I’m perfectly fine with Ballard. 3rd intercepting tall with enough mobility to roll off his man and impact a contest. Reads the ball well.

He will never be a full lock-down defender type.

It’s Graham (our project lock down defender) that I have reservations about. But if he frees up Ballard to do his thing and doesn’t leak goals himself, then it could work.

I do wonder if Lachie Whitfield or Josh Kelly are put on the trade table end of next year with GWS potentially committing to a rebuild. They could pay some of their salary in exchange for a pick 15-25. Whitfield or Kelly would be great fits for the young Suns.

Adding Josh Kelly’s class to the grunt of Miller, Rowell and Anderson would give the Suns a top 4 midfield imo.
A late first round to early second pick, plus paying some of the salary for either of two of the better outside mids in the competition! You’re joking right?

They might be getting on a bit, but they’re still worth more than that. And if GWS is paying some of their salary, their value in terms of the pick required, goes up.

Josh Kelly certainly not going anywhere, not on his contract. 7-8 years I think the trigger?

Now Lachie is one I have heard rumours about

It’s not 2019 anymore. I still rate Kelly quite highly and agree he’d probably be worth a tad more. Whitfield not so much.

Don't think its been mentioned but mac Andrew has a brother in next years draft. We will probably only take our 3 academy players so for a 2nd year in a row will have a high draft picks brother playing elsewhere.

I'm fine with it too, but I'd like to keep the option of Collins playing as the 3rd tall, a taller Shannon Hurn type, with Ballard full back Mac Andrew center half back. I would like that versatility.

Will we not get a pick before Jed Walter? Even if we have to trade up?

He isn't a top prospect at this point. Has yet to play a nab league game. Will depend on his development this year.

There’s two issues here.

One, if you’re bordering on finals, it’s highly unlikely a team will trade a top 5 pick in this year’s draft to you for your 2023 first round pick and your future first round pick.

Secondly, you’re going to need a shed load of points in this year’s draft and next year’s draft for all your top rated academy kids.

We (Brisbane) managed to get enough points this year, basically because Gold Coast, GWS and Geelong all way over payed us in the pick swap trades we did.

There will be clubs lining up to over pay you with second round picks for your 2023 and 2024 first round draft picks.

But trade out those first round picks to move up in this year’s draft, you are then in a position of trading players for points (which I expect you to do anyway).

On recent form drafting 3 players in is already ample. My guess would be we use our first to trade that player we've been promised or we move it into the following year. Or we may hand it over to Geelong just for fun.

What would people think if we were into Darcy Parish?
Seems to cop a lot of shit from Essendon supporters.
Definitely a different midfielder to Rowell, Miller, Anderson, Hollands etc..
RFA at the end of this year.
Would he be a good target??

Very vanilla, doesn't defend enough. Not sure he would be worth the salary it would take. And Dodo would probably want 3 first's and Rowell and Anderson and King. But he's a good player, so if the price was right maybe.

What else are you selling?

It seems we're in a similar position to Brisbane last year with Walter being rated in the 1-5 range and Rogers being rated in the 11-20 range. However, we also have Read who is possibly a top 30 pick too. So let's just say (hypothetically) we finish 8th this year and every other club in the AFL finishes roughly where they did last year. That gives us approximately 4000 points to play with in this year's draft. Brisbane were required to stump up roughly 3100 points in order to match bids for Ashcroft (2) and Fletcher (11) at the discounted rate so let's just say in this hypothetical both Walter and Rogers are bid on with those exact same picks. Now we've got just 900 points remaining and that equates to the equivalent of pick 21, but with the academy discounted rate applied it becomes pick 17. So assuming Walter and Rogers cost us around 3100 points then as long as Read isn't bid on with a pick in the top 17 then we should net all three academy prospects without having to complete any further trades. Beyond that I don't really see any need to draft other juniors unless we are running low on depth in a specific position but then again there's always free agency for something like that.

