WCE would want Sam Taylor to roll back one first round draft pick. Maybe Cogs might be acceptable for "part payment" but wouldn't cut much off the price. Which would mean a price less than his worth to us.

Port chose wisely. GWS chose poorly that year. It's worth noting that we could have drafted two of those 3 players. Only Rozee was gone before our pick - we selected Caldwell one ahead of Butters, and Hately ahead of Duursma. Imagine if we had those two running around in our team at the moment.
Probably thought they were flight risks.

If our picks were 3 &10 and the trade was 1 & 19 for 3&10. I think both sides take it.

We don’t have a relatively young list which is reasonably well balanced. We need quality not quantity. Our second round pick would still allow us to draft on need (speed/developing tall).

Our midfield mix would be Kelly, cogs, Finn, Green, Pez, Reid, Angwin, Wehr, Rowston

I think Daniels will play more and more midfield minutes in the future. Especially if Jones is what what he was projecting to be.
I think we should take two quality picks to this years draft and trade into next years.
A terrible result would be trading up to get Reid and he leaves in two years… sounds like he wants to be in Melbourne.

By all accounts Reid is a superstar and would be a great pick. But as your post says, it depends if he will go back to Victoria like Brauhn after his 2 years - the club will need to do very careful due diligence if we are trading to get the number 1 draft pick, as it could all go horribly wrong.

More chatter that our club is looking at trading up to get Reid. Most are based on what McCartney said in the Gettable interview

The Giants became the first side in more than 20 years to trade up for the No.1 pick last season, claiming key forward prospect Aaron Cadman, parting with selections No.3, 12 and a future second-rounder to shift up the order.

They again hold a strong draft hand this year and currently possess picks No.4 and No.6 thanks to Jacob Hopper's move to Richmond last season – as well as their future first-round selection – and have already held talks around potentially moving up once more.

There's no way they would take that. I know a club did last year but this is a different prospect with Reid.
If we look at the ladder right now we would have 4&7 and I think that would be the asking price...maybe more.
I'm not saying we should do it, I'm just being realistic about what it'll cost to get Reid

I would happily do that. I just don't think West Coast do. They'll want more. Even if Richmond's pick stayed around 6, I'd reckon we'd be hard-pressed to have them accept 3 & 6 for 1 outright, let alone 19 going back as well.

If we had a guarantee from Reid that he'd stay (e.g. like Daicos signed an extension straight off the bat) then 3 & 6 would be palatable.

However, we could do with more quality in the midfield, and guys like McKercher or Sanders could provide that. Similarly, presuming that Davis retires and possibly Keeffe too, we'd need another developing KPD. Dan Curtin (likely top 10 pick who's playing today against the highly-rated Jed Walter, so we'll see what he's capable of) could be that, so too could NSW-based (but nor academy) Connor O'Sullivan (probably in the #10-20 range). I'd guess that at least one of Preuss and Flynn will move at end of season, so another ruck could be on the cards - and there's a couple who could be in the #8 to 20 range that we might be interested in (given past interest). So, we will give up a lot of opportunity just to take Harley Reid. If so, he'd want to be good, and he'd want to stay!

Yes, and for Cadman we had to give our picks 3, 12 and a future second rounder. Given the generational talent Reid is supposed to be, I think we will have to give more if we want to trade for him. Also Cadman was probably never going to be the first pick for the other clubs, and hence were happy with us trading our picks to get him?

I assume you are saying that ironically...
Yes. I know it’s easy to pick apart drafting efforts years later and I try not to, but there have been some decent fails along with some bloody good choices.
Our recruiters have an extra challenge of picking top kids who will be content with both moving away from home plus playing in front of tiny crowds. Maybe someone like Butters wouldn’t have stuck with the Giants had he been picked.

From today’s News Corp. papers:

Greater Western Sydney has offered Harry Himmelberg a new long-term deal and is confident he will stay despite his free agency status.

Rival clubs including Sydney and Richmond are interested in dragging Himmelberg out of the Giants given his capacity to play as a dangerous forward or intercept defender.

