I wonder how much next year's academy crop factors into this decision. Obviously we have the current VFL leading goalkicker in Burgess, Walter and Read can both play as tall forwards, we've still got Day and most likely Casboult now that King is back and even Jeffrey can even play as a makeshift tall forward if necessary. Seems like a lot of tall forward depth if King, Chol and Luko stay healthy in the 1s.

Maybe McLaughlin has a specific skillset that we're lacking? I know Corbett was fairly unique in that sense with his contested marking and endurance. That would be my guess.
Burgess prob VFL quality, Casboult and Day are over 30
McLaughlin bridges the gap between Walter/King and the aging forwards.

This here is a good skill set.

"his running ability, height and marking make him a difficult match-up and a potential AFL player"

Add nancarrow the following year and it does seem a bit more than required. It is nice to have some depth in the key forward stocks though.

Perhaps but is McLaughlin even going to get a look in ahead of guys like Lukosius and Jeffrey?

I suspect Walter is going to find his way into our best 22 forward line pretty quickly and that is going force someone out. Don't get me wrong, it's a good problem to have this much depth but I can't help but think a few talented players are going to miss out and will leave the club as a result. Burgess couldn't get a look in last year with Casboult and Chol both performing well for most of the season so I'm not sure how McLaughlin will find a way. Happy to be proven wrong though.

Great point but I have a feeling the plan is to turn Nancarrow into an athletic ruckman ala Paddy Ryder. We've got an enormous amount of tall forward depth now and I think with Wittsy getting on it's probably time to replenish the ruck stocks.

Lot of hypotheticals getting thrown around. If the club believe McLaughlin is good enough, that's enough for me.
Walter is also no guarantee. Harry Lemmey was a top 3 pick at this stage last year. Look how far he slide.
Lemmy slid because there’s off field stuff going on with his family, nothing untoward, but it affected him, as it would any teenager (so I’m told).

From an outside perspective, McLaughlin is purely there as depth, break glass if needed, injury insurance.

Every club needs a few of those players on a list, and they are eventually delisted after a few seasons, with maybe nothing to show for it.

As something could affect Walter. Counting kids a year out from the draft as collected talent is just stupid and I hate how often it gets done on this board.

Exactly, better a mature guy that will maybe play a game or two than some skinny 18 yo beanpole that gets monstered. Bit like Titsass and Constable.

Worst outcome is a decent VFL player who gets delisted at the end of the year

Kids get hyped every year, not just on here.

Some kids are hyped from when they’re 15/16. The hype around Rankine was insane.

Personally, I believe Walter has been somewhat over hyped on here, compared to how he’s viewed amongst the dedicated draft watchers.

I believe if you asked on the draft boards, very few (outside of davo) have him in their top 5 prospects. Most probably don’t even have him as the top KPP.

This is great news, the lower the bid the better.

As a key forward he could also sky rocket with some strong performances this year (cadman) good key forwards are hard to find and if there is a team in the bottom few that are desperate for a forward they may roll the dice. A team like North have loaded up with mids the last few years would love a good key forward. Time will tell but I'm keen to see him in suns colours either way.

Other teams will know the Suns are taking him no matter what, so he will get hyped up during the year. Then they can justify bidding on him early.

I don't have a problem with that either, teams should bid early, it's supposed to be a competition.

Not sure I follow your logic. Twomey did not name the order. Just top 10 candidates in his book for next year draft. Easy to find the article.
That's cause you're not an Aussie, mate.....5555555. ;)
I'll try and explain...
1-10 is obviously top 10.
If a player really catches your eye he'll be in the top 2 or top 3 or top 5 but if someone says a player is top 10, then that usually means he's not rated in the top 5, otherwise he would have said so........that's how I read it....hope that helps

Not really.

Twomey did not talk specifically about Walter. He just named 10 players that he considers top 10 candidates in next year draft with no order. Not sure how you derive from it that Twomey has Walter 6-10. IMO, with most players it's a bit early to speculate who will be top 5 or just 6-10. Yes, people go crazy about Reid - top 1 pick candidate in about everybody's book at the moment. Yes, so called draft experts on draft boards put up their order, their opinions. Personally, I would go with Twomey and did not claim who will be top 5. Way too early. FWIW, Walter could kill it next year and become top 3 or drop out of first round if he has a miserable season.

By the way, I am an Aussie. At least, that's what my citizenship says.

Sorry mate, didn't mean to offend you.....

It looks like Brett Hodgson (usually reliable source) on FB got a new info. Hopefully, it's Noah. Anybody else with inside info? I hope it's not a new stadium sponsor.

Good luck to McLaughlin but would much preferred we added depth to our key defenders.
I guess after Collins and Ballard we got Graham, and developing Andrew, Brock. We signed up Stein as a depth, but the secret weapon is Casboult. Mongrel Punt put up some interesting numbers when Casboult played in defence in 2019 for Blues. I could definitely see Casboult play in defence if we get injuries. I don't believe we will play King, Chol, Casboult, Luko, Jeffrey all together if healthy.

A little birdie told me there is definite consideration for Casboult to go back and free Ballard up to be the intercept mark etc. Casboult not a bad mark as well.
