Damien Hardwick is next up in our Coach's Clipboard series

What has Robbie Tarrant brought to the table so far?

That was a really good get. Robbie been a fantastic servant at North and been a one-club player, he is a really loyal guy so for him to commit to the Tigers was a really, really tough challenge for him because he loves that footy club that he has been with for 13 or 14 years. We are really excited to have him, he is a big boy, I didn‘t realise the size of him. We lost Dave Astbury who was a wonderful leader of our football club and Robbie is just going to come in and make a seamless transition and be really good for Josh Gibcus down there and Tom Brown who is another kid we are really excited about.

I think Gibcus will play a bit this year but he’s $274k so it’s a no from me.

Jake Soligo is pushing for an early AFL debut, according to Adelaide teammate Reilly O’Brien.

The youngster was selected by the Crows with pick 36 in last year’s draft and has impressed in pre-season training, so much so that he could force his way into Matthew Nicks’ senior side in the early stages of this season.

Soligo played as both a midfielder and forward for Eastern Ranges in 2021, while also playing for Richmond in the VFL, and has similar traits to Lachlan Sholl.

O’Brien is backing his housemate to make an impact in his debut campaign.

“Jakey Soligo is living with me at the moment and he’s going really well,” O’Brien said on SEN SA Breakfast.

“I think he’s a big chance to play early in the year on a wing or in the midfield. Look out for him. He runs all day, he’s similar to the Lachie Sholl mould.

“He’s really composed with the ball and he’s tough around the ball. He’ll be a good player.”

Nothing like Lachie Sholl .......Reminds me in his style of a Shaun Higgins type player .....Sholl is all outside, Jake primarily inside, but also spreads well

I hope he gets one of the final two spots, Clarke is one my favourites but he could go VFL back to AFL, Martyn looks good

Just depends on Tippa

Apparently Boyd at Blues is looking likely for a spot in their backline. 190k. I'd potentially add O'Driscoll as well

Ah yep id read a bit about Boyd being a chance

Still likely they have Weitering, Young, Gov and then 4 smalls (Saad, Zac Williams, Doc, N.Newman, Plowman, T.Williamson, Stocker, Kemp)

Is a significant group to get past as a small defender. They could opt for 2 talls plus a Plowman or Kemp and then play a few of those listed on wings.

Its just significant group to go past for a late draft pick

Im sure if hes named on the Wedneaday then hes everyones D8 though

On those you listed Doc + Stocker are unlikely to start the season at least. I'd imagine mid season for both. I think they only go with 2 of Weitering + Young/Gov with Plowman the other lockdown. Leaves Saad, Z Williams, Newman, Williamson, Kemp. Can definitely see Williams playing wing with potentially Newman. Still a tough side to crack into but new coach so anything could happen with crazy Vossy at the helm. FlowersByIrene should be able to shed some light at what his chances are. I know we're all crying out for a couple decent 190k defender rookies as it's been slim pickings last few years

Yes, Boyd was apparently the surprise packet of the pre-season with some strong performances as a back pocket, whether that translates into actual selection in the side is a question. Another one who has done a couple of good things is O'Brien. In an odd way they're almost competing for the same position as, as you've noted, we've got a flexible backline and could move Williams or Saad up or back down the ground to fill holes. For example if O'Brien plays, Williams plays flank, pushed Saad to back pocket and no Boyd. If Boyd plays it pushes Saad or Williams up to the wing and no O'Brien.

Taking into account the following injuries: Walsh (will miss first four weeks), Stocker (will miss first two weeks), Docherty, Setterfield, Cuningham all touch and go as not in full training, I'd expect our side to look like this.

FB: Plowman Weitering Saad
HB: Newman McGovern Williams
R: TDK, Cripps, Cerra
C: O'Brien Hewett Curnow
HF: Martin Curnow Fisher
FF: JSOS McKay Owies

Int: Take your pick from Boyd, Dow, Kennedy, Setterfield, Kemp, Williamson, Carrol, Pittonet, Honey, Cuningham plus whoever is fit.

If Doch is fit, he probably plays wing / seventh defender and knocks O'Brien to the bench

But that being said, this is based on how we lined up last year and some inklings from this pre-season. I have absolutely no idea how Vossy will select a side until we see some pre-season games.
