Ok, so why are we going on and on about "intercept" marking then? So an intercept is not a mark ? Just dont get it. Battle takes a heap of marks and he is an "interceptor" all of a sudden. I put an O in that because it sounds more dangerous. Wonder what they would call Gary Dempsey or David Dench
If he's marking opposition kicks, it's an intercepted mark.

If he's marking kicks from a St Kilda player, it's a mark.

If he's marking kicks from Dean Kent, it's a miracle.

Edit: I do believe they are also counting it as an intercept anytime that a player gets the ball from the opposition (grubber kick, handball, hit out possbly?).

The point is that the best intercepting teams are generally the teams sitting up the top of the ladder.

So when recruiting/drafting or picking a side you need to be able to have at least 1 or 2 very good intercepting players.

I honestly don’t get what you are arguing.
Very one sided by relying on one persons article.

Why arent we on top of the ladder then? Are you saying we havent even got 1?

95% of posters are screaming out for mids, mids, mids. The other point is that a few posters in the last 2 years have been waiting for us to recruit a good backman who can take a good mark and nullify an opposition big forward. How is the club going with that then?

A side needs more than 2 good backline players to win a flag. Check out the rucks, midfields and forwards of the last few flag winners. You need to accept that, there is my argument.

Well for 1 it’s two articles and 2 it’s based on statistics that show very strong correlation. Now I don’t know why you’re so angry and against the intercept mark statistic but the strong correlation is a fairly good indicator. Not to mention both Richmond and Melbourne based their gameplans on intercepting.

Also I agree we desperately need a better midfield. But don’t understand why you’re attributing me pointing out that statistically the best teams are also the best intercepting teams, to we don’t need to worry about Recruiting midfielders, just key backs who can mark apparently.

Just disputing the points that you make. It's a forum, if I see something posted that I disagree with then I voice my opinion and most times back it up with fact or use basic knowledge. That article missed a bit and stats can be misleading and twisted to suit that persons argument.. All good

Good time to offer Lendog a contract whilst he is here in Melbourne!
Absolutely and a rider on that contract that he brings the best midfielder he identifies at GWS....he'd have to believe in one or two mids in their younger brigade. I'd trust his judgement ...who cares just what he thinks is best for us and himself of course...well most of all! Oh and apparently any brilliant unsung intercept defenders that might not be able to live without the 'purple' HAYES up there!

The Peking Duk rendition before the Collingwood game was pretty darn good too.
Yeah there has been some pretty amazing renditions of the Old Tune...I think Louis ARMSTONG'S is one of my favorites...but I love to imagine who might play the song at our next great achievement!....Living or not still living but more alive than ever...........

I'd think a HENDRIX performance of 'Oh when the saints' along the lines of Star Spangled Banner ...Yep HENDRIX full genius would take it up a notch I'd say. Maybe SABBATH....(Red, White and BLACK SABBATH) ...I even thought that NWA might do a brilliant Gangsta style hip hop SAINTS theme (Oh when the saints pop a cap in your ase) .... The mind doth froth with possibilities. I would really love to hear Chris BAILEY and the SAINTS do the SAINTS.
It is wonderful that we have a song that lends itself to interpretation a classic standard that extends and transcends any imaginable limitation.

I think most who want another back are keen on a more accountable full back type like Petty to free up Howard for an intercepting CHB role. We have quite a few that are interceptors. Coffield in 2020 was in the top few AFL players for intercepts (7 less than Moore and Harris Andrews) and finished 5th in marks only 8 less than Tom Stewart who lead the whole comp. He was AA quality that year after starting so badly that we all wanted him dropped to the VFL in the first few weeks.

We then went and picked up Highmore who looked like he was his twin but we were playing a more controlled game plan in 2020 and last year tried to adapt to a more chaos style as sides had seemed to work out our game plan last year. To me one of the keys to our improvement is finding a way to utilise those intercepting defenders already on the list.

The Tigers are the kings of chaos and they have always had a few like Vlastuin and Grimes right up the top of marking and intercept stats. Their best years they'd feed it out to Houli who'd break the lines with kicking or run and carry. Hill and Sinclair can do that bit.

Intercepting is simply getting the ball during the process of one opponent getting the ball to another opponent.
Just a form of forced turnover.

Its kind of duh, that if you can get the ball off the opponent you go better.
All the really easy and fun ways of doing it are against the rules.

Did I hear you mention "keepings off" ?

Who are the guys with Blake? Pic two looks like Shannas, Sziller, Leowe, Gwilt and Jesus, but the guy in glasses looks familiar but can't pick him out.

So it's Ralphsmith and Blake on the outside - who's the beardy guy in the middle? He looks familiar but I can't place him, presumably late 80s early 90s?

He honestly should just retire. Free up a list spot for us for the MSD. I feel bad for the guy but c'mon, how long are we going to wait. Should be obvious to him now that his body is finished.
He’s taken a hair cut I don’t see any reason why he’d leave money on the table. He signed on and has tried hard to get his body right but it hasn’t happened. It was a high risk signing and it hasn’t worked out, Imo that’s all on the club he doesn’t owe us anything. Long term injury list frees up a list spot if that’s all people are worried about then put him on that if he can’t get on the park.

Bellchambers made him look scared that night.... probably because he was.
He was called out by the commentators for failing to go back when he should have and another glaring incident where he shirked the contest. I seem to remember not up to afl standard being mentioned about his efforts, he didn’t want to be there that night and it showed. He’s been very good at the swans after finding his mojo over in the west. If he’d played like he currently is we’d have nether traded him and he’d be on very good coin.

Exactly. He trains harder than anyone to get his body right it’s not like he’s out getting smashed every night and rocking up to training hungover. He’s in a similar boat to mccartin in that unfortunate injuries have forced him out of the game, not self inflicted choices

Where do you reckon this Intercept area is?
Is it inside the 50 m line or does it extend? Is there a measurement or rule?
Is it for defenders only?
An e.g Darcy Moore kicks out from the goalsquare & Max King marks (contested) and goes back and kicks a goal , what is the stat for that?

Just asking for a friend.
