Which is why, despite me liking a lot of his his work, he absolutely has to go spend some time in the vfl this year as the number 1 target.

I agree. With Stanley and Ceglar fit (and Hawkins and Cameron fit of course ) Sav should play VFL as no. 1 forward. Learning.

Remembering even that the VFL delivery is usually more haphazard he will realise that the young defenders he will be playing on are beatable and that jumping into packs is not the only way to get possession.

Leading out of the square, and one on one body work have to be learnt as a target forward. Not easily learnt as No3. decoy / part time ruck.

Hawkins came "good"....make that very good in the 2011 GF. 4th year in and was playing No.1 banana for most of those years.

Go Sav.

Yeah I just think that sav won't learn anything if he keeps just milling about taking a ruck contest here and there and then just hanging around down the wings looking for a down-the-line intercept or release marking target. It's not a real role and not fair on him being judged for just doing what the coaches tell him.

Is that what they are asking for though? or is that what they are getting,I'm unsure what his role is most games other than to add 10 minutes relief each quarter for Stanley in the ruck.

Well that in a nutshell is the problem, he's in for 10 mins relief with poorly defined busy work in between. There's no space for him as key, so what can he actually do? It's just a massive waste of a position

We tend to shoehorn players in at the expense of a balanced side to frequently for my likening I expect that won't change.

Frank is an immediate upgrade on Dahlhaus, I would hope next season we run with a forwardline that has;
Miers, Cameron, Stengle
Frank, Hawkins, Rohan

Think we’d likely also see Close in the forward line

I would love to see him up on a wing tbh. But that said I would imagine its Miers up the field and Close up forward.
I don't think Close is a very good forward, he's a fantastic link and pressure man but he hasn't got the goal greed that a good small forward has. Fanfooty calls him a flanker and thats more accurate imo- Covers heaps of ground, does fantastic work extending chains of ball movement, pressures and tackles well without the ball. So easy to forget that he basically walked into the best 22 in his first season and he is still very very green. Expecting a jump in output from him this year.

Close should be playing the role that Miers has been the last few years which is more a HFF that gets up the ground and links up which will allow the more dangerous forwards such as Miers/Evans/Stengle to be more of stay at home forwards.

Because lets face it they are much more dangerous inside forward 50.

He is never the target forward. I can remember only a few instances where he has been one out close to goal. He always has to find the ball in a crowd.
One time I do remember he destroyed Barass.
He is Hawkins replacement not his sidekick. Cameron was recruited for that purpose.

Has he been practicing as a Key forward? I question his skill and nous ... I doubt he will ever be Hawkins replacement.

Random question here, but a certain Hawks board mod just had a go at me on a random thread - then I responded in kind and got infracted while their post stands. Do certain board mods just have a dislike towards team posters they hate - and look to piss them off in order to get them infracted?

Genuine question here for other posters and board mods?

Iirc he got the call up in 2020 when GAJ was out and played virtually the same role as the little master as a high half forward. Showed clean hands in tight and great in the contest from the first game. I agree that he is better suited than Miers is to that role. I think Miers running capacity means the MC get tempted to play him further up the field than what he should.

The best example for Close being up the field was the passage of play that resulted in the sealer for Gary Rohan when we beat Port in Adelaide last year.

He did a power of running from the wing, burnt off his player;

Rohan causes the contest and then kicks it into space. Heaps of time to kick the ball to Rohan (not the cleanest) who finishes it off. But it was the run from the wing that could have been for nothing if Rohan marks at CHF, but that work ethic meant that when it became contested and got out to him he had a paddock and all because he outworked his opponent.

Rather Close in that role than Miers thats for sure. Close seems to be quicker, although I would love to see a comparison of their sprint times.

If you step into the Hawk Board, you are subject to their Board rules as interpreted by the Hawk mods...nothing much we can do about it.

My advice is to swallow it and move on.
