Naughton is B+ at best and he is given 8 years? Is there an advantage for clubs tying a player up for this long? My only guess would be they can offer slightly less per year because they’re guaranteeing the money for so long.

When coming up with hypothetical trades, don’t bother throwing in names like Heeney & Mills. These local boys will just not move interstate! Pretty confident (and praying) the same will apply to the likes of Gulden & Campbell 🙏

Agree with this. It seems odd that one of the common complaints is Victorian teams luring players back home and that we need more NSW-born talent, but let’s ship two of the best academy players off for a massive contract that may have a few red flags attached.

I’d like to get Oliver. Sure. No way in hell do I want him at that price, though.

It wasn’t that long ago that contracts >3 years didn’t happen.

I’m struggling to think of any long-term mega deal that’s been successful thus far (the Buddy deal just gets a pass from me) …. but the clangers are mounting.

Naughton is a surprise …. and a big risk. Here’s hoping it turns out to be as successful as a Polec coupled with a hint of Grundy and a smattering of Rory Atkins.

I think big money players on long term contracts can reward the club by agreeing to be paid a total amount over a duration. Allowing the club to adjust the exact amount per year depending on trade market or contract pay outs or list goals etc

If you have a few players like this you can find cap space when you need it easier

Keep it on track young fella....just stirring the pot..")
Nah wasn’t actually having a crack at you mate, could tell u were joking… but others have been throwing up Heeney’s name , and I just can’t see him (& Mills, Gulden, Campbell etc) ever moving interstate, mainly for family reasons, but also out of loyalty to the academy program.

He has played key back

I mentioned him a few months ago

Lions have a outstanding deep defence and Tom does have some talent

Since we do need a key back as a emergency option

Tom does have some highly desirable traits - size speed athletic decent kick
Brisbane's Tom Fullarton, a versatile tall/ruck, is out of contract and has caught rival interest as well. – Callum Twomey

Thoughts on Fullarton? Good size. He’s a forward, but could he be a KPD?

It still annoys me a bit that when we finally get a competent AFL player from Sydney like Heeney we fork out 800-900k.

I thought that once we had some local talent we wouldn't need to pay them that much to keep them at the club.

Look at Geelong. They pay their players peanuts and they stick around.

Do we actually know what Geelong pay and what other under the table investments they can offer to perhaps offset smaller contracts?

Alastair Lynch was looking rocky at the halfway point of his 10 year deal but ended up being very good for all parties.

Why wouldn't the Bulldogs sign an 8 year contract for Naughton? Key forwards don't grow on trees and he'll only be 24 when the new season comes around

Well, a simple one is how do they play all of JUH, Naughton, Croft and Darcy.

If he goes down the pecking order, may be difficult to do anything.

Bird in and and two in the bush and all that however....

Still a few years away before that could become a problem. Only 2 of them have proven AFLA level and one hasn't even been drafted.

Plus Naughton can play defence, Darcy has played forward, defence and ruck or you could find a way JUH runs through the middle like Buddy did in the past or Roughead when playing ruck
