Media links us to Clay Tucker (although Norths also linked) and Marty Hore. The former would indicate pessimism about Preuss, perhaps short term (can't solve his current woes) or longer term (no longer the answer to our ruck problem) - and Madden would be some time away anyway. Unsure of the attraction of Marty Hore; at his height, he'd be taking the spot of Idun or Brown, which doesn't seem a value move.

Maybe we've just been very good at disguising our intention.

Anyway, we'll see come Wednesday.

He has had some massive numbers this year in particular marks, wonder how many have been intercepts.

An article about the benefits of us bidding for Harley Reid by letting Himmelberg go and packaging up the 3 first round pick for Harley. I personally think that it’s not worth it, but it seems that Harley is a generational talent who is the undoubted number 1 draft pick.

Packaging selections 4,5 and let’s say 19 is worth 4,860 draft points. Pick 1 is valued at 3,000 points. On pure metrics GWS would be giving up too much, but prying Reid away from West Coast or North means they will need to pay more than the draft calculator determines.

If the Giants can pull this off, the next challenge would be re-signing Reid in the same way they were unable to do with Caldwell.

Reid is close with 2022 Pick 1 Aaron Cadman, Category B rookie Jason Gilbee, and 19-year-old Cooper Hamilton.

GWS passed on both its picks in the MSD.

Rumour is that we only wanted the ruckman Clay Tucker, and once he was off the board we elected not to choose anyone.

First round

1. West Coast - Ryan Maric (Gippsland Power)
2. North Melbourne - Robert Hansen jnr (Subiaco)
3. Hawthorn - Clay Tucker (Eastern Ranges)
4. Richmond - Matt Coulthard (Glenelg)
5. Greater Western Sydney - Pass
6. Sydney - Harry Arnold (Brisbane VFL)
7. Geelong - Mitch Hardie (Woodville-West Torrens)
8. Fremantle - Ethan Stanley (Box Hill Hawks)
9. Essendon - Jaiden Hunter (Perth)
10. Western Bulldogs - Caleb Poulter (Footscray)
11. Port Adelaide - Quinton Narkle (Essendon VFL)

Second round

12. Hawthorn - Brandon Ryan (Northern Bullants)
13. Richmond - James Trezise (Richmond VFL)
14. Greater Western Sydney - Pass
15. Sydney - Jack Buller (Claremont)

So Kingsley wanted Tucker as ruck insurance, but when hawthorn picked him before us, decided to stick with our current list (even with 2 long term injuries to Kennedy and Darcy) for the rest of the year? Indicates he is happy with the current list he has, or there was no one (other than Tucker) that was good enough?

Anyone you take either has to be delisted at the end of the year, or you need to delist someone else to find space for them because at the end of the year you've now got four players for two list spots (since the injured guys will return). So unless you see them as a long term prospect or someone who can fill a desperate need right now, there's not a heap of incentive in recruiting from the MSD and given you're generally picking through the scraps after the first few picks it makes sense to me.

It wouldn't be Kingsley's call. Given the age of our current rucks it's time to develop another.

Bit of talk that “pick purchasing” might come in soon. I guess it’s sort of already been around. But in any case, I wonder how much a pick 5 is, for example? $700000??? I have no idea. If we sold one of our top picks it would help no end with our tight cap.

True indeed. I think we have picked well in the mid year drafts so far though? Peatling from the 2021 mid year draft has played more than 25 games for us, and Derksen from the 2022 mid year draft has been a very useful VFL player and should debut sometime this year.

Yep and we had two spots available, so obviously we didn't rate anyone as highly as we rated Peatling or Derksen.

Hopefully this issue with the cap gets better over time. But if I was a player and we gave away a top 5 pick, I would leave. If management is stuffing up the list, why stay on a sinking ship. It is your chances of winning a flag being wasted. Especially if I am Sam Taylor or Callaghan.

This is tremendous. Our gamestyle will be built around guys like Darcy. He is the most agile player to come through the system. The club really liked what they saw prior to the injury.
Good signing. But no movement on Ash or Himmelberg yet, and I am increasingly pessimistic about HH.

So am I. That is the problem with Free Agency.
Anybody decent who is a FA attracts a feeding frenzy as they can be gotten potentially for free. Hopefully we make finals, Richmond I think is looking less attractive, Geelong too if I was Harry. I guess it depends in part where he wants to play on the field. Swans surely play him down back if he went there.

I don’t blame HH. This is his chance to maximise his $ and he has to do the best thing for his family and himself. I want him to stay though and hope the friendships and connections built over his time with us, makes him accept a lower than market offer to be with us at the end of the year

We seem to be having a strategy of extending the two year contracts for our current draft picks from 2024 to 2026- Rowston, Gruzewski and now Darcy Jones. Effectively a 4 year contract for new draft picks. Just Cadman and Toby McMillan of our 5 current draft picks now have contracts that expire at the end of 2024.
