Regardless of result I think they’d be happy to finish top 4 after 17th(!) last year.
Depends how you want to frame “achieved nothing” I suppose.
If it’s binary premiership or bust, you’re right, but not a bad start from the bloke.
Love that he states what he expects and holds everyone to it.

If we'd got this far I don't think Ratts would have too many disappointed.

De Goey would have been stupid to sign a contract before the finals, with the game he played yesterday he'll get a better offer from us and Collingwood.

Collingwood playing for about 3 months at the MCG with no travel was probably a bigger factor in them winning the replay, they were fresher than us.

We had to take our chance in the first GF when Collingwood did their usual GF choke, just a pity it didn't go to extra time as we probably would've won.
I mean, Nick Maxwell and Lenny Hayes have both specifically told that story but sure you would know better.

Probably a bunch of stuff that played into that loss (including collingwood being the better team) it was just highlighting the point that McRae would have considered the importance of getting onto the next game ASAP.

It was pretty obvious our players were spent after spending all their petrol tickets in our comeback the week before and we went in with a few injured players that probably shouldn't have played. I think Robert Eddy played with a broken hand, he was bad enough playing fully fit let alone injured.

Maybe we could've handled the preparation for the GF replay better but it's not something you can plan for as it rarely happens and won't happen again.

Gram got through game one full of pain killer but looked stuffed after that.

Uh huh, and some of that fatigue was likely mental because we didn’t really move on from the draw and they did (which is exactly what Lenny Hayes and Nick Maxwell have spoken about).

It wasn’t just one thing (or two thing that you’ve just decided) that made Collingwood win and us lose and the mindset thing is likely one, so whilst I initially thought McRaes comments were a bit rough I think there’s a bit of merit to them now.

Without doubt we were still carrying the scars from 2009.
Getting up for 3 GF games in two years was just a bridge too far.

Extra time and who knows what might have been….typical Saints luck.

Love what Fly said about laying down.

The job's not done yet Pies. You can lay down and get upset when the season is over. Until then you carry yourself with the expectations/presence of a winner.

Should have won in 97, 09, 10 and should have at least made it in 04.

Convert those and we’d all be totally different people! 🤣

Degoey...I can see the attraction...but would his heart be in it? This is the big problem with a team like ours. Stars going to big clubs like Geelong are assured of success AND a good deal. All we offer is a super fund for life (If the player isn't as thick as two short planks) I can't help but shake the feeling that players think we're an easy target ripe for manipulation.
I think we're better off just sticking to the draft.
100% agree with you on this, I have the exact same concerns.

If he comes to us then it would be a ‘massive coup’ for the club but I can see those media reports quickly turning into him being an $800k bust that doesn’t improve us much on the field as he is only in it for the cash. Which he would be. It’s the sad reality, if he chose to move to Saints he is moving for money only.

We aren’t playing finals at the G in from of over 90,000 people.

The best chance we have at a flag is to draft and develop our own talent and keep the group together, then you can look at adding a few moneyball top ups.

The closest we’ve come in recent history in 09 and 10 was a team where the core talent was drafted in and developed.

Probably the case 99% of the time, with some of the few exceptions being Dangerfield who was chasing a flag, and may yet get one and Membrey and Steele and the like who moved for opportunity.

I would imagine money and contract length would be the overriding factor in most cases as a FA and good luck to them..as long as they put in for their new club.

Surely after the Hill and Hanner's fiasco, we are at least more cautious. I know the board is being seen to be asking more questions about the footy department and their attitude to trading (at least externally) but there seems to be a bit of distance as to the reality of the list still. Guys like Howard were a proper need, and arguably still is. Butler and Higgins don't concern me too much, they provide more good than not, despite shortcomings. However guys like Jones could have been sourced cheaper and younger if we had of looked at guys not getting a gig in other senior teams, or even in the lower levels.
We just need to stop looking at the bright lights and shiny stuff, be smarter, and get to work.

Why is Hill a fiasco? He hadn't been a raging success ( either has the team) but his overall performances are far from a fiasco.
The revisionist hyperbole on Hill is becoming idiotic.
Hill is not my favourite player, would be happy to see him traded, but this carry on like Hill is the worst player in the league is beyond ridiculous.

The only hyperbole i read was in your post where you implied there's been carry on that he's the worst player in the league.

Are you kidding? Most of the talk on this board for the last several weeks was how much of a monumental ****up getting Hill was/is etc etc. There is a shit tonne of carry on from a lot of people who frankly are ****ing terrible football analysts.

There's been a lot of observation that he has been poor and that we significantly overpaid. The fact is, he has been poor in large chunks and some defensive efforts have been downright embarrassing. However, if you can point me to people saying he's the among the worst in the league, I'm all ears.

Oh, youre just trolling.

That is an incredibly hyperbolic post there man. Have a chamomile tea and a nap...you'll feel better.

Come on man, it was a disastrous trade in that we spent so much capital on him and wages and lost development of others for a player who didn't suit the footy Ratts wanted its to play. He should have been dropped in 2020 through poor form and we had to put him off HBF to justify a position, reports that other players were pissed off at having him getting games ahead of others etc. We are about to have to give him away cheap after getting FA out of him. To me it's worse than Hanners. At least Hanners came cheap apart from the wage and at his peak he was a star. Hill was like the fourth best player in a bottom 8 side that we paid superstar money and capital to obtain. It was one of the worst trades outside of Dayne Beams back to Collingwood or Bryce Squibbs to Adelaide.

Absolute hyperbolic BS. Do you believe the shit you post? Really if you think this crap you are delusional.

Hill has be OK and that's it. To say being Ok for what we paid is good is certainly not, it is very disappointing and was not a good trade. However to say it is as bad as the two highlighted makes you sound like a fool, which I know you are not. Cut the hysteria.

Hill was a bad choice however his performance hasn't been any worse than it was a Freo, which is why I thought it was a curious choice in the first place. He seemed Ok at the Hawks who were a threepeat premiership team, but was fair to Ok at Freo and Fair to OK only.

Saying we are going to give him away for cheap again is hysterical claptrap. We wont get back what we paid for him which make the original trade a poor one, however he is contracted, he wont be given away at all. if we can't get something that satisifies us he will not be traded.

Really the OOT panicked hyperbole and made up hysterical comparisons are frankly a bit embarrassing. It feels like this place is the new Facebook for such ill conceived and shockingly inaccurate rubbish.

God I would hate to be in the trenches with some of you nancy boys.
