Sellers and the Dominator can't see what the issue is ??
Just reading in Percy Jones' book about how filthy he was in 1980 with the Dominator, big Val (not playing at the time) and Michael Young (flicked at years end) having a big session in the week of the final against Collingwood.

We went out in straight sets. Apparently the trio went to a barby at Doncaster, then a pub at Croydon, then the Richmond social club. Imagine doing that these says, turning up at another clubs (who went on to win the flag) social club after having given it a fair work out.

We are in the best position to be trading a future first.

If I was trading with Carlton I'd be assuming they finish similar next year or better. And valuing our F1 as 16-18.

There's basically no downside risk for the trading partner, but there is upside if we slip.

In contrast, if Nth put up its F1, teams would assume they were getting pick 1 or 2. Thats incredible, but teams would be paying a fortune for that best case scenario, but there is potential downside if North end up with say pick 5 or 6.

Basically top teams trading out a future first probably have the most to lose...

There's been a few red flags about Shoenmaker. Copped a lengthy club suspension for drinking early in U/18 season and reported that its still potentially an issue. Don't know him and it might be a storm in a tea cup. I'm comfortable that our recruiters would do due diligence and if they're happy so would I be.
Think it’s a really interesting when you look at Schoenmaker & Stevens- they could be similar picks in the draft.

You can’t hang Shoen for his mistake - but jeez it’s a pretty big **** up.

Stevens is the polar opposite & by all reports his attitude is awesome.
Regardless of our need & the difference of position played IMO I hope we would draft the kid who’s shown better attitude & commitment.
Pretty hard to teach/train maturity/character.

It’s tough, being a dick doesn’t mean you can’t be a bloody good footballer

We easily could have had the 11-12 pick this year, extremely fortunate in both finals that put us in a preliminary final, due to that we over achieved this year. Making another preliminary final next year would be huge for us but just as easily we could miss finals altogether, this competition is tough. Our future first could be anywhere from 8-16...

Schoenmaker is a weapon down back and if he gets his defensive game up to standard he will be an absolute steal at his expected draft range. Being able to kick 60m off a step, actively pushing forward to kick goals and set up play is something almost no others in this draft or the AFL possess.

Compared him to Matt Suckling earlier in the year and I still see it, has shown he can impact off a wing and half forward too. Probably not as good at ground level as Suckling though

And if North hadn't agreed (which they wouldn't) we keep Fisher, and miss out on E. Hollands as we didn't have a list spot for him ?

The valuation was for about pick 30, they offered us about pick 40 which we declined and both sides worked to get a deal that they thought was about right. We downgraded our first rounder and got a better second rounder as a result.
And if we take what was written by the Age in the aftermath of the trade, it makes it even better. Peter Ryan is a good journo imo, and doesn't make these things up cough cough Jon Ralph cough cough

Why Carlton was content to give up pick 17 in the Fisher trade

"Some Carlton supporters have been wondering why Carlton were happy to give up pick 17 as part of the Zac Fisher deal to get North Melbourne’s picks 21 and 25 in return.

Carlton knew they were likely to get the player they are keen on at either pick 17 or pick 21 (which is still in the first round) in the national draft."

So essentially, we're still likely to get the same player we're keen on, and received an early 2nd round pick as well. It's similar to the Elijah trade of pick 26 for 28, where we lose nothing.

That's pretty shrewd trading by Austin on all accounts.

Bring him in, stick him in a house with our hardest training players & let him know for the 1st yr he’s not drinking.

Yes, it’s well harsh & “technically” u can’t say that to him but he went & bought the piss he then sunk with teammates at a training camp!

If he is up for that, then welcome to the baggers

While it looks shrewd at the moment things can change and curveballs get thrown. Leake for instance was barely talked about 2 months ago and up until 3-4 weeks ago he wasn't seen in that top bracket of talent. Getting thrown into the middle and up forward and showing natural proficiency in both roles has skyrocketed his value if reports are true. Collard pre testing was seen as a top 25-30 odd prospect but after blitzing the combine he's now looked at in that 15-20 range.

We don't know who Austin is targeting but there is a chance the player he's after get picked up early on draft night and stuffs our plan around a bit.

Don't think Mirkov will make it, HOK is young but believe he will make it at the next level

Think we are okay for ruckmen/relief

But if there is a slider/undrafted kid, you would have to consider it
Would you consider Archer Reid if he slid? Dynamic mobile athlete with very good disposal and skills. Can play that KpF/Ruck role. With a better fitness base could also be a potential KPB like his brother Zac. I know him and have reffed him at basketball. He’s a two-way player with excellent hands and leap. Natural.

Went to that game. They pantsed us by 8 goals. Funny how the mind plays tricks - I could have sworn Phil Carman cut us up that day but looked him up and he was on his 3rd club by then. Must have been the '78 First-Semi with Fabulous Phil ??

Suckling is a good comparison. Also Dustin Fletcher or even more recently Noah Balta. Don't think he makes it to our first pick though anymore.

I can't see us trading into the teens should the Geelong Top 10 pick not pan out. Reading the Fisher trade rationale, the guy/s we want are likely to be there at 22 so no point jumping to 13-18 and giving up a second rounder to do it (or first even).

Gotta be one of that top group that will stand well above the rest to be worth it.

Which in turn means that there'll be players who also slide.

You are correct though in saying "we don't know who Austin is targeting" - which is why every club has more than one name on the whiteboard at each pick, because there are no givens any player will be available at your pick - unless you have pick 1.

Our original pick 17 will end up being around pick 22 after the academy/father sons, so that pick isn't even in the ballpark for Leake - or even Collard if he's now at 15-20 by your rankings - which I also agree with.

Was at that game too as a young fella. From memory, it was Ian(?) Lowe who carved us up with 5 goals. Ex Sth Melb player i think, with a beard. No.34.

Yeah, but who is it…?
Is it an obscure pick where we see potential, a reach for a later pick, a slider but hopefully not a bolter!
18 days to go…

ASSESSING THE 2023 DRAFT NEEDS FOR ALL 18 AFL CLUBS

Carlton
2023 draft hand:
22, 28, 70, 78, 96

Carlton enters the draft with picks 22 and 28 and should utilise these by taking the best midfielders available.

The club has lost some depth in the last two seasons with Paddy Dow, Ed Curnow and Will Setterfield now out the door and while they have a strong top-end on-ball unit, they need to start rebuilding underneath them.
Victorian midfielders Charlie Edwards and George Stevens should fall approximately in that range. Whoever they take, their eye should be on someone who could step up if needed in 2024.
Carlton needs another key forward on their list as well, but should target ready-made types rather than a teenage development prospect. Could they look to the state leagues with a later draft pick?

Verdict: Midfield depth and key position depth.

It's shrewd until that player is drafted at pick 19.

Austin is either being brave or stupid, it can only be one or the other.
