Same rule applies to this thread as other years, keep it on topic about the kids.
Don’t get bogged down on what other teams might do or where they will finish.

Trade speculation belongs here.

That's also where you can discuss your mock drafts or pick trades.

Any McCabe, Dear or Maginness talk belongs here.

"If the Roos overlook Curtin, Hawthorn will then consider taking him or exciting Eastern Ranges small forward Nick Watson, who kicked a competition-high 14 goals for Vic Metro at this year’s national carnival.
Curtin, a 197cm prospect who won WA’s MVP award this year, was one of several prospects interviewed by the Hawks last week. But Watson has been heavily linked to Hawthorn’s selection for a while."

"The other Pick 7 trade watch surrounds Hawthorn, with sources of the opinion the Hawks are eyeing a way to get a second pick to select another player they like inside the top 10 after taking Watson."
"In one scenario put to foxfooty.com.au, North Melbourne could send its future first-round pick, as well as a couple of their selections in the teens – the Roos currently hold Picks 15, 17 and 18 – to the Giants, which would see Pick 7/Curtin land at Arden St..."

So they could end up with Curtin, McKercher and Duursma. That would be canny trading thanks to the AFL charity fund.

I'm clinging to a forlorn hope that all the talk about AC's love affair with Curts is true and they select him, leaving us either Duursma or McKercher.

If it's Duursma we can forget Wiz or Curtin straight out. If it's McKercher there might be some debate in the room I'm guessing.

Watson seems like the choice. How do we rate him? Given he's pick 5 do we see him as a superior player to someone like Kozzie Pickett? Charlie Cameron? Luke Breust?

Top 5 pick for a forward pocket - he'd want to be as good as those players. We are in unprecedented territory here given his size + his position. Having said that he sure looks talented enough to be, though I don't think he'll ever be able to chase, pressure and tackle like those three.

Absolute bonkers haul.

I'm one of the few that enjoy the 5 minute break between each pick.

These boys have been working towards being drafted for years, and most will be in attendance with family and friends tonight. The least we can do is give them 5 minutes to soak it in, go up on stage to collect their jumper and have a chat to the media. Maybe 10 minutes would be better. :p

Yeah I agree. Same goes for Shifter waxing lyrical about every kid, even the ones picked in the 4th round.

People moan about him every year but he is only being positive. These are teenagers enjoying the biggest nights of the lives with their families, they dont want to hear Sheehan summarise them with 'this guy is a bit of a spud'.

Some people just like to whinge.

Just on this, and by my own admission not the most reliable source so take with a pinch of salt, but apparently the Duurmsa family are expecting him to go to Hawthorn.

Thought it would be worth mentioning considering the hype Watson is getting in this thread.

Absolute bonkers haul.
Personally, I prefer Curtin at Pick #4 since he can play in a position that we need filling, has good leadership skills from what I have read and has the versatility of a Hodge/Burgoyne. I can't see GWS saying no if they are offered this deal since North's F1 could be #1 or #2. It would be funny to see Clarko do the melts if we took Curtin.

"Melbourne, which holds Pick 6, also has a strong interest in Watson and even attempted to move up the draft order to get him, offering the Hawks Pick 6 and a future first-rounder in exchange for Pick 4. That offer is still on the table, but hasn’t persuaded the Hawks yet — which has rival clubs thinking the Hawks are more likely to pick Watson over Curtin because if they slid back to Pick 6, Curtin would highly likely still be on the board."

"The other Pick 7 trade watch surrounds Hawthorn, with sources of the opinion the Hawks are eyeing a way to get a second pick to select another player they like inside the top 10 after taking Watson."

As well as interviewing Curtin last week, the Hawks also caught up with Murray Bushrangers defender Connor O’Sullivan, as well as Dandenong Stringrays gun Harry DeMattia. Could the Hawks aim to trade back in and get Curtin or O’Sullivan at the Giants’ pick before matching a bid on Will McCabe later in the first round? Or could they even make a play for DeMattia later in the first round?
surely we are keeping our future first for B Smith next year ?

If the Kangaroos are dumb enough to do that there's not enough compensation picks in the world to fix em.

Trading a top two pick AND multiple late firsts for pick 8 would be the most lopsided deal in AFL history even taking into account the Bowes deal.

The article also suggests we are looking to trade up but if the eagles and kangaroos both have future 1st on the table for that giants pick we have no chance of competing with those offers.

can someone please help me understand the academy rules ? I thought something was brought in a few years back that meant a club couldn't match academy bids before pick 40 ? yet we are able to get Mccabe, GC Walter etc ? and how are they different to Jiath ? thanks.
The Northern academies like Sydney and Gold Coast are treated like father-sons for pick matching whereas the NGAs have the 40 or later restriction on matching. Jiath is an NGA guy just like Cam McKenzie was the NGA club has to wiat until pick 40 onwards to match.

McCabe is a father son, they can be matched at any point.

Walter is from one of the 4 northern academies, they can be matched at any point.

Jiath is part of the NGA academies, they are mildly racist lip service to the other 14 clubs so they will stop complaining about the ludicrous legup the 4 northern states get. After said northern states cracked the shits when the dogs getting JUH, the afl changed the rules, they can only be matched after pick 40.

The hype over Watson on this board is obvious and Im on board. Hawks have gone pretty safe with the last two top 10 picks so going for someone who can win matches off his own boot is the obvious move for me.

Think Papley. But if Ginni comes on too we have two of them. Its so exciting.

I dont think Curtin is a great fit for Hawthorn.

But if Duursma isn't picked up by North is the consensus that Hawks take him instead? Is he that much better than Watson? Maybe he compliments Moore, Ginni and the big guys better?

I dont know what to root for regarding those two...
I need to come in here as well. If the name Watson hopefully gets read out then we can get excited as we can develop a team that once again has two gun, high-pressure goal kicking small forwards. Rioli and Puopolo they are not, yet- but it will be bloody exciting to find out.

thanks. ok so Northern states have different rules and the other 14 clubs have to follow more strict rules ? Is there a time limit to this ? say 10 years or so after that surely those clubs can be classified established and made to follow the same rules as other clubs ?

Remember the old days of the draft? Everyone sitting around tables in the same room. Call the number out and move on. Good days

"Player number 61756 - Lance Franklin, Perth Football Club"

Now they think they're the NFL
I wonder what almost-Hawk Luke Franklin has been up to since that wonderful day in 2004.

In one scenario put to fooxfooty BY WHO?

Some random on social media?
Someone from North?
The list manager at GWS?
One of their journos making stuff up in the off season?

The absolute dearth of substance in any of this stuff is absolutely ridiculous.

In a nutshell. Northern academies are there to unfairly benefit northern teams in rugby league heartlands. NGAs are there to placate teams in Aussie rules heartlands and serve very little purpose.

Doubt it, given two of those clubs are Brisbane and Sydney who should already be classified as established.
