Wilkie and Sam Taylor the two best defenders this year so far
Those 2, Andrews, Cox and Weitering having great years so far of the Key Defenders. I always think 2 lockdown specialists and one of the intercept/third tall types like Lever or Sicily would be the best for balance. Also think Liam Baker is having a great year. He was incredible the other night vs the Pies.

Ridley is having another great year as well.

Going to miss a few weeks though with AC by the looks of it so probably drop out but his first 3 rounds have been suburb.
Which one? Moorabbin, Chadstone, Oakleigh? :p

Not fussed what anyone has to say about any Saints being not up to the AA team this year EXCEPT FOR

Get Wilkie in there you chuds. Play him on a wing or full forward if you like for all I care, but get that man in the AA side
ross has got all your guys playing 2 steps above their previous level. its nuts

Are we putting Rankine in?

Toby Greene is probably ahead of him if they’re competing for just the one spot

Feel like consistency has been the knock on Rankine, hard to judge a position like small forward off only 3 rounds. It’s very easy for small forwards to go missing I feel if your team isn’t playing well. I think whether or not Rankine gets the nod this season will depend on the competitiveness of the Crows; mids can rack up the ball no matter the form of the team, defenders can still shine if the backline is under the pump but hard for smalls.

I reckon he’ll be competing mainly with Stengle, Toby Greene, Papley, Breust, Charlie Cameron and I’d like to think with the Saints lack of talls at the minute that Butler and Higgins can lift and put their names in contention.

I’d be betting on Stengle being the best small forward this year still, Geelong down, when they find form he’ll show why he got named last year.

All this discussion in here all year on best small forwards and who deserves to get picked… Watch the AA selectors pick 1 small forward in the team and plonk a versatile mix in the other forward pocket.
2nd spot depends on the talent depth in the league

Im ok with them shoehorning a bont type there if the other small forwards arent screaming to be picked

like having a 2nd ruck on the bench, only relevant when you have elites like grundy and gawn in the same year

While I agree with that for the most part, Wilkie has been sensational for years. Was in AA squad last year and think hes playing at his expected form right now.
Kane Cornes just said that they debated long and hard whether to put Wilkie in the team last year. Sounds like he was very close.

Mason Wood would be pencilled in on a wing at the moment.

BOG until he went off injured last night, 3rd-most coaches votes last week, and in the votes in R1 as well.

Continuing on where he left off last year, where he got the 2nd most votes in his last game and looked like winning it off his own boot.

Sucks massively that he’s injured.

He should have been.

Liam Ryan has been very good so far as well.

On current form, who gets in the all Australian squad best 23 for the Saints?

Wood with the 10 coaches votes (despite sitting out the 2nd half of the last quarter), to go with the 3rd-most last week and 1 vote in R1. Actually lined up across HF for a lot of the game, so wouldn’t necessarily have to be wing.

Wilkie with 8, to go with 7 in R1.
how long he injured for tho? unfortunately the AFLCA votes are as much about availability as they are brilliance.

Apparently it’s not as bad as it could have been. Maybe a 2-4 week thing. We’ll find out more tomorrow I imagine.

Typical for him. Every time he starts to really get going he gets injured. 3rd time this has happened since he came to us and it happened at North prior. Can practically set your watch to it.

The Shaun Marsh of footy! 🙁
