It really wasn't that offensive though, it was typical boomer humour. Stuff I've heard from a bunch of people making jokes about those jeans that come with pre-installed holes in them. It's insane, you spend $300 on jeans and they're full of holes, is there any wonder an ultimate boomer like Jeff Kennett would make the same remark about them?

To me it's clearly not racist from Jeff, just him treating her as he'd treat anyone else wearing those sorts of jeans.

I could see my dad saying something similar to my daughter.

The Kennett 'joke' was construed as a racial skur by Rioli's wife. It was not intended to be racist, however it was explained at the time this type of patronising insult is directed towards aboriginals as a generalising trope.
Something like ' lazy abo, here are some coins to buy something to wear other than rags'
I am just relaying what I have heard as an explanation. We don't know the context or the environment at Hawthorn. I do know Rioli won't go near the place.
Just glad for all our troubles, racism allegations has never been part of them.

Agree with you there lol. I don't mind rips but not to the point half the thing is missing or it looks like a rag more than anything else.

Went to the Great Barrier Reef out from Airlie years ago.
When we got on, they gave out Quells tablets. "If you get seasick take on, if you don't get seasick take one anyway because they are harmless and you'll look like an idiot if you don't take it and get seasick ' So everyone took one.

Then we stop and pick up some extra passengers at Daydream Island, but they don't give them the tablets , oversight i guess.
When we hit the waves, man did that lot get sick, saw one guy drop his false teeth into the bag. I was being an arseh*le and drinking beer in front of them.

Helicopters did a good trade that day. (Fair few didn't take the boat back ).

I seriously hope you don't actually believe it's the person making the comment or doing the action that decides whether it's offensive, sexist, or racist.

Then again you actually may in which case I'll stop wasting my time.

In situations like Kennett and the ripped jeans comment, it’s really complex as it’s subjective.

Rioli’s wife feels it’s racist as she has related it to persecution she’s felt being treated as an underclass her entire life.

She could have also argued that Kennett’s comment was sexist implying that that women need men to solve their financial problems (can’t afford new jeans) and as a wealthy man his intention was to make her feel less worthy because of her gender.

If he said it to a white man who had a poor upbringing they could equally be offended that he is having a crack at their background.

The incident in isolation doesn’t feel like racism to me and I think it’s a bit dangerous to classify it that based on subjectivity. Then any comment anyone makes could be labelled anything based on how one person feels.

Lesson here is if you are in a position of privilege like Kennett is, probably don’t make dumb jokes at the expense of someone from a different socio-demographic background. More so if that person is the partner of one of your employees.
