Great effort here Dom, but surely our man Dylan Moore is in the side!
He'd be on the bench for me, think the two smalls (Greene/Rankine) are ahead, and he's competing with De Goey, who's been very good and just ahead.

Think he'd be in the squad 100%, and possibly bench so far. His weekend game in a vacuum tho, was worthy!

Dunkley has been good even in there losses harder to get the coaches votes in those games but I think he has a had a very good season so far. Wood on the weekend was enormous one more week of being very good and he is in. St kilda deserve more from ladder position but their even spread of players input is making it hard to pick standout players.

I reckon Calum Wilkie is in at this point. Marshall probably in the conversation.

Starting with the back 3
James Sicily, Brennan Cox, Jack Sinclair

James Sicily - Has started the year in weird fashion, absolutely dominant offensively, been in some tough situations with two beltings to start the year, but still only beaten in 23% of his contests (4.3 a game) which is comparable to some others like Harris Andrews who's started well and is at 23% (4.3 contests a game) from an offensive POV, coming off 18 marks he is averaging a mere, 28 disposals a game (19 kicks) at 77%, 7 rebound 50s, 8.3 intercepts, 4 spoils, 13.3 marks (2 contested, 4 intercept marks), 400 metres gained.

Brennan Cox - An absolute no brainer, been dominant so far in 2023, offensively brilliant, but he is defensively dominant atm, averaging 19 disposals a game with 14 of those being kicks, at 86% with 5 rebound 50s, 7.3 intercepts, 9 marks (1.3 contested and 3 intercept marks), the most impressive part is that he's averaging 9 spoils a game, with 4 1on1s per game, losing only 9.1%.
Intercept defenders are the most valuable in the game. Cox is currently equal 21. In reality, Cox has had one good game.

You left out the no.1 intercept defender. It's a mistake.

Cox is a no brainer, he's been the best defensive defender so far.

9.1% CDLP is ridic. offensively 19 a game with 5 rebound and 7 intercepts is also very good, + 9 spoils.

Lever has been good, but i don't think he's been that good.

10.7 intercepts a game is elite from Lever
18 touches a game is very good, almost 4 rebounds is pretty good, 7 marks and 4.7 intercept marks. (0.7 contested)

but he's been involved with just 2 1on1s per game all year, and he's losing 20% of them.

If he's in the side it's compared to Sicily.

Who.

Is averaging 28 disposals (10 more than Lever 21st in the comp) Lever is 149th.
7 rebounds (3 more than Lever 7th in the comp) Lever is 65th.
8.3 intercepts (2.4 less than Lever, 13th in the comp) Lever is 1st.
13.3 marks (6.3 more than Lever, 1st in the comp) Lever is 34th.

Sicily is at 3.7 intercept marks to 4.7 (1 less a game)

(Can't get comp rankings).

He's winning the ball much more, he's an elite user who is completely dominating with the ball in his hand, taking ground and damaging the opposition, he's winning it back (8.3 intercepts and 3.7 intercept marks), he's rebounding the ball (7 rebounds), he's finding it (13.3 marks & 28 disposals) and he's getting it forward, he's using it well (77% DE and 400 metres gained).

Lever is winning it back (10.7 intercepts, 4.7 intercept marks) but he's just not doing enough rebounding wise, only 4 a game which is 65th in the comp, he's only winning 18 possies a game in comparison (10 less) 149th in the comp, and is 34th for marks with 7.

He'd be next in the defense, but he's not doing as much as either at this stage, he could make it in over Wilkie tho?

Our defenders don't just uselessly chip around like Hawthorn's, so Lever will never get the possessions of Sicily.

Lever never gets the cheap 15 metre kick out from full-back either.

Cox was hopeless against West Coast. Cox's stats are skewed from a 30 disposal/20 mark game in round 1.

I don't care who you leave out, but the best intercept player after 3 rounds is in.

Cox was really good in R1 (7 coaches votes), against a forward line of Cordy, Caminiti and Owens (ie. one of the weakest you’d ever see at AFL level, not much better than VFL standard), and got to pad his stats a lot with all the side-to-side kicking Freo did down back all day, but he hasn’t been in the coaches votes since, and had an incredibly quiet game on the weekend. Just 8 disposals, 2 marks and amazingly, zero intercept possessions.

Squad? Sure. Team? Very much open for debate, I would have thought.

