That's a shocker. I thought he held up ok this year - his leg was clearly not the same weapon as it was two years ago but he wasn't disgracing himself out there.

Better a year too long than a year too late.

Been good for us. I like that he goes out on his terms.

Like others, I am surprised that he's called it a day. He has been very serviceable this year, although a touch down on past years. I do suspect, like others has postulated, that he was tapped on the shoulder. And we appear to be well stocked in the small/medium forward department.

Anyway, thanks Dan for your outstanding input as a mature-age selection. 100% professional, never gave less than your all, and it reflects on your values as a person. I wish you (and your family) all the very best for the future.

Here's the RMC top 40 draftee rankings:

Their top 15 (briefly) were:

1. Harley Reid
2. Jed Walter
3. Colby McKercher
4. Nick Watson
5. Daniel Curtin
6. Zane Duursma
7. Ethan Read
8. Ryley Sanders
9. Connor O'Sullivan
10. Darcy Wilson
11. Nate Caddy
12. Jake Rogers
13. Jordan Croft
14. Ollie Murphy
15. Mitchell Edwards

There's some kind of salary cap benefit for players on the rookie list. Not all their wage is counted so this wouldn't save us anything really.
It's some set total equivalent to the minimum rookie wages, about $50k last time I checked but probably higher now. However anything Dan was on above that (which I assume he would be as a senior player) would still be against the cap.

Would be nice to get a bit more speed on the wings. Feel like Angwin on our list is the only true winger. Long term, Callaghan I thought would have more damage as a rover with Kelly. Dylan Stephens out of contract from the Swans, not tearing it up yet at AFL level but seems pretty consistent at VFL level. They have plenty of runners so wouldn't be a massive loss. Probably more likely to head to a VIC club if he chooses to leave, but thoughts on us asking the question about him? After Scully and Tommo left, always felt our endurance running stock took a big hit.

Interested in Hayden McLean as well given our need for a more reliable power forward. Unfortunately contracted for another year and gaining some form at the moment so don't see him moving anywhere.

no announcement of any Phil Davis retirement before our last home game of the season tomorrow? I would have thought if Phil was definitely retiring they would have announced it before the Essendon match - not wait for the Carlton away game next week.

Yes, I agree. But I can't imagine he's hanging on for another year ...

To me looking at Twomey’s write ups and our own PM Bangers thoughts McKercher makes the most sense.

Given his ascension in recent months and great play it’s going to take a trade up and I really think we should do it.

.....................................

McKercher seems to get the pill, he’s very speedy which suits our game style and he’s not an entitled Victorian. He really sounds like a good compliment to our team and I think seems more realistic than some of the other more vaunted or unavailable options.

Given the above we are unlikely to get McKercher unless we ‘trade up’, but at what cost?

If we want the Tasmanian because he ‘gets the pill’ and ‘he’s very speedy’, I found the following from today’s article ‘AFL Draft Intel: Latest news from around the country in countdown to 2023 AFL Draft’ (by Chris Cavanagh, News Corp Australia Sports) interesting (my bolding):

Ridiculous’ high-end runner

A first-round draft prospect has been compared to a Carlton rising star as he too eyes a role on a wing at AFL level.

Murray Bushrangers midfielder Darcy Wilson has excited in the Coates Talent League this season and shapes as one of the most athletically gifted players in this year’s draft pool.

Wilson ranked fifth in the Yo-Yo test during Victorian pre-season testing in March and has transferred that running ability onto the field this season.

He racked up a season-high 35 disposals for the Bushrangers in their round 15 win last weekend, along with seven marks, six clearances and a goal.

Carlton wingman Ollie Hollands, who was this week’s AFL Rising Star nominee, also came through the Bushrangers program before being selected at pick 11 in last year’s national draft.

“He (Wilson) logs twice as many high-speed metres – or he did on the weekend – as what Ollie Hollands did when played with us,” Bushrangers coach Mark Brown said.

His high-end running speed is ridiculous. That allows him to get to a lot of contests.”

While Wilson has been playing largely onball for the Bushrangers, a role on a wing beckons in the AFL.

“He lends perfectly to the wing,” Brown said.

“He’s also got some really good forward craft and he’s hitting the scoreboard pretty consistently and he’s a really nice mark.

“He’s got a lot of upside, no doubt.”

………………………….

Wilson is forecast above to go around about 10 which would suit us. Also the fact that he is from Wodonga means (one would think) he is less a flight risk than a Victorian Metropolitan player.

PMB will know much better if the above makes sense.

I was a fan of Darcy Wilson's early, and if we want a winger then he's certainly a classy option. However, in my view, we've got a fair number of outside runners - who can't translate inside - such as Angwin, Fahey, Cumming, Whitfield, Gilbee, and he would be another (although possibly the best quality of all). I think we need mids with inside capability - we are losing the stoppage battle too often. Hence why McKercher appeals, because he's got the speed to play outside but can certainly rotate inside (which would develop further at an AFL club).

Wilson is one I also like.

