What Haynes has done on the field is there for all to see, consistent, courageous, classy.

What he has done off the field in taking less to stay at various times, not leaving when things were going bad and mates were bailing, pushing his own money back to help the club keep the group together.

Yes he is on very good money now and that money may very well exceed what he can do for us but he’s bloody well earned it. He’s a shining light as to how we would like every player treat our wonderful club, love him to bits.

AFL 2023: Adam Kingsley says Giants open to trading for No.1 draft pick

By Lachlan Mckirdy

News Corp Australia Sports Newsroom

26 JULY 2023

The Giants have confirmed they are open to exploring a trade to obtain the No.1 draft pick for the second consecutive year.

Following the trade that saw Tim Taranto head to Richmond this off-season, the Giants hold two first-round picks heading into the 2023 draft.

Those picks currently sit at 9 and 12 and could be an enticing option for a team looking to capitalise on multiple early picks.

Giants coach Adam Kingsley said all cards were on the table when it came to thinking about how best to improve his squad.

“It’s always an interesting discussion whether you pick one at the pointy end or you take two mid-first round,” Kingsley said on SEN Sportsday.

“You try to add value to your list, upgrade a position or add a star, maybe two if you can.

“I haven’t got an answer now. But we’ll certainly discuss both options, see where pick 1 sits and whether or not they’re prepared to deal with us.”

West Coast is the likely owner of the selection with only one win so far this season.

Good judges believe that Harley Reid is the standout prospect in this year’s draft and would go straight into the line-up of any team. However, the depth of the problems at the Eagles have led many to suggest splitting pick 1 and bringing in as many first-round players as possible would be the better long-term strategy.

Kingsley’s comments suggest the Giants are more than happy to be the team to help facilitate that once again.

The Giants traded up to the No.1 pick in the 2022 draft to recruit Aaron Cadman. However, they had to give up a lot in return to the Kangaroos including picks 3, 12 and a future second-round pick.

Thanks to an influx of other trades, they still went into that draft with picks 15, 18 and 19 showing they were able to balance out their options.

It will prove a tougher task for the Giants following their return to form. They have forced their way back into the top eight thanks to a six-game winning streak as they look to make the finals in Kingsley’s first year in charge.

While it has been an impressive streak, the rookie coach won’t allow his team to become complacent.

“We’ve got a lot of inexperience in our team at this point,” he said.

“To be able to introduce them to AFL football and really try and develop them as people and players, so far so good.

“But we do have a lot of work to do. We’re not content that we might make finals, we’re certainly aiming to make finals and then hopefully build on that year after year.”

I doubt we will have enough draft capital to convince WCE to give up 1. They'd probably need a 7 and 8 level deal and 11,12 probably won't get it done. Don't get me wrong....I'd love it and he's the perfect style player for us.

We made the right choice selecting Kingsley to be senior coach.

He knows what he's doing.

I think there's no chance that our draft hand gets pick #1 off WCE, but AK's signalling that we're open to trade options that move us up the order. This year, hopefully with only a small number of players coming off the list, and the way the draft quality appears to be unfolding, a move into the earlier picks might make eminent sense - even if not specifically for #1.

BOMBERS EXPECTED TO LAND MCKAY

Kangaroos free agent Ben McKay is likely to land at Essendon at season’s end, according to SEN’s Sam Edmund. A report last month said the cashed-up Bombers were set to make McKay their number one target in a bid to reunite the defender with former coach Brad Scott. It’s also been reported the Kangaroos were open to parting ways with the 25-year old amid links if they could land a top-three pick as compensation.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast, Edmund believes all signs point to McKay moving to Essendon on a deal that’d likely see the 17th-placed Roos, who already have Pick 2 based on current ladder position, also gain Pick 3. “I think that’s the landing spot for Ben McKay, the Bombers,” Edmund told SEN radio.“I think it would be a shock if he stayed, a big shock. That’s probably the best way to put it.”

We need Richmond to fall over

Gee I would love the wizard to be on our list

He is worth trading up for imo

Personally, I believe it's conceivable that the Wizard might drop into the mid single digits ... in which case I could see us trading up for him.
Being quite small might Ward a few off.
I reckon the Gold coast kids go early (and the third probably not too far behind them), so exclude them, if you look at the first 5 live picks, the only club I can see risking an early pick on a small forward is Melbourne who have Fremantle's pick
If North get a priority and compensation for McKay and get picks 2,3 and 4, I think in that case they may take him.
Unless they can trade 3 and 4 for 1 with WCE

Too many variables at the moment (FA compo, PPs, trades) to bother hypothesising exactly which club might take which players where. He may go early ... but he's one who has got a question mark that might just see him slide a few spots ...

Unless Richmond lose every game from here, we are no chance. Probably need us and Richmond to win no more than 2 out of the last 10 between us,so hopefully we make finals and pick1 is out of reach.
I favour a strong agreement between us and gold coast to trade between us as much as possible. I would do 5 for say 12,14 with them. Gives them 500 more points, they can trade 12,14 to get the points they need, probably a bit for the future as well.
5 gets us say Watson, or Dursuuma.

no way that Gold coast will do that trade. Those picks get sucked up matching anyway. Yes it is 500 more points. but in terms of points they are way better off trading it into a slew of later picks. It is far more likely they'll trade pick 5 into next year.
We may be able to trade them a future first (and maybe a lower pick we are not going to use for points) for 5 and try and wrap 5 and Richmonds pick for 1 or 2. We could than trade our own pick back into next year.

The point is not for them to plan to use those picks, but to parlay them into even more points with additional trades. But, it's useful to have round 1 picks because if they are limited by the vacant list spots, they may not be able to take a bunch of second and third round picks into draft night. Round 1 picks carry value - clubs are always going to want to trade into first round. As well, they can trade one of those picks into next year - there's better value and less risk with a mid-range pick for a club expecting to be mid-range.

I actually think that sort of trade (or with Bulldogs, who also have two mid-first round picks) is smart for the Suns.

If they hold pick #5, ignore the potential NM PP, that's 1878 points. #9 & #12 is 2637 points. We might need to get something back, such as #56 (194 points), but essentially clubs will come for both of those picks. They can sell one for a future first round pick, and wait until draft night to sell the other for multiple second round picks to match Walter. Good business.

For us, it puts as at the pointy end of the draft. Not for Reid, but for someone like Watson, or is he's gone, perhaps O'Sullivan.

They can also lock in a trade but only execute on the day (as seen with the Lions and NM last year) - a team with more list spots can stash sufficient low picks to make it worth GC's while, and then trade them all for the 1st round pick on the day of the draft.

FWIW, some commentary on our trade targets - part of a series where this outlet looks at each clubs trades

In the context of Riccardi heading back to Vic, and we don't offer Derksen a new contract then targeting one of Georgiades, Harris Jones, or Tom Fullarton would make sense.

I think we could do it, so they can use those picks in separate trades with probably Adelaide and Sydney who both have two pretty good 2nd round picks, effectively Gold Coast swap out 5 for 4 picks in about the range 20-26.

they absolutely could go that route
However, they won't need that many points, so unless they want to take in more than the 3 academy kids, they are far more likely to trade it into the future.

There are much cheaper ways to get points than trade away first round picks, especially one as early as pick 5.

Just commenting that the word parlay isn't used nearly enough and I appreciate you bringing it back to life. Are you a pirate by any chance? ;)
