He was best for mine in the first half just so clean. Scooped the ball up tapped the ball around to his advantage then like Mundy manages to create space for himself and use the ball well by hand or foot.

He seemed to drop away second last quarter and not unexpected with his very limited pre-season. But I agree entirely we have a good one in Johnson. We may not see him this seaon but we will start seeing a lot of him next year with an injury free run.

Once he is fully fit he'll be in the best 22 and then starting 18 next season

Since Johnson was drafted. I have not made many comments as I haven't observed him enough to cast a judgement. Over the past few wafl games and the early preseason intra clubs prior to his injury Johnson has looked slick, composed and smart.

His handball to receiver and out of congestion plus his kicking is superb.

I honestly believe it's a matter of fitness and experience. Freo struck gold with GC.

Brawshaw

Brodie

Serong

Johnson

Eurasmus

O'Driscoll

Switta

Henry

Thats a perfectly balanced engine room for many years to come. Some of these players just need a bit of wafl form and to build their body up for the rigours of AFL.

They will be kicking to Amiss and Jackson (most likely) with Darcey resting forward.

Totally agree and I believe you can add Worner as well. I was concerned the addition of Angus would've delayed the development of one or two of these and put us at risk of losing them. Short term, yes the benefit would've been there, but long term, no. This midfield is so exciting and better balanced than we've had for a long time.

We can now focus on our forwardline.

Yes, exactly my thoughts. Angus I wanted as we might be able to win a premiership short term with him. So I actually am disappointed Freo didn't manage to grab him.

However long term we have the core for sustainained success with our strong backline and young midfield emergence.

The one key aspect is a couple of really good small forwards and possibly one gun key forward which isn't easy to acquire.

Zuharr could be a part of the solution as a mid sized forward with hopefully Sturt being the other. Then Freo could target a few small forwards in the draft if they are available at our picks. Its easier said than done but this situation isn't out of the realms of possibility and in the next few years Freo could explode.

Our young list has shown how good they are during the season but many posters may not realise how hard it is to sustain that level all season. 2 to 4 years time Freo will be an absolute force.

We can now focus on our forwardline.
Our future forward line:

Schultz Amiss Frederick
(Jackson) Treacy Switkowski

Sturt, Logue, Kuek, Western, Banfield, (Lobb), Taberner, Fyfe

Do you think the focus needs to be on development or recruitment?

Unlike our midfield which is pretty much complete it is not simply one or the other, but I see it more as development. The recruitment can be incremental/opportunistic rather than a wholesale change as has happened midfield.

It'll be both, recruitment and development as it always is.

Lobb almost certainly going, so he'll need to be replaced. The talk of recruiting Jackson is wise. Who knows what Logue is doing. We still need a quality small and medium and I'd go the draft for those.

Re development, Amiss, Treacy, Freddy, Sturt, Kuek, Benning, and Western need to be further developed.

The balance the club needs to achieve is about:

1) giving development opportunity (= game time) to Amiss, Treacy, Sturt, Western etc

Versus

2) going for the win (= game time) to Taberner, Banfield, Colyer etc.

I would have liked a bit more of option 1 this season.

I'm reasonably happy with the balance. Amiss, Treacy, Sturt and Western got the opportunities they were afforded by form and injury. Raz got some well deserved opportunities.

We're playing finals and at times were pushing for a top 2 spot so the season has been successful so far so I'm thinking they got it about right.

Yeah. Talking about next season.

Each to their own, I’m disappointed that Erasmus, Treacy, even Meek didn’t get
enough games.
Happy for NOD, Amiss selections..
Erasmus as an 18 year old has smashed wafl, not many kids dominate against
men.
Benning in defence is the obvious replacement/backup for Pearce.

Yeah. Talking about next season.

Next season is exciting. Raz, Johnson, Henry, Amiss, Treacy and Worner should be given plenty of opportunities and then Western, Sturt, Benning have the chance to push for selection and if we draft a couple of gooduns they'll be a chance too.

I see Tabs, Colyer, Banfield, Walters and Mundy getting much less of a look in at selection meetings as the season progresses.

Best thing about next year is closer to Walters, Mundy and Colyer leaving. With respect of course

Agree they are not list cloggers and must be respected for their years of significant contribution. Many of these young guys are not ready for a full AFL season yet but they should have played a few more games this year to freshen up the side. Johnson should have been rotated in. It may have also alleviated the unwanted need to play Benning and more so Worner in the ressies, a level which is well too low for him and given the opportunity for a discussion on a debut to see how he could fill a role in years to come.

Johnson struggles to run out a WAFL game, so it would've been a terrible move to select him for league.

Not sure about your thinking on WAFL reserves. Giving games to young players in the AFL means that you're dropping someone down to WAFL so your still in the same boat.

Johnson would be ok with limited game time - They ran Erasmus at about 60 % when he played so sure Johnson can also cope with this and have an impact and get experience. Would not have Mundy playing WAFL too much respect but a weeks rest every now and then has been afforded to many players of his age to freshen them up as apart from Friday has not had much impact this year. This alleviates this issue of dropping to the reserves other players who should be developed properly at WAFL.

Johnson needs a preseason. He'd blow up in no time at AFL level.

Amiss is pure silk. All class

We need to build around him. That kid will pull a 50 goal season before we even wrap our heads around it
A preseason in the gym and I genuinely think he can start contributing next year

We need to start preparing for next year NOW - that means at least 3 changes this week, with Switta and Fyfe in against GWS. On current form we will not beat Footscray but win the next two. The side that plays the first round next year needs to be at least 6 players different from the side that played Friday (taking into account Jackson, Switta and Fyfe). The other three should come from Johnson, Erasmus, Sturt, Treacy and Meek.

I think it would be better if we just get him super fit. He is likely to play as a 3rd
tall.
Our main forwards could be Jackson, Tabs or Treacy.
But you can almost guarantee that Tabs will break down and miss games.
Logue has proven he is multi positional.
Medium talls in Fyfe, Mundy, Erasmus, Sturt, Banfield.
Small forwards in Switta, Freddy, Shultz, Henry, Western.
Sonny really needs to earn his spot, depth, teaching role.
There is enough talent to work with I think?
