Here's that top 13 from PMBangers:

It will depend on what we're looking for, and what happens with the final ladder, trades & free agents, obviously.

I'm still keen on Connor O'Sullivan to replace Davis/Keeffe, so if we fall outside of that 6-7 range, trading up might be worthwhile. The other potential target is Nick Watson, if he was to drop a touch (if clubs at the pointy end are a little concerned about his height).

Zane Duursma had a much better game for VC against VM; if we want another fast, tall half-forward he could be in the mix - although personally I'm a little wary given that he's underwhelmed this year, and I'd prefer a true mid.

I'd be happy with Ryly Sanders as an addition to our midfield, where I think we could do with some depth. He's not lightning quick, but he's also not slow, and he does defend too. There are rumours about VFL House granting Norths direct access to him because of their poor ladder position 4 years in a row (he's under their NGA). He's also a risk as a Tasmanian, with the new team coming in, but there's a dearth of decent mids at the pointy end of this draft.

Darcy Wilson might be another option, but he's a little outside at the moment, and we have Angwin and Wehr, with Cumming and Fahey also able to do that job, so a more balanced inside/outside mid would be my preference.

Otherwise, trading into next year if we don't lose too many players might be a decent move.

Obviously, the Coates Talent League continues a while longer, so we'll see how the names move around on draft boards by the end of the season.

We don't have any B Cat spots at this point in time; we'll have to see what happens with the Cat A rookie list to see if we're likely to take one of the academy kids this year.

Is Connor OSullivan in the Giants academy?

Bummer. I thought he was.
Reckon he'll be a target for Swans early as well, for the same reasons (he's good & he's NSW). So, we need them to finish as low as possible on the ladder that he'd be too much of a reach. Then hope that the other teams with picks before us see bright, shiny other toys in preference to a key defender.

Or we trade up to get him.

Yes, entirely possible. But it's always the question of how early you trade into, and how much is that costing you to do so. Depends on the final order, but if Gold Coast fell down a touch, they might be open to trading with us on first round picks, because they'd then just sell those on for even more points ... but it might get us what we want.

Of course, it depends on who we lose at trade time, and who we rate in the draft; plus if we have a positional priority. As Jason McCartney has said, we essentially have little trade capacity and have to draft most of our solutions. So we might need to pay a little to fit our exact needs.

Our post-SOS recruiting has been much better and I'm sure that Kingers knows exactly what types are needed.

Better but not perfect. There's also a degree of independence of the recruiting/list management team and the coach - though I would always hope they communicate well!

My point is simply that while we fans may have a view of what/who we'd like with our picks, the recruiting/management team has their own view, which is clearly much better placed to understand all of the intricacies of list management. (However, when they pick someone that fans scratch their heads over, who later proves to be a failure there's a fair degree of frustration. Jackson Hately is the poster boy for that, in both talent and "go-home" factor.)

I reckon the Hately one they got completely spooked. I think they were super confident after they took Caldwell that Butters would still be there. If you watch the draft video Caruso even says “Butters” when he’s clearly asked by a colleague for the looming pick.

This was frustrating on so many levels in that Caldwell had trouble getting on the park and then pissed off to mummy after one contract and Butters has turned into a freak.

Apparently from the player interviews Butters had one of the highest scores (however they measure) of a need to settle and stay, if that makes sense. The interstate clubs felt he was a better risk based on psyche testing. His knock was his skinny body.

Hately has always been one paced and was never dominant enough to overcome this, a very vanilla one dimensional player who just was very professional and well coached.

I’m enjoying the karma that it hasn’t worked out for Adelaide.

you can never get them all right, and never will.

The current team seem very big on character, and at the time everyone was talking up Hately's character, school captain etc etc

He is clearly a bust, and with the benefit of hindsight, a poor choice, but at the time a reasonable decision. It was considered a reach or anything.

XOH was picked on similar basis.

Caldwell left for an excessively big contract at Essendon. I dont blame players for that. Although it sucks for us

Do we want Grundy, with both Collingwood and Melbourne paying a substantial portion of his salary? Fox Sports speculates that we could be one of six possible suitors, even though we have Briggs

GWS GIANTS
Another club in the market for Grundy’s services last year, but this one comes with a key caveat in the form of a 201cm giant — Kieren Briggs. Briggs, 23, has announced himself as a genuine long-term ruckman for the Giants in an impressive breakout campaign since replacing Matt Flynn in the senior side midway through the season. Moving past both Flynn and Braydon Preuss, GWS now faces the question of whether it genuinely sees Briggs as the club’s No. 1 ruck moving forward, which, based on current form, it probably should, or if it could instead seek out a more established player to fill the role, like Grundy, who’d clearly stunt Briggs’ development. The Giants could also look to do something like what the Western Bulldogs did when they added Stefan Martin to help chop out Tim English while he was still maturing, although Briggs is probably more physically advanced than English was at that stage.

as backup maybe. On the cheap. If it costs nothing in trade.