Sicily had 3 times the contested marks than Lever, and no chance he is taking the kpp spot… I get criticism for suggesting Stewart is a kpp so Lever no chance.
He’s been good but I agree bench at best.

No, i don't pick one wood players.

Lever is the best intercept player in the league, but it's 3 games in and it's not by "the length of the flemington straight" it's 2.4 more intercept possessions and 1 intercept mark more than Sicily, who is (3 rebounds, aka more than the intercept disparity) better than Lever, plus the possessions, marks and defending so far in 2023. Sicily is a lock in this side, he's been pretty good defensively despite (two tough losses for Hawthorn) and offensively the best defender overall.

Cox's offensive stats may be skewed, elite round 1, very good round 2 and okay round 3. But he really hasn't been beaten 1on1. 9.1% loss percentage is outrageous.

9 spoils a game is incredible, but ontop of that he's averaging 19 a game with 5 rebounds and 7 intercepts.

Lever would likely be my defender on the bench, but he just isn't on the field.

Cox plays in the team because he's been in my opinion, and statistically backed as the best 1on1 defender so far, 9.1% CDLP is outrageously good, with 4 1on1s per game, which is pretty high.

But he's also been good offensively, 19 a game with 5 rebounds and 7 intercepts.

Sicily has been better defensively than Lever (losing 3% more contests, 23% to 20%, but involved in 4 1on1s a game, compared to 2.)

And obviously as mentioned, wins the ball considerably more, not even close, he's the distributor of the D50 and the general, so 28 touches and 13 marks a game makes sense, intercepting slightly less, but still considerably high, while rebounding the ball and distributing it at an elite level, which Lever doesn't do.

If you wanna look at the best FB, CHB or third key defenders for 2023 with Contested Defensive Loss Percentage.
Cox - 9.1% (3.7 1on1s a game)
Andrews - 23.1% (4.3 1on1s a game)
Sicily - 23% (4.3 1on1s a game)
Weitering - 28.6% (4.7 1on1s a game)
Wilkie - 18.2% (3.7 1on1s a game)
L.Ryan - 16.7% (2 1on1s a game)
Moore - 0% (1.7 1on1s a game)
Lever - 20% (1.7 1on1s a game)

Moore hasn't lost a single 1on1 all season, but is only involved in 2 a game.

Lever has been involved in the same amount (which isn't much) with 2 a game, and has lost 20%.

Luke Ryan has started well in 2023, 29 disposals a game 22 kicks at 86% with 8 rebounds 8 intercepts and 2 1on1s a game losing 16.7%, 10 marks (0.7 cont) and 2.3 intercept marks with 638+ metres gained.

He'd be in the squad, like Lever, who have both been impressive, Lever/Ryan would be last bench spot for defenders, or in the squad.

Everyone else is around 4 1on1s a game, Weitering losing 28% is why he wouldn't be in the squad so far, not the sole reason but he wouldn't be, and this stat shows a reason why.

9.1% is crazy good for almost 4 1on1s a game.
23% is pretty good, especially for Sicily considering they've been belted twice.
18% is very good for Wilkie with almost 4 1on1s a game so far aswell, and has been apart of a super sound St Kilda defense.

-
So in short.

Lever is the best intercept defender, but hasn't been good enough defensively, and he's not doing as much as the others for being able to accumulate, distribute, rebound the footy from defensive 50, being better at just intercepting, isn't enough.

Jack Sinclair - His team's first, and he's been just about their best player. Averaging 28 disposals per game so far, 18 of those kicks at 82%, 5 rebounds a game and 6 intercepts, he hasn't lost a 1on1 yet, but hasn't been in many. 5 marks a game so far, and almost 500 metres gained. But most impressively, 3 bounces per game.

Now with the 3 half backs.

Harry Sheezel, Callum Wilkie, Nick Daicos

Harry Sheezel - He's been dominant so far, he's 3 games in and he's already on track for an All Australian Blazer, can he keep it up? who knows. But so far he's been superb, he's 7th in the AFL for disposals a game, with 30 disposals per game, 19 kicks at 76% which includes 3.5 inside 50s (as a defender) and 8 rebound 50s a game, 6 intercepts, this also includes 8 contested possessions and 4 tackles per game, 8 marks per game and almost 600 metres gained.