We must also consider the 2024 draft class because Caleb Nancarrow and Leo Lombard were named as U16 AAs in the national championships last year and could very well be bid on with first round picks as well. The likelihood of that occurring will become more clear once the 2023 season comes to an end but we don't really have a lot of draft capital to play with due to the fact that you can only trade one year into the future and we will already need those picks for the bidding war of 2024. It's also fair to assume that we may be placed in the top 4 by the time September 2024 rolls around so that's when it starts to get really difficult. I dare say we may have to trade 2025 picks in order to match 2024 academy bids but perhaps the AFL will amend the rules by then and we'll have already had the ability to trade 2025 picks before 2024. Who knows but I know one thing for sure - I want to make sure we draft Walter, Rogers, Read, Nancarrow and Lombard if they all remain as highly rated as they are right now. I'm sick of losing the best juniors from academy like Beams, Zorko, Ashcroft etc who had/will have significant impacts on their club/s. All Gold Coast juniors and none of them ever played for us.

To be fair Beams was drafted prior to us joining the comp, Ashcroft was a father/son selection so can’t really complain about them two. Zorko on the other hand we had as a Zone Selection and traded him away to Brisbane so that’s just poor List management. So would hardly say we have lost good Gold Coast juniors. Same could be said about Nick Riewoldt being a suns player.

Besides Jack Bowes our academy is only starting to bear fruit in the last 3 years of our 12 year existence so it’s all about getting it right moving forward which I believe we are doing.

Ummmm. 😮

Yes, I realize Suns are not your favourite team. I had to chuckle when Lions supporter suggested that in 2023 Lions will hopefully smash a team by 150 points and you pleaded to be Suns. But common, give us a chance.

It can happen. I am sure you still remember Lions jumping from 18 to 15 to 2 in 2017-19. Nobody including Lions fans expected Lions ending up 2nd on ladder in 2019. Suns will have a good list profile in 2024, a lot of young players entering prime. Just need Lions dream injuries runs from Fagan's early years.

IMO, Suns do have a shot at finals in 2023. Surely, fans can dream of top 4 in 2024. Just like Lions fans can dream of winning it all in next couple of years (justifiably, IMO).

The Lions and Suns should be almost allies really. Anything that grows AFL in Queensland benefits them both.

I get that the AFL love their local rivalries, and that's fine on field, but the clubs should work together as much as possible.

I think briztoon alluded to the Suns giving them overs to help with points. Given we need points this year, and both clubs will next year maybe they will look to help each other.

I didn’t plead. But yes, I said I would like it be the Suns.

We didn’t jump in to the top four off the back of internal development of our youngsters.

We jumped up (and no, none of us were expecting it) because we traded in Neale, Lyons, McCarthy and Adams, and had Hodge directing our defence. And had added Cameron the year before.

I believe the Suns are coming (which is why I nominated the Suns for the thumping), but it IS on the back of internal development of your youngsters, and that is a slower burn, than adding 3 or 4 players at their peak.

We don’t have any points in this year’s draft, and will be looking for our own points next year.

I’m a parochial Queenslander, and will defend the Suns in some quarters. But we’re rivals for the same cup.

I believe the Suns probably have the best academy going at the moment, and a lot of that has to do with the off field running of your academy.

I don’t particularly rate your list management team, and still massively question Dew as a head coach.

I possibly used wrong word as English is not my first language :) I am sorry if that's the case. But I am pretty sure that beside Collingwood you said, "Please be it Suns too". I thought it was funny.

I did not go into reasons of Lions jumping up the ladder but beside great additions, I would add no injuries as another reason for sure.

I was just a bit surprised by your "ummm" comment regarding Suns 2024 prediction comment. You better not take away our hope :p

As far as Dew, let's see how we go next 1-2 years. FWIW, I probably value Dew coaching skills more than Fagan's who is obviously a great people person, but I have how some doubts about his coaching abilities.

I wouldn't spend much energy worrying about offending a Brisbane supporter
Especially this guy who has somehow managed to continue his Suns hate posting here by masking it in pseudo neutral sports talk
