Dude what are you on about? Priddis was recognised as the best player in the comp for a season. Selwood never did that.

So Brownlow votes are now the metric for best player? Selwood has the 8th most Brownlow votes in the history of the game, so by your logic he is better than Dustin Martin. GAJ has the most ever so is clearly the GOAT, again using your infallible logic

Not sure about how a team is performing necessarily has an impact. Afterall, Sam Taylor is in and GWS finished 16th.
But yes, don't know what more the selectors could have asked of him.

Only thing I could find is the stat on 'contested defensive losses' where you had this:

May 10%
Taylor 13.7%
Maynard 17%
Stewart 20.8%
Sicily 25.8%

So of those 5, Sicily lost the greatest % of contests in defense.

Apart from that, not sure why he isn't selected in the AA.

The total number matters as well. Also, is that one-on-one or simply when they attend a contest which could have had any number of people?

You'd probably also want to look at % of contests won.

I’m sure you can work out % defensive contests won given you have % defensive contests lost

Id say plenty end up no win.

Hitouts to advantage and total hitouts doesnt tell you hitouts to disadvantage.

Sicily took the most intercept marks and a huge number of contested marks, so he probably attended twice as many contests, or more, as May. Id bet 3 times as many as Stewart.

Dude do you actually follow convos at all? He was talking about RECOGNITION. Read.

You used Brownlow votes as the metric to recognise the best player, no? So Selwood > Dusty and GAJ is the GOAT according to your logic on recognition. There, I used your words so you can hopefully understand the English language a little better

Ok but the stats show what % lost.

I'm not saying that it should outweigh the other stats. Again, I think Sicily should have been in the AA team. Just trying to work out what argument the selectors may use as to his non-selection.

He deserved to be in the team. Hopefully he has another great year and is duly recognised.

I'd never want to get in to the minds of the selectors.

No you don’t. You look at the whole CV. Selwoods peak isn’t impressive doesn’t have many peak performance accolades such as the Brownlow. But he is consistent. Brownlow votes supports that. If you think consistency means more than peak performance you’ll rate Selwood highly. Facts are facts though, we was never recognised as the best player in the comp.

yes he was never recognised as the best player in a particular year by the umpires. Very true. Calling his peak not impressive and saying he doesn't have accolades is a little disingenuous though wouldn't you admit?

So Leigh Matthews was not the best? Or Wayne Carey? Neither won a Brownlow. And the year Selwood was runner up he was just beaten by one of the GOATS, Gary Ablett Junior.

Selwood's CV is impressive by any measure

He doesn’t have MVP, coaches award or Norm smith either. So not really, none of those bodies thought so. He has AAs, courageous player awards and Brownlow votes. All those relate to consistency/courage rather than peak performance like I was saying. When you actually break down what I am saying, my positions are not unreasonable.

Carey and Matthews both got MVPs they are peak performance awards. For the rest of selwoods CV refer to my previous post to Woj. I don’t say these things Willy nilly.

And you wonder why posters treat you with contempt. I seriously question what your agenda is...

Also forget about awards for a second. Just off the cuff wouldn’t you guys agree Selwood has been more consistent than Dusty but Dusty has a better peak? The awards generally tell the story of what people think anyway.

What is the problem with my comment exactly? They do have MVPs Selwood doesn’t. It’s fact. So my logic is still inline with Carey and Matthews being some of the GOATs.

Sure and I've never said otherwise, but your previous arguement was to try and say that Selwood could never be considered great because he didn't win a Brownlow and I was just applying your logic to a situation I knew you'd be aware of.

If you read carefully I said his ‘peak’ is not considered great. He’s a good consistent performer. And as I said previously if you value consistency he’s probably a great in your eyes. He isn’t to me, I don’t believe anybody who hasn’t been recognised as the best player in the comp at a point in time should be. I have a high bar some people have lower bars for ‘greatness’ each to their own.

I’d love to know who wrote this rule book

If you haven’t realised everything is all opinion based mate. I even said it at the end of the comment you just replied to. What is your problem?

I’m just curious as to why you would have such a rigid application of these ‘rules.’

Jason Dunstall was probably never even the best forward in the AFL much less the best player.

I’d struggle to find any criteria under which you couldn’t call him a great.

I think the issue is you try and use parameters for your opinions but then change them to suit whatever your argument is.

Coleman’s are peak performance medals. He has like 4 I think. I’ve said many times I don’t expect non-mids to win Brownlows etc This again falls inline with my logic.