Callum Wilkie - Again, just like Sinclair, teams first, and he's been purely dominant as one of their key defenders. He's been just about their best player with Sinclair. Offensively he's been very good, averaging 20 disposals a game, 13 of those kicks at 82%, 3.5 rebound 50s, but 9 intercepts, almost 4 1on1s a game and only losing 18% of them, with 8.3 marks per game (1 contested and 3 intercept marks), 5 spoils. He's been setting up their defense so far in 2023.

Nick Daicos - Probably the first name picked here so far. 2nd in the AFL for disposals, he's been offensively ridiculous. Averaging 33 disposals so far in 2023, with 19 kicks, at 88% DE. 4.3 inside 50s per game and 4 rebound 50s, running the arcs, winning his fair share of ball 7 contested and 6 ground balls (2 clearances), and kicking a goal a game as a defender, averaging a goal assist per game so far, and 8 score involvements off the HBF. 550 metres gained and 2 bounces per game, he's been unbelievably good.

Your back 6.
James Sicily, Brennan Cox, Jack Sinclair
Harry Sheezel, Callum Wilkie, Nick Daicos

Now for the wings, ruck and midfield.
Josh Daicos, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Sam Docherty

Josh Daicos - Playing as an actual wingman, but also inside at times, Josh Daicos is dominant. 27 disposals a game (17 kicks) with 5 inside 50s, and 3 rebound 50s, 11 contested possies, 5 clearances, 1 goal a game, 7 score involvements, and 500 + metres gained. Him and his brother have been an unstoppable duo so far in 2023.

Luke Davies-Uniacke - Been playing as the games best midfielder within the first 3 rounds, missed Round 3, but before that you just have to put him in, only a week missed and he's so good, North 2-0 with him there, averaging 31 disposals a game at 81% DE, which includes 6 inside 50s, 18!! contested possessions, 11 clearances, and 1 goal a game, 2 SHOTS ON GOAL A GAME, 0.5 goal assists and 7 score involvements, almost 6 tackles per game, and upwards of 500 metres gained. ELITE

Sam Docherty - Playing HB, but also some wing, so i can see him getting it here, and he's been great, averaging 28 disposals per game and 20 of those being kicks, 2.3 inside 50s, 5 rebound 50s, 4 intercepts, 1 goal per game, 7 score involvements, 8.3 marks and almost 500 metres gained.

Now for the ruck, ruck rover and rover.

Tim English, Darcy Parish, Tom Green

Tim English - He, is, a, freak. He's averaging 20 disposals a game, 11 kicks, at 74% with 3 inside 50s, 6 intercepts, 10 contested, 4 clearances, 0.3 goals (4.3 score involvements), 26 hitouts per game with around 10 of those being to advantage per game (39.2% hitouts to advantage). 4 tackles, 7.3 marks (2 contested and 3 intercept marks),

Darcy Parish - His numbers are far too dominant to ignore, 34 disposals per game, 18 kicks, 7.3 inside 50s, 13.7 contested, 9.3 clearances, 0.3 goals (0.3 goal assist and 8.3 score involvements), 3 tackles, and 550+ metres gained. Freakish, he's been the best ball winner in 2023, he's getting it inside 50, from clearance and contested situations, and he's involving himself with scoring.

Tom Green - No one will have an issue with this right? he's elite. Averages for 2023, 33 disposals, 16 kicks, at 74% with 5 inside 50s, 12.3 contested, 7 clearances, 7.7 score involvements (0.3 goals), 4 tackles, 5.3 marks and 500+ metres gained.

Team so far!

James Sicily, Brennan Cox, Jack Sinclair
Harry Sheezel, Callum Wilkie, Nick Daicos
Josh Daicos, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Sam Docherty
Tim English, Darcy Parish, Tom Green

Now for the half forwards
Christian Petracca, Jeremy Cameron, Jordan De Goey

Christian Petracca - Superstar, so far in 2023, 29 disposals a game, 16 kicks with 7 inside 50s, 14 contested and 6 clearances, kicking 0.3 goals a game is tough but he's having 1.3 shots on goal, which includes 1.3 goal assists and 7.7 score involvements. 5 tackles, and almost 600 metres gained. You just know he'll get plopped here come AA.

Jeremy Cameron - No doubt the best forward in the game, possibly one of the best players, he's a freak, averaging 19 disposals a game as CHF with 17 kicks, 5 inside 50s, 3.7 goals (1.7 behinds), which is 5.7 shots on goal a game, 8.3 score involvements, 8 marks, 4.3 inside 50 and 425 metres gained, freak.