GWS football boss Jason McCartney said during the week the club was prepared to offer him a deal as long as five seasons.

On Sunday he confirmed that the Giants had finally lodged a deal with Himmelberg’s agent David Trotter at Hemisphere Management.

The Giants believe the Riverina-raised 27-year-old wants to stay at the club.

“That is correct, we have been in constant dialogue with his management. We knew it would be a discussion point at the mid-point of the year and so we have put something in front of him,” he told 3AW.

“Harry had an awareness from my conversations with him he would be looking at a long-term deal and we would be looking after him remuneration-wise. He has got that in writing now.

“I am (confident) because the difference is he’s been at the club for eight years, so everything is new. He wanted to have a look at how we were tracking, the new program, a whole new coaching team. I can understand that although he has been around for a while he wanted to use this first part of the year to see how we were tracking.”

While GWS might have secured a top-10 compensation pick if Himmelberg departed as a free agent he said the Giants were desperate to retain such a valuable asset.

“That is the thing, we have already got two first round picks anyway,” McCartney said.

“There comes a point in time where you don’t need too many more (draft) picks, to be honest. We have had a lot and traded out a lot of high quality players. Harry is 27, we are confident his best football is ahead of him, he is coming into that sweet spot. It’s a balance of having good kids coming through but also retaining guys in that age bracket who are so versatile as well and so important to where we want to be in the next year or so.”

For years and years I have said I hope we have a quiet trade period. And I'll say it again this year. We need to not lose guys like HH and Ash; we need to build on the games the current squad has played together.

I presume that we'll lose at least one (possibly both) of Flynn and Preuss, which is fine given that Briggs has rapidly established himself as a quality young ruckman. I'd prefer to keep Flynn as a solid backup, and move on Preuss who's proven to be an injury-riddled disappointment.

I'm unsure if we'll give Lachie Keeffe another year - given that Phil Davis surely has to retire at end of season - but if we do, I think there's a chance that one or both of he and Adam Kennedy get tactically moved to the rookie list (i.e. delisted then re-selected).

On his performances this year, I'm very happy to keep Cal Ward for another year. He does need to be prepared to be managed, and also to play VFL games if we need to blood some young mids and use his experience in VFL. But he's still contributing strongly at the moment.

Hopefully he completes the registration paperwork accurately!! 🤦

So far we have had a good start to our signings with Tom Green, Callaghan and Buckley re-signing, and most of our 2022 draft picks (with the notable exception of Cadman so far) being signed till 2026. I think Himmelberg and Ash are the 2 biggest players we need to re-sign and agree with you that Flynn and Ward will also be re-signed. Unfortunately, we will lose one of our inaugural Giants, with Davis unlikely to be made an offer.

However, we could do with more quality in the midfield, and guys like McKercher or Sanders could provide that. Wouldn't touch Curtin with either of our firsts atm, needs to have a couple of good Champs games aerially to cement himself as a top-10 pick for me, because at his height he's not going to get the opportunity to play as a tall flanker like he wants to currently. O'Sullivan on the other hand I'm all in on, would be a very handy addition with a pick from 5 onwards.

The more players pushing themselves into the top tier of talent the better for us atm, it either gives WCE more incentive to split Pick 1 if we're set on Reid, or just gives us more options in more positions.

I think this boy is one of yours?

Charlie McCormack with some truly impressive contested marking for the Allies against WA.

Thanks noobermensch.

Not sure what we do with either of this year's GWS Academy players - Charlie McCormack (KPF) and midfielder (being played as small defender) Harvey Thomas. They've each had some highlights in the two U18 Championships games played by Allies to date, but I'm not sure either's skills/attributes will readily translate to AFL.

Some truly ambitious trade suggestions for pick 1 on Eagles board. 4,6,9(which we don't have?), Kingsley's first born, Our Social media team and Canberra for pick 1
Feels like unders for pick 1.

I stopped reading when someone suggested 4,6 and Taylor for Pick 1 and a 2nd, had to explain to a colleague why I was laughing/crying at my desk
