Yes, I agree with this, but that still doesnt stop a JHF situation does it given he had a hissy fit and wanted out under contract.
Maybe a team option for first rounders to pick up for 1-2 years with an increase to salary bonus.

We need a Mitch Clark style signing to save this dull trading period.
Spot on. When your team goes out in straight sets with some obvious deficiencies all you want is for the list to get better in the off season. Thus far, we've got unders for Jackson, unders for Bedford and are paying overs for Grundy, a guy who doesn't even fix our forward line. 🙄

We have sweet FA and done little to improve our list while losing a truck load of depth.

Those saying we are going to pick up premium players to turn our forward line around and fill these holes from the left over scraps in pre season draft and rookie draft are kidding themselves.

Absolutely cooked off season and we can’t expect much improvement on 2022 with our ins and outs.

All our close competitors have moved mountains to go past us through list improvement while we have sat on our hands. Even Port, Essendon and GWS have gone harder then us and they arnt even in the window.

All we have to show from losing all our depth is 1 pick inside 50

Geelong (Bowes, Henry, Bruhn, Pick 7)
Brisbane (Gunston, Dunkley, Ashcroft)
Collingwood (Mitchell, Mcstay, Fiorini, Hill)
Fremantle (Jackson, Sharp, Corbett)
Richmond (Taranto, Hopper)

Meanwhile we are busy trading our whole 2022 draft hand (33, 43, 53) for a 6 pick upgrade prior to even checking with Collingwood as to if it’s an acceptable trade.

Need to discourage players from doing it somehow. Team options dont mean much if they demand to go home to a state with only two teams.

Pretty simple I'd think, if you ask for a trade under contract you can be traded anywhere the team sees fit.

Players demanding out while under a contract can be traded but aren't eligible to play AFL. That way the mummy's boys can still go home if they are home sick but they miss out on playing football for x number of season(s).

Or you just make rookie contracts the lengths MM suggested (4 for a first, 3 for a second etc) and there is a strict no trade clause in them for the corresponding amount of years. If people want to be drafted you have to see out the first contract. No exceptions. The club has full control. If you cant handle that dont play AFL.

So what gun powerful Key Forward was on the trade tables this year? Mcstay and Gunston not withstanding

Answer the ****ing question, stop ignoring it literally every time asks

It's also insane how much we overrate players when they're traded

Some dees supporters are wrist slashing over Sam Weidman leaving, that's all you need to know lol

(And tbh I want Weids to go well, but it wasn't working here)

They don’t need to be “on the trade table”. We need to court them.

Jackson, Bedford and Weid were not on the “trade table”.

We need to pro actively engage opposition forwards instead of sitting on our hands. Did we talk to Larkey? Did we talk to Logan McDonald? Did we talk to Gieorgiades? Ben King? Ratugalea? Marshall? Ect

1, Yes
2, No, but we bought him a nice bunch of native flowers and foliage, and he sent a thank you note
3, He was busy (Yiayia made galaktaboureko and he had to help with the pastry)

I can't believe theres actually idiots who think we would have got a top 10 pick for Jackson. FREO DIDN'T HAVE ONE. Why the * would they trade up for someone that we have no leverage on lol to actually think we could have got a better deal than we did makes you one hell of a dropkick
Kent is spot on here.

There's so many holes in the AFL trading/free agency system. While we basically don't ever see players go to the draft, the threat is enough to make us accept a deal we think is unders, and then try and convince another club to come on board while we try and improve it.

The international sports - football, rugby union - have simple systems of movement where contracted players are often left to train and not be picked (contracted) rather than being sold for less than their value (football) or allowed to leave to strengthen a rival (rugby). Admittedly, they don't have to factor in a draft.

Could be worse, though - the NRL player movement is a genuine dogs breakfast. Players representing multiple teams in a season has seen numerous examples of players in the last 2 years leaving a team out of finals contention to go to one that is, as effectively a salary dump, and to strengthen a top 4 team. And you have players whose contract ends on 31.10.2023 allowed to negotiate and sign deals for the 2024 season as of 1 November 2022, many of which will be publicly announced up to 16 months before they represent that team. **** that. I'd hate that.

In our case, I still think we try and trade up into the first half a dozen picks in this year's draft. Clearly we've identified somebody we really want (I assume Sheezel, but could be wrong) and we'll back ourselves to get there, even if we pay 'overs' (eg give up 13 and next year's Freo first) as part of it.

Exactly. if you need to pay overs for those guys to improve the list. Do it. We should have the cash with the loss of Jackson to get just about any forward we wanted. All of the players you listed would've made us much better.

I CANNOT BELIEVE we haven't been talking to more key forwards

Find out where they live, find out where they have coffee, bundle them up at their local cafe, look them in the eye and SELL the Demon Spirit to them.

We MUST get proactive and I'd be gutted if Tim Lazy (that's Lamb for all you playing at home) hasn't approached (and I mean AGGRESSIVELY) Larkey, Ben King, Max King, Aaron Naughton, Aaron Cadman, Josh Kennedy (WCE), Joel Amartey, Jye Amiss.

You've got less than 48 hours Tim. G-E-T B-U-S-Y

Maybe we did talk to them, you couldnt possibly know if we did but it does help your sook narrative to assume we didn't.

Look I would think that if this is your dream job you would play anywhere and love it. I mean if say we lived in Nova Scotia and the Carolina Panthers drafted us first, we would be half way done packing and on our way. Even if the Buccs are my team I'd still go.

I might change careers if I had to be a Panthers player.

They do it over in the States in both the NFL(Carolina Panthers e.g.) and the NHL(Winnipeg Jets e.g.)

You make my blood boil. Gee whiz.

Bedford, Daw, Mitch Brown, Rosman, Jackson and Weidemann out is not the end of the Premiership Window.

This has already been well and truly answered. Read the thread.
No it hasn't been answered

Yes they were on the trade table as they wanted to leave, and other clubs like Freo, Essendon and GWS knew that they wanted to leave so they started talking to them.

Saying shit like we should just "get" Zuurhaar and Ben King etc. doesn't count. If they don't want to move, and the clubs don't want them to move , then we're not getting them.

We don't know everything, there's a good chance we have talked to many Key Forwards and good players but they don't want to come to Melbourne whether they like the club they're at or money or whatever.

If it was up to me I'd "get" Charlie Curnow but that's not flipping happening lol

And Danster, the draft and preseasons pickups hasn't happened so you can't complain about the players we have/haven't picked up lol

Take a few deep breaths PJ, you're fine.

I agree on that part though.
