Kicks to advantage. Probably my #1 attribute in draftees.

Even more impressive when you factor in his speed.

Disclaimer: working off highlights only.
I’ve seen this kid play. He’s quick, he tackles, he’s a leader - but he’s a butcher on anything more than 15-20 metres. Don’t rate. Rather that kid Arrow likes who does a lot of the same things but hits long targets.

Good insights - that's the danger of this draft expert working off highlights only

Fair call - I have not seen enough of him to have an informed judgement. Ball butcher is exactly what I don't want.

I don't care if a kid is faster than Usain Bolt and can jump higher than Tim Forsyth. My #1 wishlist never changes; I want a player that retains possession. Combination of kicking/handball skills, footy IQ, game awareness and vision.

Someone like Steele Sidebottom - I swear every time he gets the ball I curse that he's going to use it well. And shortly after he annoyingly confirms my fear.

So I ask my annual question: who are the players that will retain possession? In the backline, someone that will spot a target up field? In the midfield, someone who links up with a free player and up forward, someone who can hit up targets I50?

Here's one I prepared years ago and continue to roll out every year.....

Who are the players that 'retain possession'? It seems pretty straightforward, but to me getting the ball to a teammate is the most underrated skill in footy.

Who cares if you can run, jump or even kick the ball 60m if you are just banging the ball on your boot or kick to a 1-on-1?

There are some players that just have a knack of finding a teammate. The ones who can spot free players, kick to advantage, not give off hospital passes, weight the ball etc. It's more than just kicking skills though, it's decision making, footy IQ, awareness, gameplan adherence.

Cripps gets plaudits for being a superhuman extractor, but it's the fact he shovels the ball out to an open teammate and breaks the game open that is his real skill. Most of our defenders hold the ball for 5 seconds before kicking down the line. But Simmo almost always seems finds a spare man.
Samo doesn't get rid of the ball instantly, he dances around, surveys the field and usually hits a marking/running target.
Outside of Carlton, I look at someone like Sidebottom. I swear every time he gets the ball, a teammate has it in an advantageous position 2 seconds later.

So, I ask....who are the guys in the draft pool that will not just get the ball but break the game open or start a chain that makes meaningful progress up the field?

I'm happy for our players to lose possession, if it means the umpires are carrying the ball back to the centre.

Very amusing Stamos, but completely unhelpful.

Pot, something, kettle, something something

How about SPS - retains possession with those dinky 15m passes, top 10 pick and unbelievably he's available for free!

I don't like editing my old posts, and yeah....that part didn't age very well. But I stand by the overall point.

Plus SPS baffles me to this day. An AFL quality footballer (not just junior) who just got worse with every year...

Think one of the best traits for a draftee/player is versatility

In today's game, above average disposal and how they see the game unfold
Yup spot on positive traits & essential, Footy IQ, quality ball distribution to advantage with penetration, speed and not too small, lightweights & small frames are counterproductive, only if blessed with magical speed and amazing skills.

The highlights of Shoenmaker, fmd what a great kick and mark.
Could he play FWD/MID? Looks a better risk than Caddy as a 3rd tall.

He's played wing and half forward but never on ball. Ran a 6:35 2km which was far exceeding what I thought he would, generally has looked to carry a fair bit of puppy fat. Perhaps realising he's a red hot chance at being drafted has finally smartened him up.

reid looks like the next walsh.........carries himself in a similar manner and speaks as well too - these young men have been in the spotlight since they pulled on a boot but some know better than others how to deal with all the carry on.........

If we're after a 3rd tall, look no further than Logan Morris. Thought he had a really good Championships, and definitely one who should be available at our pick. Reminds me a bit like a Jake Riccardi as the creative 3rd tall option with great hands.

If we are looking at draftable attributes then almost the #1 that our current regime (list manager/coaching panel) are looking for are good footballers with a ruthless competitive streak particularly defensively.

It's hardly a big secret. The fact that Fogarty remains on our list and Fisher has been traded (no offence intended) gives an indication as to what we are looking for. Tough uncompromising players to complement our weapons. If we're looking at flankers and pockets that's what we'll be looking for.

We currently have picks 22, 26, 70, 78

Fun fact: In 2017, those picks were

22 - Lachie Fogarty
26 - Luke Ryan
70 - Angus Schumacher
78 - Jarrod Garlett

So we have form with these picks. Not good form, but form...

192cm.

Bit more growth in him?
