Same rule applies to this thread as other years, keep it on topic about the kids.
Don’t get bogged down on what other teams might do or where they will finish.

Trade speculation belongs here.

That's also where you can discuss your mock drafts or pick trades.

Any McCabe, Dear or Maginness talk belongs here.

After the 2021 draft Mitchell and Mackenzie declared that a large portion of our next premiership were already on the list.

The plan was for 9 picks inside 30 over 3 seasons, with 2021 included.

Ward
MacDonald
Butler
Mackenzie
Weddle
Pick 4
McCabe

The club also didn't expect Newcombe to come on to elite status the way he did. Day began the rebuild in 2019. Maginness and Seamus Mitchell are also top 30 picks from the previous year's before 2021.

That plan of 9 picks has likely been slightly altered to 7, but could even be 8 if we trade into the first round again this evening.

You need to trust Sam Mitchell on this one. The plan is basically right on track.
Don't get me wrong the plan is going fantastic! I reckon all that is needed is a bit more patience before pressing the accelerator.

If we draft Watson, after getting JG, what does that say about the clubs thoughts on the chances of Butler making the grade?

I like the look of Bennetts (in the limited time I've seen him at VFL level) and he's very raw, but Butler needs to have a massive season if he wants to stay on our list.

I get the desire for Watson, but I gotta say, looking at our defensive options - that's the area of greatest need.

We can do without another small forward this season after drafting JG but having Frost and Blanck as our only 2 genuine Key defending options seems to be a flaw on the list that needs filling asap.

If we get Watson - wonderful - but our next pick NEEDS to be a KPD or we maybe won't progress next year as much as we hope.

I'd honestly be absolutely fine on passing on Watson, and using our picks to shore up our backline for the next 10 years.

I know we are grabbing McCabe and Dear but stocking up on KPD's seems to addressing the biggest list deficit.

We will see very soon!

Mackenzie has an interview with the Nick the Wizard

Mackenzie: We like your talent. We are just a little concerned about your height

Nick: I’m really not that short. I’m taller than most teenagers I know. Do you think I stopped growing in Highschool ?

Mackenzie shakes his head

Nick: what!? Primary ?

Mackenzie: Elementary, my dear Watson

Just a joke. Hope we draft him though. He’s a gun.

Pretty much every year Picks 10-13 turn up some banger players, you can tip your toes in the kiddy pool of finals and bring in an elite player.

2015 - Pick 11 - Milera, Pick 12 - Curnow, Pick - 13 Kennedy
2016 - Pick 11 - Florent, Pick 12 - Simpkin, Pick - 13 Venables
2017 - Pick 11 - Bonar, Pick 12 - Fogarty, Pick - 13 Brander
2018 - Pick 11 - Caldwell, Pick 12 - Butters, Pick - 13 Quaynor
2019 - Pick 11 - Flanders, Pick 12 - Pickett, Pick - 13 Day
2020 - Pick 11 - Pedlar, Pick 12 - Bruhn, Pick - 13 Powell
2021 - Pick 11 - Wanganeen-Milera, Pick 12 - Sinn, Pick - 13 Hobbs
2021 - Pick 11 - Hollands, Pick 12 - Fletcher, Pick - 13 Busslinger

This why people should never hope to lose games.
If you are draft team are banging out Will Day's regularly then for sure. How many of the above would you classify as elite ie All Australian squad material?

It is an absolute disgrace the Suns are about to add a bunch of young talent again and don't have a pick in the top 20. Rubbish ******* system
It is a genuine joke. Should be limited to one player per year, father son or academy, the rest are carte blanche

I like that idea, or at least make it so you need to be matching bids with picks inside the same round, adding a point tax instead of a discount, or a million other ways. Currently it is nothing short of a rort.

Media still pushing the chance of pick trades inside the top 6. Seems unlikely to me.
They say the same every year and it NEVER happens. Much better to go in to every year expecting very little movement and be pleasantly surprised if we see more.

Anything but the way it is now.

I wonder what will be the final straw for the academies? Surely 4 picks in the first 2 rounds will come close with Gold Coast.

That academy is just going to produce more and more players. It'll have to end at some point.

The AFL is desperate for them to play deep into the finals and generate some strong fan following. Truth is, they'd be better off giving them help with their administration more than more high draft picks.
