Just an FYI, I received a request to remove the members only section of this article. So if anyone is wondering where it's gone, there you go.

I felt bad posting it and fair enough, independent journalism needs members to pay for it. Again I encourage everyone to spend $6 to sign up. Well worth the tiny amount.

It's probably unfair because there aren't many star players in the AFL but he does give the impression that he really could have been a special player but failed to push himself to that level. There were times that we thought he might end up better than Bont because he put together a few weeks of absolute cream football but he seems like he has a bit of a habit of getting to the point where he could be a star and going into coaster mode again. To me he's a valuable player that could have been an elite player.

The reason we loved Lenny and we love Jack Steele are because both didn't let having an adequate skill set hold them back from being top players. They worked harder and jumped out of trenches when the side needed a hero. JB has more natural talent than 90% of AFL players but seems content being a career footballer. He probably contributed to us missing finals by not being fit this year because even his half arsed effort is good enough to help move us forward but you can't help having a niggling disappointment with the way his career has tracked so far.

Seb Ross is probably similar, he looks a bit like his second and third efforts are a bit half arsed and otherwise he's guy who's achieved heaps as an AFL footballer. To me under the Richo/Trout era we had very few stars so guys like Bruce, Billings and Ross were paid more than top players like Bont, Selwood and Danger. They learned that they could come to work, put in just enough effort and get adoration, money and all the other advantages of being a high profile footballer without the pressure of expectation.

Now that others have stepped up past them they are having to learn that hard work is the only way to get back to that spot that they were at. So far Bruce took a year to readjust but is the only one that looks like he put his head down and went forward. Hopefully Billings and Ross have been stung from losing leadership and having their contracts reduced. We can only be better from having those two stung into action with something to prove.

Dunny had his best season because he was in exactly the same spot. One thing that Lethlean and Ratts have vastly improved is the internal expectations on players. The Seb Ross going home from Queensland has been done to death but I think it was symbolic of where he sees football in his life. The club seems to have seen it as him being happy with it being a well paid hobby.
Agree with the majority but I think you’re a bit off with Seb.

Seb came into the AFL system not being overly fit or recognised as a runner. He worked his arse off to become one of the harder workers at the club and finishing high in the 3km time trials during his good years which resulted in winning 2 best and fairests and being our best mid.
He is limited and he doesn’t have the ability or skills that JB has. If he did he’d probably have been an AA calibre player and top line mid like Steele in those good years of his.

I’ll admit He has dropped off the last couple of years but his role has also significantly changed.

The whole leaving QLD thing was fair to me. He had 2 young twins that were only weeks old and another toddler at home with his partner who had no other family support due to the pandemic, without knowing for certain how long he’d be stuck up there.

Everyone was understanding and praised Paddy for taking 2 months off. Even Membrey didn’t cop flack, But yet happy to kick a bloke who needed to go home to support family.
Double standards to me.

As for JB I’m still holding out hope, but each year that passes I lose more faith and am starting to think what he is now is all he’ll ever be.
Hope I’m wrong and he proves me wrong though.

I was surprised they were on BigFooty and honestly wouldn't have known what part of it was the paywalled bit if they didn't reach out. I guess looking at the situation I don't really care too much about mainstream articles but the smaller types we should probably get people over to their site and subscribe for the full content. Not that I had a problem or anything with you posting but the only way I actually knew some of it was paywalled was because of them telling me, otherwise I'd have left it out of simply not knowing.

Great article. I paid the membership to continue reading and look forward to more content! It was refreshing to read his comments on Hill and Rattens handling of the situation. He was given too many chances and with our injection of highly touted youth this year and competition for spots I’d be very disappointed if Hill performs anything like his 2021 season and gutted if rattan backs him in week after week again.

I don’t like the fact he is on a HBF either as he is defensively nonexistent so if he is going to be taking a spot there he’d want to improve Greatly in this area or be moved back to a wing were he has been AA. His fitness was what held him back last season so hopefully not an issue this year

Wilkie will captain this club. Very mature. Smart. Straight to the point. We hit that selection out of the galaxy

Except that Steele is still young and won’t be going anywhere.
He was a brilliant selection though.

On another note - what is your feeling about what is going to happen with the Eagles and Freo? Do you think they will just have to relocate here to begin with, for as long as it takes?
( Hopefully not too long - my son got engaged a month ago and we have no idea when we’ll get to see them 🙁)

i think they're going to get kissed on the dick again...

they'll sacrifice games away so they can have a string of games at home

What did they say about Hanners
Not much. Just that they can't be relying on him to be as regular 22 player. At his age and with his injury history, he's the icing on the cake. But they need to prepare for life after Hanners.

They stupidly said Ryder is our second most important player and there's no one close to becoming AA standard (other than Steele). Never mind Crouch, Marshall and King i guess... If these "experts" keep underestimating our list then I'm glad

Probably the kindest the Purple dickhead has been to us in years.
The thing with these commentators is that none of them bother to know anything and will just form a position on what other commentators have said, usually making them 12 months out of date.
It's positive to hear Billings will be at HF fill time though. If only they'd take the same attitude with Hill bit l fear Ratts is too close to him to institute the hard love necessary.

Headline suggested this would be a rough podcast for us but it's not too bad.
The only real criticism I have is them forgetting Rowan Marshall exists. He is clearly our 2nd best player and arguably our most important player. We were a completely different team last year when he played compared to when he was injured.

I'd also argue that while we don't have the top end talent that some other lists have, the overall quality on our list is deeper than it gets credit for. Obviously we need some of those B graders to take that next step and play at a higher level more regularly, but I also don't we have a 'poor list'.

Interesting to hear we have been looking at Hayes for about 4 years. I wonder what made us finally pull the trigger.

Anyone listen to Barrett on AFL daily this morning?

God some of his takes about the saints are woeful. They had a 6 minute bit on why the saints list is crap but spent about 3 minutes of that on Hanners. Like they state how he hasn't played any games for us but go on like he's playing every game and he's the cause for our woeful year last year.

if he plays he's a luxury and he's an asset to have. But he doesn't. He is far from any of our on field issues. Instead of assessing the "what if he played" why didn't they assess the critical injuri s last year, how we never fielded our best 22 ( hell, even our best 16) once last year. The obvious lack of fitness we had going into the year. There's probably 15 reasons as to why we failed last year.

Hanners is no where near that 15 problems.

We barely had life WITH Hanners!

It's worth remembering that Barrett has little clue about football. Predicted Gold Coast to make the 8 last year and Melbourne to miss.

He's good at getting the "hot off the press" breaking (crap) gossip but his knowledge of football is very limited.
