Goodes was mentioned by the poster I was replying to. The one missed was Michael Long who captained * in 1999 when * missed most the season.

Funnily enough, only Farmer and Wanganeen captained their side on their own and in their own right.
I re read the comment.

Dunno how I missed it the first time.

Probably till hungover from yesterday.

The whole time under his captaincy we weren’t fit enough. He never set the standard high enough.
I agree with that but there's also this:

Bingo, he's showing some faith in us that he didn't have to and it's time for us to repay that faith and show him the club can be an environment for success.

Said it before and will say it begin, as much as our leaders have been iffy on-field they have hit homeruns off-field to keep the group together. I would not have blamed anyone for wanting out after the hell since Scott left. I'm also surprised we haven't seen more 'broken' players, Melbourne had their fair share from their dark years. Then again we have been turning over the list like madmen... Maybe shitmen aren't just born, some are created.

In primate groups alpha males are leaders that are unscrupulously fair and courageous as well as strong. Leaders who behave like the so xalled alphas in the business world might get rolled by a bunch of other males if the behave the way modern human leaders in business and politics behave.
Its flippantly thrown around. Just be a good campaigner.

I love Jack. Great bloke and legendary footballer. But fukc me his captaincy was ordinary.
I blame the admin under Ben Buckley for this but can't help but notice standards dipped to an all time low.
The years 2017-2022 are simply some of the worst in our history if not equal worst with late 80s and early 90s.

2 captains reeks of an inability to make a hard decision on whom to give it to but at the end of the day who gives a s**t.
Not me. I've often thought it's more a novelty, or an honorary position to be honest. When they're on the ground, there is probably, or should be, about 10-15 captains.

How do the new captains and I suppose the leadership group deal with the Thomas situation?

The ‘good bloke’ defence of Thomas by L.McDonald at one of the pressers he did was a howler.
I suspect Mac wasn't well advised prior to the presser.

not sure how many people knew. The media department putting out social media posts about TT and his new rabbit suggests they had no idea. If they new this was coming they would have kept him away from social media.

Fair question but this has been around for a few months - the club would be well aware there were issues. If they didn't that would be a larger problem.

I miss the character and dependability of Andrew Swallow.

Is there any chance we will ever have a captain who is a good kick of a football?

A Stevens, Swallow, Simpson, Zeibell, Jy, Luke Mac....

Boomer is the only captain we've had this millennium that you could trust with ball in hand. (And yet we retired him & welcomed Hrovat to the club!!! What a total **** up that was).

That kick started the rot..

I’d have thought Cunninton or even Corr were better choices for a couple of seasons. LDU has really come from nowhere this year too. McKay another.

We have options but Simpkin and McDonald just aren’t it.

LDU or McKay.
If we give it to Jy I feel like it’ll just add more pressure to his game.
LDU has so far elevated his game and shown some real resilience.
He also leads by example on field.
You want an elite side? Choose an elite skipper!
50 posters voted for LDU last season.
Sadly no one at the club shared a similar view.
You need a leader who can drive standards on the field as much as off it and say “look at me, this is how we do things.”
Jy isn’t the answer but my god what damage are we doing to our standards internally by having McDonald as captain as well.

This was all seemingly a totally avoidable situation and the club has only itself to blame for the terrible leadership candidates it has at its disposal.

You can’t even trust Clarko and Viney to get these things right ffs

What's the reason LDU doesn't want it? Doesn't consider himself a leader? Introverted? Doesn't want the extra pressure?

Even at their ages if Cheez and Wardlaw wanted to embrace it I'd not be against it because it can't possibly be worse under them than it is now.

Im pretty sure LDU was grieving the loss of his father last year? Probably a bit much on the lad.

just simpkin captain next year? or does he co captain with say LDU or larkey?
Co-captains can f*** right off.

Give it to Jy on his own, but hand a bunch more leadership activities to those coming through behind them.
