One thing to notice as well though is the team style. Port has the lowest possession game plan which can make their player's stats look worse than other players.
Same with the Lions as generally having a very low possession game.

I don't value the players on the bench any less.

Bombers fan coming at me and I've got the underrated Langford!

Don't care, you're on the list.

*Looks at ladder,

Essendon 5th.. yep. Fact checks out
Yeah I know the facts check out

But being the 5th on the ladder (equal I might add) doesn't guarantee anything which is why I was laughing at you

the guy sitting 4th in the coaches votes should be starting. Thats probably easier to quantify

yes well picked up.

I usually pop a few multis on port every week and this year has been the absolute Pitts.

our players are racking up lower counts than expected.

this year its all about efficiency. as few touches as possible to get the results, and its working well.

our clearance numbers are very low and very spread out across our team, instead of one or two players dominating and getting a bunch of clearances like in the past we would have sometime like Boak 7 wines 5 lycett 5 in a game and now its very common to see a bunch of port players with 4 clearances.

they're just so much more damaging with the ball now. we don't need a bunch of repeat stoppages to get the ball out and hurt teams.

who Lachy Neale?.

For the record I'm not arguing against him being in the team but him being an automatic starting 18 selection is no given. Although knowing the selection committee they will push him out to a wing on move Trac to a flank

*fifth :D

I would argue he is close to a starter at the moment.. His numbers are close to exceptional, his metres gained would be right up there amongst the best midfielders so wouldn't be against him on a wing in lieu of a genuine wingman (Daicos.J and Martin.N two best this year imho).

Yeah I'm not against him being a starter to be fair.

Has had a massive year, is a bloody impressive ball user too

would be one of the best kicks in the league. Right up there with Bailey Dale, Kane Farrell, Trent McKenzie and Daniel Rich.

Will be a travesty if Gryan Miers isn’t in the squad and surely he’s a chance for a bench spot. Would be miles ahead in our B&F right now.

This is more from the perspective of "picking a real side with 7 genuine forwards" rather than what we will actually get: Petracca and Bontempelli on forward flanks and maybe 4-5 genuine forwards in total.

But anyway this would leave room for 3 tall forwards and 4 smalls/mediums. Combined goals/assists is one of the obvious ones but for your flanker types I think score involvements are important too. An aggregate of average goals/assists/score involvements is a good system (I realise goals and assists make up part of SIs, it just rounds things out better). For non key position forwards (10+ games) this would leave us with aggregates of:

Toby Greene (12.1)
Izac Rankine (9.7)
Kyle Langford (9.4)
Gryan Miers (8.9)
Bayley Fritsch (8.7)
Shai Bolton (8.7) - has played a lot more midfield but is forward flank compatible IMO
Jack Higgins (8.5)
Cody Weightman (8.5)
Tom Papley (8.4)
Charlie Cameron (8.4)
Zac Bailey (8.4)

Daniels and Elliot not too far below.

So if I was picking my 4 small/medium forwards I'd probably go with Greene, Rankine and Langford as the standouts then Bolton (more disposals/positional flexibility/coaches votes). Cameron was way higher on this table previously and is a great pressure forward too - can't be written off but needs to pick up his form again.

Miers has had an excellent year as a creative half forward but realistically needed to have added a dozen more goals to his name as they just won't pick a creator only. But people saying he wouldn't be in the first five squads obviously just haven't watched him play.

It's interesting, he is playing a very specific role very very well. It's a complementary role due to the firepower in the cats forward line.

Stengle made the team last year playing as an important cog in a very powerful forward line, he was the one getting on the end of the chains and kicking the goals, instead of creating them. Was that a better season overall?

But when it comes to the AA team, it has always valued goals as a most important statistic when it comes to the fwds.

Difficult to say but like you said from an AA selector perspective (rightly or wrongly), I think the goals of Stengle would count more than the GAs/SIs of Miers. If we're getting technical, the pockets should be higher for goals - just like back pockets should be high for intercepts and rebound 50s - and the flankers more for SIs. However we all know midfielders are shoved onto the flanks.

Aggregate average goals/assists/SIs for Stengle last year was 9.4. Bolton was 10.1, Greene 9.7, Papley 9.6, Heeney 9.0, Fritsch 8.5 and C.Cameron 8.4. Greene didn't even make the squad! Bolton, Stengle and Heeney got the nod for the final team.