Jordan De Goey - Again, you just know it's gonna happen, and he's been super to start 2023, a genuine shout. 24 disposals a game, 5.3 inside 50s, 10 contested, 5 clearances, 1.3 goals (1.3 behinds), 3 shots on goal per game, 2 goal assists a game and 8.3 score involvements, 3 tackles a game with almost 6 marks per game and 350+ metres gained.

Now for the full forwardline.
Toby Greene, Charlie Curnow, Izak Rankine

Toby Greene - 14 disposals a game, 3 goals a game (9 total & 5th in the Coleman, 1st for small forwards) it's a no brainer, 3 goals 2 behinds per game (5 shots on goal) with 1 goal assist and 7.7 score involvements per game, 5 marks per game and he's just gotta be here.

Charlie Curnow - Pipping Nick Larkey purely through being able to do more than just kick goals, 13 disposals a game with 3.3 inside 50s, 76% DE, 3.3 goals per game 1.7 behinds, 5 shots on goal, 8.7 score involvements, 5.7 marks, 3.3 inside 50 marks. Been good to start 2023.

Izak Rankine - Last on field position goes to Izak Rankine, who's been great to start 2023. 16 disposals per game, 11 kicks, 3 inside 50s, 3 clearances, 3 goals per game, 2 behinds, with 5 shots on goal per game, 8.7 score involvements, 3 tackles, 4 marks and 3 inside 50 marks. He's been a very damaging inside 50 player in 2023, scary to have him near it.

So the best 18.
James Sicily, Brennan Cox, Jack Sinclair
Harry Sheezel, Callum Wilkie, Nick Daicos
Josh Daicos, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Sam Docherty
Tim English, Darcy Parish, Tom Green
Christian Petracca, Jeremy Cameron, Jordan De Goey
Toby Greene, Charlie Curnow, Izak Rankine

No bench for me so far, but there's a fair few good players who have missed out, and this definitely won't be the team to finish the year.
Thinking about a bench now.

Dylan Moore, Clayton Oliver, Patrick Cripps & Jake Lever make it at this stage!

Luke Ryan might just be the super sub and close to the defender spot

Izak Rankine - Last on field position goes to Izak Rankine, who's been great to start 2023. 16 disposals per game, 11 kicks, 3 inside 50s, 3 clearances, 3 goals per game, 2 behinds, with 5 shots on goal per game, 8.7 score involvements, 3 tackles, 4 marks and 3 inside 50 marks. He's been a very damaging inside 50 player in 2023, scary to have him near it.

So the best 18.
James Sicily, Brennan Cox, Jack Sinclair
Harry Sheezel, Callum Wilkie, Nick Daicos
Josh Daicos, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Sam Docherty
Tim English, Darcy Parish, Tom Green
Christian Petracca, Jeremy Cameron, Jordan De Goey
Toby Greene, Charlie Curnow, Izak Rankine

No bench for me so far, but there's a fair few good players who have missed out, and this definitely won't be the team to finish the year.
An excellent effort, but based too much on stats.

A glaring example is Sam Docherty. Excellent looking numbers on paper, but he hasn’t received a single coaches vote, which suggests that he’s not significantly influencing games of footy. Which is all that really matters.

Mason Wood on the other hand has a unanimous BOG game, where he was enormous when the game was in the balance in particular, a 3rd-most votes game, and another game in the coaches votes, where he kicked 2 last quarter goals, in a close game.

On no planet would Doc be in ahead of Wood right now, with all due respect to him.

Sicily just does useless chippy chip. Most of the time he receives the ball it's a sideways chip to him. Anyone can do that so disposal totals are irrelevant.

Wasn't all based on stats, but explained through it.

Mason Wood was absolutely incredible in Round 3, he had 27 touches with 21 kicks 10 contested 1 goal (2 goal assists and 7 score inv) 11 marks (2 contested) almost 600 metres gained and 6 inside 50s.

Docherty was huge against GWS with 39 touches 22 kicks 7 contested 1 goal (10 score inv) 10 marks 517 metres gained, 4 inside 50s and 3 rebound 50s.

Wood was good in both Rounds 1 and 2.

Docherty was good in Round 1, and pretty good Round 2, while also being dominant in Round 3.

