Training 2022 Pre-season

Just read that Tom Joyce is training with West Coast. Only one list spot and 3 train on players. Fingers crossed the young fella gets another opportunity at senior level. Really deserves it and wish him all the best.

Tom's a smart player who did enough to get a chance with us but it never happened. He's good enough to be playing AFL somewhere.

The way everyone talks about Answerth when he’s mentioned says to me if he’s fit he’ll be in the team, after the way Coleman finished last season I think he should also get first crack. I just don’t see the spot for Zorko to start in the backline, could he float back there during play like what was mentioned with Neale last season, sure I can see that. Just can’t see him being picked as one of our 7 defenders.
The plan may be to play a more counterattacking style via a permanent extra defender, instead of the in-your-face pressure we have become accustomed to over the last few years. Personally I doubt this; our pressure game has been a positive feature of our game (when the lads are mentally attuned to it) and that's one aspect of our strategy which is sustainable under finals pressure.

But there are many ways to skin the cat and maybe the plan is to force turnovers due to numbers behind the ball than at the source. I don't think it's a great idea - I think good teams always find a way through - but it is an option the coaching team may have considered given the number of times we got opened up after losing a ground ball contest (stoppage or general play) in 2021.
I don't think Zorko would be playing the Birchall role. I think it is likely he would be playing a zone defensive role outside defensive 50 and then aiming to be the first receiver from kicks coming out of defense with the possessions being received around the 50 or toward centre for a longer kick. That kind of running role would suit him and his ability to find space would help out the defensive unit quite a lot. They played Prior a little bit in that type of role last year but he did not find space particularly well. So for me I would expect a behind centre role if it eventuates rather than a defensive role.
You're talking about the spot where he received that bullet pass from Rich against Geelong. Next thing you know Linc's kicking a goal from 55. That was probably my favourite goal of the year in 2021. Planning A+ and matched by the execution. Done right he can be a real weapon in that role.

Caleb Daniel is the prototype for Zorkos role. Someone who can pressure and organise in defence and then be available for the overlap runbout of defence. Zorko also has the maturity to go for a switch, dangerous kick or redirect play. That is something difficult for a player like Prior to do as a junior.

We complain that Cameron can get lost from the game when the ball doesn't get forward. Zorko is the same. He makes things happen when he is around the ball. They both exert pressure around the ball. When the ball isnt around their impact is limited. Id rather someone taller or stronger to play half forward. Rayner, Cockatoo or McFayden with their height and speed cant be ignored and zoned off when the ball is outside the forward line.

Laird rejuvenated his career last year at half back. I think Zorko at half back maximises his abilities as je ages.

I'm keen to see this happen, at least during the preseason, but I am conscious that Fagan has done this over the preseason in the past, only to revert to type within a couple of matches.

I think Fagan likes to take a look at novel ideas like this over summer (it's the right time to experiment) but I suspect he also uses it to keep his more mature player fresh and focused. Zorko probably wouldn't gain much having another season training with the mids but learning a different role, playing with a different group, might be a good way to develop some new skills or provide a different perspective.

I don't think we lose a lot in terms of ball winning by losing Zorko out of the mids and I think guys like Bailey and Rayner (and maybe a fit JBerry) could replicate some of the explosiveness Zorko provides. What we will be giving up is one of the best pressure mids in the comp. Each player going into the midfield to replace Zorks will need to considerably lift their defensive pressure.

I'm similarly sceptical, but I suppose the main reason we went away from the midfield rotation expirement of early 2021 is that we started 1-3. It was still being trialled in the cats game in Rd 2 early on up until we reverted back to our best ball winners being in there. If they can trial it against a bit of an easier opening fixture then it might stick a bit longer this time.

All very good to say there is competition for spots and some of the younger guys are playing in the firsts team but who are they. Really a tease of an video that tells us nothing.

Anyone get to training for the match sim today?

Any thoughts/opinion that it appears none of the academy kids are training with the senior team?

Personally I find it disappointing potentially on two fronts.

1. That the best academy kids aren’t getting the chance to train with the senior team, regardless if the club views them as draftable or not.

2. That it might be an indication that the club doesn’t view any of this years academy prospects as potentially draftable.

FWIW I like this year's group a lot more than last year and I would rate it the best (from what little I have seen) in a while. There are quite a few guys who have skills and traits that could translate into them being AFL players. Virtually all of those guys need to develop a fair bit but there are a half dozen that I will be watching closely over the year to see if they can improve and round out their games.

Are they able to train with the AFL team? I had a feeling there were restrictions on draftable kids training with AFL teams.
Reading the draft board, the national academy kids are training with various clubs, and according to Collingwood posters, their NGA kids are training with their VFL side.

I think the national academy kids are the exception and training with the VFL side is different. So if our ressies team were training separately I would expect them to be there.

I don't really know but I will ask and come back to you.

To be fair, Ashcroft & Fletcher will most likely be drafted to the club at the end of the season and they were viewed last year as first round selections according to various sources, so without having much knowledge on where we stand for draft selection points on the upcoming draft, it wouldn't surprise me if they are the only selections we'll be making at the draft table in 2022 to help avoid being in negative points for future drafts, meaning we most likely won't be seeing much academy players training with the club during the season compared to previous years, unless we need academy top-ups for our VFL side again (if injuries frequently occur).

He wasn't up to it. Probably a blessing in disguise.

Get to pay him less money as a result too (think the payment for the inactive list is 25% of the CBA minimum salary). Honestly the best result taking a very cold look at it.

On the other hand I wish this hadn’t happened and cam had chosen to get vaccinated.
