Man Hayes butchered it tonight looked fumbly every time he went near or got the got the ball, then when he did get it he kicked it straight down the throats of the opposition. His possessions count for nothing in my eyes as they were ineffective.
Disappointing loss. Was really hoping the crows would do us a favour today and beat the pies. Was very nice to see the tigers lose!
I wouldn’t say we got outclassed today. It’s was just the pressure that got to us. We didn’t get into our systems or flow.
Kicking wasn’t great again and our shots at goal were way down, never a good sign.
If we can nail our wings and get some quality there we will be a very dangerous side.
100% Correct we are missing high quality possession/speed on the outside we get this right we'll be playing in the GF sooner than later.

I've always said we should try Cerra/Walsh/Saad/Docherty/Williams on the wing just to see what better ball use and speed outside could bring but with so many injuries and these players playing great footy in other positions we may need to recruit or transform someone into this type of Wingman.

Probably the biggest game of their careers for 18 of our 22.

Wouldn't rank in the top 50 for 18 of Geelong's 22.

Up against an experienced, wily team who brought the heat and pressure. Our boys didn't cope.

Good opportunity to take stock of what's required against the best sides.

Zac Fisher is turning into a very nice footballer
Made a difference at times. Was clean while others were fumbling, executed a couple of nice long passes.

Seeing him emerge as a really solid footballer who can rotate through a couple of positions. He will keep improving as we do.

I wouldn't take a 30 point loss from anyone before the season ......

We were always going to cop some losses this year.

We weren’t disgraced at all and broke even in general play, but Geelong are a better side, really well drilled, and it showed.

lol, watch us sh*t our pants in the finals ;)
You guys are much better placed this year IMO.

Such a dangerous forwardline and so even across the field.

Sam DeKoning has also been a revelation and if not for an incredible debut season from Daicos really should be competing for the RS.

I’d be very excited if I was a Cats supporter.

Too many unforced errors..simple. The kicking was awful. We have a habit of going through patches in games with just poor errors but 2nite it just occurred continuously. The game plan still needs working on( expected as not even 1 yr in)..need continuity _ f we r due some luck with injuries and just experience in playing in big games and playing with expectations. All this hopefully see us reduce our error rate rite down..cause sorry but u aint winning consecutive finals if u keep letting the opponent off the hook and giving them the ball back. We r a work in progress. As Voss keeps saying its a transitional yr..I of course would loved 2 b proved wrong but i suspect this sept may just be a tad early.

  • Season is wearing us down. Last 2 months, win one, lose one is clear
  • Harry can’t string together 4 quarters... besides his mental demons at kicking a drop punt he has others he needs to reflect on, else he won’t become what he could
  • Like Ratten era, we just cant take that step into cementing a top 4... the last few years of no finals and Teague, Bolton, Mick still linger
  • Beside Walsh, leadership team (inc Doc) were poor today
  • Smart coaches have figured us out we need to find some new avenues
  • Not all bad, this is the kind of game where Zac Guthrie could’ve had 30 possessions and kicked 3 goals from defence.

Tonight’s game highlighted the obvious difference in maturity, hardness disciplined and quality between opposing teams.we are the younger immature & still missing a few quality players to finish the puzzle.
Under our new coach we’ve made huge inroads in 2022 , on and off field, but we have away to go.
In the next 2 / 3 years, will be very exciting and bring us the opportunity at 17 Cup.

We do not handle expectations well. Never have.
We look like millionaires right now but give it another month and you will see a drop off.

It’d be hard to trust the Cats given the way things have panned out in finals over the past decade, but from the outside the Cats look like the team to beat.

You guys will improve again with Tom Stewart back controlling things in the back half although Mitch Duncan has taken on a lot of responsibility and the move to HB has been pretty inspired.

I thought it was a great game to learn from.

Geelong did their homework much better than we did and it showed. The midfield matchups were on point for them. I think our setups were typical while theirs had a purpose. Blicavs on Cripps was a great move. Strong, better runner and better overhead negated everything Cripps could normally do to smaller mids. Particularly outlet marking.

I thought TDK while fierce was negated by Stanley. I thought we could have a win there but mostly it was unreliable taps throughout game giving us no adv. Especially when TDK has both a height and jump advantage.

I really thought they lessened the. Impact of our key players through great matchups and instructions on their behalf. Hewet and Docherty fair impact but not great impact. Others too.

I think it was Cameron ling who said their mature age and physical bodies could take instruction even in the heat of the battle. I think that was true. Their side has a decent transition strategy and defensive strategy that suits. This has been something missing from their line up Previously. The change to use Hawkins a decoy and keep Weitering out and expose Young was again very smart.

Make no mistake. We tried on an equal footing but got throttled. It doesn’t mean we couldn’t beat them in future though. They were just great as they strangled us through great choice on matchups and just uncompromising footy. We just were a bit off matching that commitment.

The concentration bit cost us too with Docherty and Silvagni Goals. Even though danger mugged Docherty he still had to be aware of the risk the umpire sees it wrong. Get up and give it back. The no ruck allowing Hawkins an easy goal killed us.

Young got intimidated and went the punch all night. He can outmark anyone and should have marked a few when he had a bit of space. There might have been a goal from a resultant throw in. This contrasts with Sam de Kooning going for marks.

Tough game for Hayes. Geelong were switched on and the implied pressure was huge. Despite his horrible use at times I liked what I saw. He had a physical side to him defensively unlike lob and Cottrell. Yes he gave away a free kick but it was because the tackle was too aggressive when the ball had gone, I like the intent. I think his kicking will improve as he gets the pace and poise.