The results from the recent AFL U17 trial match of Vic Metro v NSW/ACT (at Werribee on 13 August 2023) were:

VIC METRO 5.4 | 9.8 | 14.10 | 17.15 (117)
NSW-ACT 4.1 | 9.2 | 13.5 | 15.7 (97)

GOALS:

Vic Metro: C. Richardson 3, T. Hotton 2, D. Hollow 2, S. Buck 2, D. Snell 2, T. Gross 2, J. Haeata, L. McInerney, N. King, N. Scott
NSW-ACT: J. Shanahan 3, J. Murphy 3, J. Harrison 2, N. Harper 2, H. Holdom, A. Swinnerton, T. Hitchens, O. Withers, T. Miller

RMC BEST:

Vic Metro: T. Gross, P. Retschko, L. McInerney, D. Hollow, N. King, S. Buck
NSW-ACT: J. Harrison, J. Shanahan, J. Delana, M. Woods, T. Forrest, J. Murphy

For the Supercoach results the top Vic Metro player was Nash King (Calder Cannons) on 155. For NSW/ACT the results were (scouting notes from ‘Rookie Me Central’):

NSW/ACT
155 – Joe Harrison, 180 cm, Sydney Swans Academy

141 – Josaia Delana, 174 cm, GWS Giants Academy (East Coast Eagles): Midfielder/Forward, Delana worked into the game nicely, making his most profound impact in midfield having also spent plenty of early minutes up forward. The Giants Academy member did some tidy work at stoppages, waxing well with his teammates by hand and helping shift the ball to the outside with little fuss. With more opportunities in attack, he could have showcased his speed and ability to take the game on.

121 – Jobe Shanahan, 192 cm, Bendigo Pioneers (Moama): Tall Forward, Shanahan put on an absolute marking clinic up forward for NSW-ACT, playing against many of the same players he has at Talent League level this season. The Bendigo Pioneers prospect started slowly but was consistently hard to beat in the air, reading the ball beautifully in flight and taking it one touch no matter what attention came his way. The well-skilled 192cm talent also hit the scoreboard with three set shot conversions and looks like being one to watch for 2024.

105 – Oliver Withers, 183 cm, GWS Giants Academy (Belconnen):
94 – Mitchell Woods, 179 cm, Sydney Swans Academy
90 – Zachary Nandlal, 171 cm, Sydney Swans Academy
82 – Joshua Murphy, 187 cm, Murray Bushrangers (North Albury)
68 – Felix Rugge-Price, 184 cm, Sydney Swans Academy
64 – Tom Forrest, 192 cm, Murray Bushrangers (Wangaratta Rovers)
63 – Logan Smith, 202 cm, GWS Giants Academy (Queanbeyan)
62 – Lachlan Hogan, 178 cm, Bendigo Pioneers (Moama)
56 – Thomas Hitchens, 188 cm, Sydney Swans Academy
55 – Alex Swinnerton, 175 cm, Murray Bushrangers (Lavington)
54 – Noah Harper, 191 cm, GWS Giants Academy (Collingullie Glenfield Park)
48 – Henry Holdom, 195 cm, GWS Giants Academy (Belconnen)
48 – Joel Cochran, 195 cm, Sydney Swans Academy
33 – Harvey Odgers, 177 cm, GWS Giants Academy (Narrandera)
31 – Nicholas Andreacchio, 180 cm, Sydney Swans Academy
28 – Cooper Bell, 198 cm, GWS Giants Academy (Belconnen)
26 – Cameron Este, 191 cm, Sydney Swans Academy
25 - Mitchell Bradley, 175 cm, GWS Giants Academy (East Coast Eagles)
23 – Tiernan Miller, 190 cm, GWS Giants Academy (Belconnen)
16 – Colby Hill, 185 cm, Sydney Swans Academy

Note: I believe the Giants would have had access to Shanahan, Forrest and Murphy, who were named amongst the best, under the old pre-2016 scheme before we had the ‘River zone’ stripped from our Academy.

Pointy end of the season for the list decisions and I think Lloyd made the right decision as I think he has lost some zip and power this year and if he saw the game plan meant he would be playing reserves next year and a shame he finishes short of 100 games but he has his family and future to plan for

Keefe and Davis surely retire with Keefe slowing down and mobility meaning he does not suit the game style, injuries have cooked Davis and last game today in Geelong in the reserves
I will add the fixturing of the reserves has been terrible and simple answer is home games match (Except SA + WA but they can be home games v Swans/Southport/Non aligned vic team travels interstate for 1 or at most 2 games per year) and when the AFL team travels to WA/SA either the extra bye or Swans/Southport/Non aligned vic team again for 1 or at most 2 games

I would hope Fleeton stays as depth but he does seem to be a bit too slow for his size or a bit too short to play true key defender and realistically he is looking at being 5th or 6th choice next year and it could be list spots as I am sure Kingsley would want players suited to his game style

Haynes is another with questions and I would like him to hang around but I think the coaches have him further down the pecking order with the preferred set up of talls being Taylor, Buckley, HH + Idun with the Aleer the next in line and his lack of strength to match up on key forwards makes him the extra in this. All this talk of him being a salary dump will come down to how much is actually owed on his contract and what the club wants to do as he could work his way up the order if he wants to stick around although I see North, Eagles and even the Swans looking at tall defensive options with the 1st 2 having plenty of salary cap room (Maybe Saints) Bulldogs need true key defenders and also I cant see it happening (salary wise and the rivalry)

Stone is another with question marks with his injury history and he may be another depending on where the coaches see him and if he has lost some of his speed. I am a big fan as he has the potential to be a damaging forward mid and a spot is open next year with Lloyd retiring so hopefully he does stay on and puts his injury history behind him and has a big pre season

Big call on the rucks with Flynn who I would like to see the club re-sign even if he only signs a 1 year contract including academy time he is around 13 years as a Giant and he is the ideal backup ruck with still some development left in him and having both some positive strengths and lack of some skills at AFL level that may improve . We will see if the club backs him of Preuss and also where other clubs rank them in terms of the offers that come in trade period in terms of draft picks if any and contract length
