He is an inconsistent player. Will play a great game, then a quiet one. His kicking can be iffy at times and some question whether he finds enough of the ball. You want your top 10 picks to produce week in and out. That is not to say he is not top 10 worthy, as even the best have weaknesses. When he is on, he is really damaging. Hopefully he lands at the right club that will get the best out of him more often than not.
He will be a ripper in the right system. He has all the tools TBH.
Just the matter between the ears.
Like the majority of players in the league.

It was going to be limited to teams' first 20 years in the comp, but considering how few FS picks the interstate clubs have gotten they extended it indefinitely. Note that the cutoff is games played before the VFL became the AFL, it's not for current state-league players.
Jim was nearly 50 when Max Michalanney was born, so I'd say that this might be the last opportunity to access under that rule as most players that played during the time of eligibility are way beyond having kids now

I wouldn't say it's a rumour per say, but Humphrey to Hawthorn suddenly made sense to me today.

1. One media report said we were interested in bigger bodied mids.
2. We lack a genuine mid/fwd with match winning capabilities (Dylan Moore the closest since Wingard doesn't play in the guts anymore).
3. He posted a story on Instagram standing near to the Kennedy statue at Waverly recently, so clearly we have interest in him.

The Humphrey/Ginbey/Clark/Mackenzie/Phillipou logjam is an intriguing one if the top 5 go as anticipated.

Would be wary of drafting Humphrey ,hearing rumours that he gets in all manner of strife.

I didn't realise the WA teams had access to sons of wafl players too. Was there some sort of end date in these arrangements?
It seems like it would become an unfair advantage once the WA and SA teams have existed long enough to generate father sons from the AFL teams.
Given:
  • Port have had one father son pick via this rule (Brett Ebert - who wasn't technically eligible despite father Russel playing ~390 odd games)
  • The Crows are about to get their first (who also probably shouldn't be eligible if the same rules were applied to his father Jim as were applied to Darryl Borlase - who's total went from ~210 down to 187 once preseason and night-time cup games were removed)
  • I would say no unfair advantage gained

I think most port supporters would say just give us access to all the port SANFL players at 100 games like everyone else and let the crows do what they like. It would have given us access to Brad Ebert and James Borlase (instead of him going to the crows as an academy player cause he was bornin Egypt, lol) and I think that's it.

Lol

Nah, the afl and sanfl stitched us up. We have different f/s rules.

Brad eberts dad played 180ish games (off the top of my head) for port and Brad wasn’t eligible.

Even Brett who port got as a father son wasn’t actually eligible lol, they only realised afterwards. Which just shows how farcical the rule is when the progeny of Russell ******* ebert doesn’t qualify.

Also from memory gibbs would have qualified under f/s to port had his old man not cracked the shits and had Glenelg reassigned to the crows only for him not to be eligible to the crows due to crossing 200 games after the crows joined the comp (the cutoff date to reach 200 games under the rules).
What was the criteria when Brett ebert was drafted? Russell played almost 400 games for port in the sanfl

Borlase could have refused to be drafted by Adelaide if he was hell-bent on going to Port but he was smart enough to realise Port weren't going to take him if he did. Hence he was taken as a rookie and likely struggles to to ever play AFL anyhow. It will be interesting to see when he gets delisted if he plays for the Port magpies or Sturt in the SANFL.

Or course borlase was going to take the guaranteed offer over going into the open draft.

The fact borlase isn’t a great player really isn’t important in the issue of how the afl and sanfl screwed both our clubs over with the f/s rule.

The fact the afl learnt they stuffed up the rules on games eligible, then shrugged their shoulders and did nothing is tantamount to cheating in my opinion.

I’m not sure what else you would call knowingly giving 2 clubs a handicap.

The afl should have immediately adjusted the games needed to reflect what they were meant to be in the first place, which likely would have been 150 games, and all this bullshit would have been avoided.

It's 100 games for a F/S btw. Ed Allen wasn't eligible because Ben only played 96.
The f/s is a complete pigs dinner.

Ben Allen played 66 games for Claremont and 47 for Freo, including being its first Captian - but somehow isn't considered aligned enough for Ed to be f/s. How Andrew McGovern's kids must feel is beyond me.

When I think of Ben Allan career, I think of him as a hawk. Its where he played his best football so they should be getting first preference for his son to be drafted over Freo.

If we're trading down to St. Kilda, we're not adding a second. A F3 at best.

They're trading up to a top 5 pick. GWS had to trade their F1 straight up to move up 2 selections from 6 to 4 at the 2019 draft. Last year Port had to give up their F2 to trade up from 14 to 12.

10 and an F1 for 5 and what will end up as 24/25 is a ridiculously good deal for St. Kilda on market rates.
You probably know the draftee quality better than me Eth. But from everything I can gather there's not a lot of difference this year between pick 4 and pick 10. So on "face" value 4 and 22 for 9 and 9? seems a good deal for us imo.

But like I mentioned it's subjective. If a club really wants a particular player, they will give up more than trade value to move up. As in previous trades you mentioned.

It's moot. His games there don't count either.

Either have father/son or don't. The way it is now is idiotic.

There's a clear cut top 5, period. Ignore the outside noise. They'd be lucky to get that F3. There is absolutely no way we do that trade and we'd be stupid to do so.

They're buying up to a top 5 pick. Half the reason we'd do the deal is to allow us more flexibility in trading pick 22 with our F2 up to a team in that 14-20 range (Melbourne, Sydney x2, GWS x3, Collingwood).

I think Cam McKenzie will end up being inside the best 5 from this draft.

Is the GWS trade really relevant or comparable? They were desparate to get ahead of a Tom Green bid and had just come off a Grand Final season.

In their eyes, they were effectively trading future teens pick to get both Ash and Green rather than letting a bid come in and only getting 1 of them

He played 98 afl games for us and we didn't want him to go, how do you think we feel?

I feel you man.

As a young man who loved nothing more than watching Claremont, it was pretty hard watching him leave (especially after watching you guys chew up and spit out Steve Malaxos) :)
