Perhaps then it's as simple as using TDK as that second forward.

Pitto in the ruck.
HF: Fisher, TDK, Martin(?)
FF: Durdin, McKay, Curnow

JSOS as the bench option to provide a third forward target when TDK is doing his 20-30% ruck allocation.

Would in turn mean that rather than drafting or trading for a fwd/ruck, we look at a mature ruck as depth while Mirkov is still developing. Someone like Jordon Sweet or Lloyd Meek - lure them over on the promise of essentially being second in line for the ruck spot to Pittonet.

Certainly an option and in part we seem to agree that we need to add talls to the list right throughout the spine
My best 22 forward set up with Fish on a wing is:

Honey, Curnow, Martin
SOS, McKay, Durdin

Honey and Martin capable in air and on ground makes it challenging match ups for every team in the league

We can still add a 2nd KPF/ruckman to that line up as the 7th cog

Hilarious reading the number of posts expecting us to just pick a KPD to replace weitering.
Do people realise how crazy optimistic it sounds, expecting to pluck a diamond out of the overlooked players, that are somehow going to be selected by us at pick 13,and come in and replace any of our key defenders. Lunacy

Not wanting to pluck a diamond. Just the next Wilkie, Collins or Stewart, all of whom were overlooked for multiple years as key defenders.

If you need to pluck a position for a mature-age player, key back is one of the easier ones.

I don't believe anyone is suggesting that the mid-season draft is going to find a key position defender at Weitering's level, that is a mis-intrepretation by yourself.
What pretty much all posters have indicated is that our key position stocks right now are so thin, that we need to find someone to fill a gap for the next 6-8 weeks and hopefully that player will provide ongoing insurance, and who knows that player may turn out better than anyone expected.

Our structures and other players are going to be impacted by the failure to find someone to at least provide some structure and enable us not to fall away in performance over the next month.

I don't recall seeing any posters thinking we are replacing JW.

We're picking a KPD because if LY goes down we have none.

Yep but what is Carrigan going to add to our team at the moment? This is annoying, so if we dont choose the KPP that will help us try and stay in the 8 this year, then what’s the point?

We need to make the 8 this year, and we need players ready now.

This is what the mid season draft is for, to add players that will help in the second half of the year to assist us in making finals.

Bad mentality if we go for Carrigan right now. He is tiny. Wont play in the AFL this year.

That is one use for the MSD, but it's certainly not the only one.

I'd like us to get both Durdin and Ballenden, but if the later gets snapped up earlier then there's not much else in the way of ready-to-go KPP options who could come in and actually have a noticeable impact on our fortunes this year. Next greatest area of need is the wing, where we have some capable options playing seniors at the moment, but could certainly draft a specialist in that role with a view to having them locked into the senior side by the end of 2023.

A new regime but our draft picks seemingly are always telecast in advance.
Even C.Durdin was forecast with our heavy interest.

Not just us. Journo's don't just get info from clubs themselves, wouldn't be hard for them to ring around some of the more likely MSD candidates and politely ask them which clubs have shown a bit of interest.

I hold the view that Durdin will retain his position in our backline even once Weitering returns.

I agree. We started the season with Weitering, McDonald and McGovern, which worked brilliantly.

As mentioned above, similar to what the Demons and Lions are running with at the moment. Think Astbury, Grimes and Rance/Balta.

A taller, stronger type to play a purely negating role (Durdin), and two more mobile talls with intercept ability (Weitering, Gov/Young/Marchy), seems to be the way football is going. Weitering is currently being wasted in that negating role imo.

Why does he have to add to the team at the moment? Why can't we select one player for what they will add now, and one for what we think they may be able to add in the future?

We need to make the 8 this year, and we need players ready now.
Why are we more likely to make the 8 if we select Ballenden than we are if we select Carrigan?

This is what the mid season draft is for, to add players that will help in the second half of the year to assist us in making finals.
That's one reason. It's clearly not the only reason. I wonder if you've paid any attention at all to the past few mid season drafts, because clearly there have been many examples of clubs picking players for the future rather than for what they can add immediately.

He doesn't have to in order to have been a good pick. Having spent a fair amount of the past two years out injured, if he performs strongly over the second half of the season it would be a great pick as we're ahead of the curve.

The bad mentality is writing off a player because they don't fit your ideal.

it would be pretty funny if we take a small fwd and a half back flanker tonight 🤣

aside from our tall needs, which we will draft for, its a great chance for recruiters to pick someone who they might think could go top 30-40 in next years draft.
Might be taken out of our hands, lower clubs looking for any KPP to build on next year, and other clubs vying for the eight knowing we're vulnerable strategically could grab the most desirable options.

Expecting to pluck a diamond from the bargain bin, one to replace arguably the best KPP in the comp no less, is of course folly.

BUT this isn't about replacing Weiters with a rookie. This is about list balance. We needed KPP depth before the season started and it's only gotten more urgent since.

Here's our list of KPDs...

Weiters (gun, currently injured)
Young (arguably more of a tall interceptor)
Omac (perennially injured)
Marchbank (perennially injured)
McGovern (failed forward, more of a 3rd tall, perennially injured)
Parks (unproven, developing, more of a third tall, currently injured)

Of those, Weiters and Young are the only ones I am confident will still be on the list in a couple of years. That's not enough.

And for the next 6 weeks, we are looking at this for our tall defenders: Young. List ends.

Plowman, Williamson, Newman and Docherty are our next tallest defenders and will have to play on 2nd key forwards and resting ruckmen...

So 1) This is about the fact that we currently have 1 fit KPP (Young) to select and he's not even proven and 2) we currently only have 2 reliable KPPs on the list (and that's if you include Young as a sure thing).

So a KPD is plugging a short-term AND a long-term need.

Tiny? He's a 191cm wingman.
If we pick up Sam Durdin also, as predicted then we'll be fine for tall's this year. Harry is due back soon, Marchy might play against * and Pitto also not far away.

I can't see other clubs caring about who Carlton might select.

The only way this would impact their thinking would be taking a guy with their 1st pick rather than 2nd, based on who they think will get picked up / slide...

If we go on to win the flag or go deep into the finals this year it won’t be on the back of a player like Ballenden or Durdin. We’ll need McKay, Pittonet and Weitering back in the side.

If the club thinks a player like Carrigan can help us in the future, when our list is actually at its peak, take him.

Carrigan is a smooth mover #10.

This was two years ago now in the intraclub game - and he's since grown a little taller.

Reminds me of being too much like LOB. Left footer, silky skills, light frame. Like to think if we select him, he doesn't mind hard body contact. A speculative pick imo.