It's splitting hairs, although i don't think they'll pick either (or Josh Daicos) since they'll just put an extra couple mids there.

Danster, you realise "useless chippy chip" isn't a thing, or rarely.

The last players i can genuinely remember doing it, is Jack Ziebell who is dreadful & Jake Lloyd at times, but he was still a very very good player.

You want the ball in the best users hands, for Melbourne it's Salem off HB. (Or, Angus Brayshaw, Steven May.)

For Hawthorn, it's the captain Sicily, (although we have multiple good users who we want the ball in their hands, Scrimshaw is one, but CJ for his run and gun).

The extra 10 disposals is huge, they aren't all sideways ball, or short from kickins, because he roams the D50 and connects the play forward, but even when it is a switch, sideways ball or short into the pocket. It's about getting the ball into the hands of the best users. Sicily is that, it isn't useless because he's getting it from that, it opens the ground when you switch, getting it from Frost to Sicily opens the whole game of possibilities for example, gets to him and he can take it and take the game on, which is also why he averages 3 more rebounds a game than Lever.

Anyone can do it, but teams aren't going sideways and feeding the ball to Sam Frost and wanting him to take that inside kick.

You give it to your best users, Lever isn't that, he's a great intercept player, he reads the play unreal. But he's not close to one of the best users in your D50, he doesn't get the role to rebound, get the pill etc, because he isn't good at it.

Fantastic effort. Dont agree with some picks but hey its round 3 so theres going to be plenty to dissect.

Great reading the summary on each player, not sure why there are dislikes to your post.

I don’t consider it splitting hairs when one of them is 5th in the coaches votes, with 16 votes, while the other hasn’t received a single vote.

Doc would also have spent much more of his time across HB, where it’s easier to rack up the stats, whereas Wood has played a lot more forward, where it’s far more difficult to rack up the big numbers.

As a result, Doc is averaging 5 more disposals per game.

But (season totals, Wood first, Doc 2nd):

Goals: 4-2
Tackles: 10-2
Goal assists: 3-0
Intercepts: 17-12
Disp efficiency: 79%-70%
Inside 50’s: 12-7
Contested poss: 20-11
Contested marks 3-0
1%ers: 6-2
Centre clearances: 2-0
Tackles inside 50: 2-0
Metres gained pg: 503m- 467m
SuperCoach: 116-89

The only stat of any particular importance that Doc is noticeably ahead in is disposals, yet his considerably lower disposal efficiency means that he’s only averaging 1 more effective disposal per game than Mason. Despite winning much less contested ball. So that basically cancels that out.

Yet Mason is considerably ahead in a laundry list of important areas, as noted above.

Hence the 16 coaches votes to 0 and 116 SuperCoach points to 89 per game.

It’s not even close.

Happy to say our opinions are different, i've liked Wood so far, and i've liked Doc so far.

And happy to say your case well and truly makes me think haha, but mine wasn't purely just for stats since i watched all 6 games (3 carlton 3 st kilda) and thought it from that and used stats more so as a backup behind it.

However, this looks really good from Wood's POV, he's been great.

You want the ball in the best users hands, for Melbourne it's Salem off HB. (Or, Angus Brayshaw, Steven May.)
But weird to see this Brayshaw’s name here, his disposal is pretty average I think. That’s probably being generous too actually. Our best user coming outta defence is Bowey I think, Hibbo is surpringly good too. Be interesting to see how Salem fits back in to the side.

Rate Brayshaws usage off HB tbh, he seems like a pretty composed and smart player so he gets the ball in his hands and picks them off.

And i think Melbourne do too since he is usually high up for marks + disposals and they get it into his hands.

Salem is clearly number one when playing, Bowey is good aswell, although think his composure, maturity and experience needs to rise, improve and continue before he starts getting used more, Hibbo i don't rate as highly in these regards. Although good when he needs to be.

All those Cox stats. Really a perfect example that argueing on stats doesn't work with so few games as sample size...

Same for Larkey. His goal average is dropping by 1 each week. Probably will have settled near a realistic average after another month.

2/3 games Cox was (dominant) or very good offensively. What's impressed me most hasn't been that, his defending has been.

Doc has had a few highlight moments which really stand out. His long bombs for goal.

Id probably have Wood ahead for now though. His disposal has been fantastic to watch.

Room for both perhaps.
