookie draft-
More recent examples include Blicavs, Dan Houston, Tippa, Oscar McInerney, Jiath, Rowan Marshall, Jake Lloyd and Tom Papley.
We had a purple patch in the 00's getting Leigh Harding, Gibson, Firrito and Aaron Edwards. If we didn't rookie the last 3 it's hard to imagine we still finish top 4 in 2007, a crucial year for our club's continuation.
It matters ffs. That we haven't found a decent rookie this decade is a reason, albeit small, for our recent shit performance.
Hopefully we righted the ship this draft.
