I feel like there is/was a lot of hyperbole about ours.

Agree, especially given that our revenue has always been decent for a mid-sized AFL club.

It's been used by the AFL to control us for more than a decade now, again, despite us being a mid-sized AFL club financially the entire time. It's been used by Koch to maintain power, only he can clear the debt because he's a financial genius etc. It stinks.

Commercial and Hospitality; $18.2 million ( 2022; $16.4 million)

Any chance you can DM him back and tell him to take Hinkley and **** off? Or something along those lines?

Maybe next time you can tell him to learn about the PAFC. A Hinkley coached team was the first in our AFL history to go out in straight sets David.

Didn’t he state core business revenue 57 mil? As REH questioned, can you find out what that is?

No it wasn't.

My gut feel is the AFL distribution in 2023 was about $20m.

It was $17.8m last year, the 10th largest, and the AFL had to give the clubs the $$$ to pay the players the backdated increase in 2023 salary cap amounts after they finally signed the CBA with the AFLPA in September - 10% for men's is about $1.5 mil and 29% with the women's is about $400k.

$18.9m + $18.2m + $20m = $57.1m. I think this is what makes up Core business revenue.

The club's statement announcing the 2023 result in the OP said
  • Core business revenue up 13 per cent to $57.5 million.

Can we trust that the profit & debt levels are accurate or is it simply moving numbers around on the chess board to make it more appealing?

It’d all check out. The financial reports are signed off by one of the big accounting firms and lodged with ASIC.

The financial health and viability of the club is an all-time red herring.

A delusional fever dream for our enemies, and a convenient crutch for the stale board.

Got that prison bar boost there. Wonder what it would be membership year on year.

concur. membership/gate/ticketing/matchday/corporate and sponsorship all appear covered by the first two. 20m is about what i expect give then Saints and North hit 23m each

I don’t pay attention enough, fo all clubs receive this distribution?

We've tended to be around the same amount as Sydney and bizarrely Carlton in recent years. Mid table.

Carlton receive a lot of money - especially in the last two years with big increases in members and attendance - from its centrallly collected league revenues, afl club membership support, mcg revenue distributions, and whatever it makes from Docklands.

I used the 2022 figure from the AFL annual report.

The AFL records the figure as cash out but there are cost reimbursements, eg travel subsidies in there, so clubs record this as negative costs not revenue and I know that a few clubs record the monies the AFL distributes from AFL Memberships when people tick the club bsupport box, as membership revenue, not as an AFL distribution.

Collingwood with 13,000 AFL club support members and about $1.9m distributed to them from the AFL is a prime example.

Princess Park is used a lot for AFLW so I suspect that is one reason why Carlton get such a large distribution figure. The AFL would be paying them some sort of rental fee to have the games played there.

Edit AFL umpires base is at Princess Park so AFL would be paying rent to Carlton for this and they probably include it in the distribution figure.

I personally don't like the business model of relying on good on field results to turn a profit.
I'm personally not convinced that our on-field performances at the moment are having much impact at all on attendances. Our on-field stuff is hardly inspiring, and the PTSD we face watching this team clearly still has a huge impact on the atmosphere at games which is just incredibly flat.

I think a new coach in the next year or so, with our crop of youngsters could be a massive boost for the club in this sense.

Of course on field performance matters. We won't be getting 30k to games if we're winning 4 or 5 games a year.

I have made enquiries.

Per David Koch via twitter DM - and as expected

Core revenue is anything related to football… membership, merchandise, sponsorship etc. Non core is revenue not related to football… our licensed club and pub etc.
