I wouldn't underestimate Portugal.

Just realised they haven't made the final four since 2002, their last win. Given it's Brazil, that is quite something.
To be fair, Brazil haven’t been strong until this year. It’s genetally been Neymar and co. Best chance in 20 years. Just qualify on every line. Depth too

I know it was a humiliating 7-1 defeat in 2014 as host but it still counts as a semi-final appearance!

Yup.

The astonishing thing for mine is that it’s the only S/F appearance since 2002.

Mind you, the Italians - four time winners current Euro champs - haven’t made it past the group stage since 2006. ( wont even have qualified for a decade by the time 2026 rolls by)

He'd still get a medal though wouldn't he?

Yes, he will. Everyone in the squad gets a medal if their country wins the tournament.

The original Ronaldo is a two time World Cup winner. 1994 and 2002.

Do they? I read that the only reason the Brazilian coach subbed on their backup keeper was that he was the last player in the squad without any playing time and he needed to get on the pitch to receive a medal if they win.

Oh right. I am probably wrong then and remembered it wrong. Ronaldo was part of the squad (never played) and was part of the celebrations but probably didn’t get a medal for it.

I had a look online and since 1978, every player on a teams winning squad (all 26 in 2022) are given a winners medal. It would seem that even Benzema would get a winners medal if France wins this World Cup because he wasn’t replaced and is still officially part of the squad.

There's a real World Cup 2014 feel on one side of the draw. We have Brazil vs Croatia in one Quarter Final which was the opening match of the 2014 World Cup and we can only hope the Netherlands vs Argentina match is a better spectacle than their semi final 8 years ago. Brazil and the Netherlands played in the game nobody really wants to play in 8 years ago aka the 3rd place playoff and could meet in a semi final next week.

The Netherlands and Argentina, who meet in the first QF of this World Cup, met at this stage of the 1998 World Cup in Marseille. The match was settled by this splendid goal by Dennis Bergkamp.

A decent final 8, pretty good quarter finals coming up.
With all the "upsets" during the group stages we're still left with a pretty solid final 8, with Morocco being the only interloper (and they won't make the semi finals).
Of the 8, there are two nations who have never won a WC who might have a serious claim on it this time round, and that's Portugal and the Netherlands (the former being more likely).
But even they are regularly part of the big boys club, so either one winning would not come as a total shock.

Every team left sort of has a really nice story to it.

Netherlands have never won a World Cup and can they finally break through.
England with the whole football's coming home and can they finally climb back to the top of international football.
Argentina, Messi's last chance to crown the GOAT with the games biggest trophy.
Portugal, Messi's great rival Ronaldo's last chance also, can he improve his own GOAT claim by winning a World Cup.
Brazil, in the light of Pele's poor health, can they win it all for him.
Morocco the ultimate underdog story, coming from nowhere to win the world biggest prize.
France, can Mbappe lead his nation to back to back titles and be the passing of the torch from Messi and Ronaldo to Mbappe.
Croatia, can they find redemption from four years ago in an incredible run to the final that came up short.

Which will come to fruition.
