Co captains for me like a few others have said

Jy and LDU
If Cunners is fit and ready to go next year, give him the honour.

Let’s see under a new coach and another year or two on who steps up to take it when he finishes up.

These guys walk 10 foot taller when Cunners is around, he deserves to be known as a Captain of this Club, as long as he wants the job.

I can’t see him wanting it

He’d want to just focus on getting back to his best footy without any extra pressure

Plus he wouldn’t want to deal with any of the media

He’s a leadership group type tho

let’s ask ourselves - who would we be worse off without. Jy or LDU?

There you have you answer.
If we extrapolate this logic to, say, West Coast of some years back, I reckon it's a bit flawed. Who was the more important player, Darren Glass or Nic Naitanui? Reckon Naitanui had Glass covered by a country mile. Arguably the most impactful player in the game at the time. Does it mean he made a better skipper? Nope. I'm slowly coming round to the idea of LDU being captain but for now I'm still firmly in the Jy camp. You'd see more moments of clear-cut leadership from Jy in half a season than you would from LDU in a full season imo, and by leadership I don't just mean burrowing into the pack, extracting the ball and breaking clear, because any good midfielder can do that

If he doesn’t want it fair enough, but the best thing about Cunners he doesn’t need to change a thing to lead this club. Him just being himself is more than enough. You can see the players love, respect and just gravitate towards him.

You are right though, the whole media thing might turn him off the role. But if we got Clarko, he wouldn’t need to be front and centre anyway.

If he wanted to, I would love to see the great man lead this club. There would not be one player on that team that wouldn’t give their all for him.

No one really stands out. Let's go in captain-less for a year. Or have it be part of kangalotto? Or coin tosser is the person with their birthday closest to the match day date. Could raffle for 'crowd captains'. Their stern looks and/or point-of-view critiques would be shown to the players on tablets before the coach addressed them.

Trend-setters we should continue to be.

Take the opportunity of having no-one on your list capable of captaining to abolish the antiquated role and make leadership a team thing. They already have a coach and a CEO and a president.

At AFL level captains do nothing but hold up premiership cups or create awkward.

LDU or McKay.
If we give it to Jy I feel like it’ll just add more pressure to his game.
LDU has so far elevated his game and shown some real resilience.
He also leads by example on field.
You want an elite side? Choose an elite skipper!

LDU strikes me as a Pendlebury-type option as captain. Actually, I’m at the point where it seems a no-brainer to me.

Jy's the next captain. LDU might be the better player, but from everything that is said about Jy by people at the club, he's a natural leader.

Jy captain, LDU vice.
Corr, McDonald, Cunners, Anderson & Zurhaar in the leadership group.

I love the man but Jack was also considered a natural leader by the club and 2017-2022 has been some absolute dogshit footy. Some of our worst in 30 years. Not saying he’s solely to blame but if we look at his tenure altogether, history won’t be kind to him. It’s sad and I wish it were different. Once upon a time I thought the Ziebell, Tarrant, Higgins, Cunners, Goldi group was going to take us places in 2018. Took us nowhere. All those blokes are the same age as me too so I wanted to share the romanticism of premiership and finals success with like for like players.
That’s why we need to get the next appointment right. LDU screams follow me and do as I do. Whereas Jy is always going to have flaws and weaknesses in his game and I reckon we need a change up.

Fair call. I haven't seen LDU speak much at all, but he appears to have leadership in spades. If he wants it, give it to him.

LDU or at the very least co captain with jy
Depends on what Cunners wants to do.

I still think Jy but with the leadership group being Jy, Cunners, LDU, BMac, Larkey.

LMac will expect to be in there (and probably will be) but 5 in the group is enough for me.

That new group will represent a major change from this year - as it should.

Honestly not sure Jy will ever be placed in the position of having more pressure on his shoulders than he did this year.

replace Larkey with LMac......problem solved..:thumbsu: Then 2024 bring in Larkey for Cunners and let Cunners just enjoy his footy. His presence around the club will still be there to help with the younger players..

Whilst LDU is on a trajectory to be our best player that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s Captain material. From what I’ve been told he’s only just starting to come out of his shell and finding his voice in team meetings etc. Why burden him with the added responsibility of leading the team? That’s a huge responsibility. By all means get him in the leadership group so he can start developing those skills. I think next year should be about building on the back half of this season and concentrating on being the best footballer he can be.

This is where co captain could benefit

Not all the responsibility on 1 person

Swans do this well

I wouldn't be surprised if our next captain comes from outside our current list.

With Clarkson as coach he may want a more experienced player like Shiel, if he comes across, as captain as he knows what is required under Clarko and knows what is required to be successful.