Geelong got all their right players playing well through matchups and strategy. They negated our key players. Bloody awesome from their coaching group I say.

We can reverse it if our coaching team go away and learn themselves and not put this one just on individual players.

Does anybody know how Gov and Pitto went today?

Durdin needs a spell, Cottrell, Hayes, Newnes not in our best 22.

I’d bring O’Brien back for Cotters, if Owies is fit then he comes in for Durds and I’d bring Pitto and Gov in and get them finals ready. We are going to need them if we’re going to have a crack.

Didn't get to watch the whole game but here are the stats:

Pittonet: 15 disposals (2 kicks, 13 handballs), 2 marks, 2 tackles, 22 hitouts, 9 clearances
McGovern: 17 disposals (11 kicks, 6 handballs), 4 marks, 2 tackles, 1 goal

Lots to learn from tonight's game. Geelong pressure as well as their implied pressure killed us. We butchered the ball all over the park, including our forward 50 entries, then they carved us up on the rebound. This was made even worse by the fact that we really struggled to stick our tackles. They're a very good team with a balanced, experienced list and that definitely showed tonight.

We only played about 15 minutes of good footy and lost by 30..it could have easily been worse.

I've only read a couple of pages (can't stand autopsy threads after a loss) so apologies if someone has already said it, but tonight we got a glimpse of what a weapon TDK is going to be. Thy is so right when he talks about the obvious impact of being mentored by Kreuz.

Tom's follow-up work and even his ability to manoeuvre in tight spaces tonight was a sight to behold. When he has the strength to match his frame, and full confidence in his obvious talent, he'll be nigh on unstoppable ... can't wait.

Wow glass half full there !.... Geelong have owned us for the best part of 20 years. In that time we have gone through 2 rebuilds and judging by tonight's game we can still barely lay a glove on them. We haven't even demonstrated that we are a finals worthy team let alone any thoughts of # 17.

This.

We were outplayed and many wounds were self inflicted. But FMD that third quarter performance from the maggs was terrible.

I didn`t see the game to judge the umps, but I believe that this season has to be the most over-umpired season that has ever occurred and that idiot Brad Scott has a lot to answer for, as I feel the footy public has had a gutful of all the re-jigging of the rules each year and for what, as the game hasn`t become a better spectacle it has just become more pedantic with the umpires just waiting like traffic cops to book players for moving a body part on the mark, while missing the "ordinary" sort of free kicks that have been around since Aussie rules started 150 years ago!!! On the Slobbo 360 show they played some very late in the last quarter footage from the G.C. V Col game and the umpire nearest the action missed three G.C. free kicks and then gave a really soft free to Col which was the least of the four frees, and Slobbo was going ballistic (just for a change!) as one blatant free against Ginnivan (yes, him again!) for actually chopping Touk Millers legs from under him was completely ignored, and this was exactly why the original sliding rule was introduced, but the ump had other ideas and let it go and then paid the free to Col.....hmnn no wonder they have won 7 games by under 2 goals this season. The more rules they "tweak" or introduce the less they seem to concentrate on the basic ones, and it`s really ironic that Brad Scott was the guy who particularly went on about the dissent rule when he and his brother used to really give it to the umps big time when they played for the Lions!!! Please allow the game to be more instinctive like it used to be AFL, and the umps should be brave enough to have a feel for what`s going on in a game instead of acting like robots......

This was a great test and we know where we are at with the team which will finish on top (given their easier remaining draw and current form)

The Cats were well drilled in knowing how we carry the ball and stopped us at about the third part of the chain and smothered it there or intercepted it cleanly - our Plan B movement didn’t work too well either. We will need to be ready with different structures and be able to adjust against such opponents. We don’t need to unveil those new ideas in the next few rounds but have them ready in bursts when we need it in the big games including finals.

One thing Voss and the team have showed is they can learn things week to week within the season and get better and better. Whether we can learn enough to finish the season with 8 consecutive wins remains to be seen but it’s still possible.

The top 8 is made up of 2 tiers and we are 5 goals behind the top tier of Geelong and Melbourne. The rest of the 8 we can match it with on our day. But Geelong are just so seasoned for clashes like this at this time of year and it really showed. Still some interesting selection decisions costing us out there today. Hayes blindly turning it over coming in for O'Brien was odd. Somehow we have to find a way to have one or both of Dow or Setterfield in the side, they continually rack up 30-40 touches hitting the scoreboard in the twos.

Between now and finals
Outs: Plowman, Hayes, Newnes, Motlop, Newnes/Cottrell
Ins: McGovern, O'Brien, Pittonet, Owies, Dow/Setterfield

No, blues not same level as Cats, next year i think. should make the 8.
Us coming off a six day break from Perth, Geelong playing three days before us would have been rested before we played our game last week.
I think if the roles were reversed when cinsidering half their side is over thirty, the result reverses.

They were simply too good. We’re still within 5 goals of the premiership favourites so we’re close but not there yet. We’re just simply not a top 4 side and that’s shown tonight.

Disappointed but ultimately know we’ll be better for tonight’s game (it was a taste of final’s intensity).

Evident that our bottom-6 players tonight are not at top-4 standards:
Plowman
Stocker
Newman
Hayes
Newnes
Cottrell

Would be swapping them for these 6 players ASAP:
Setterfield
McGovern
Owies (if right)
Martin (if right)
Setterfield
Pittonet
Thought Stocker was ok, need a small aggressive defender.

1 Setterfield is too much and 2 Setterfields is just crazy.....🙈😂
