Did we just fluff that?
It feels like we fluffed that.
The only real gripe you can have is that we essentially moved our picks for nothing given we omtraded the Crow Future 2nd rounder, but we got the players we were prioritising

It looks like we rated gothard highest and didn’t mind trading back a little for him, then were surprised leake was available so traded to get him

Essentially we got the players we were expecting, just in a roundabout way. There could be arguments made that we could've got more for the Curtin pick but I think we did alright :)

My gripe is we went with the wrong players. I understand not getting Curtin...but why not trade for Futures.
I'll almost certainly eat my words here but I'm not in love with our picks tonight.

I think I would be more at peace if we chose Leake at 10 and traded up to Wilson at 13. Gothard is a very typical GWS pick tbf but with McMullin, Jones, Peatling and arguably Stone developing alongside O'Halloran, Brown, Greene, Daniels and Bedford, the small forward role is probably not the go with our top pick. Not sure how far down the pecking order Phoenix would sit amongst that list.

With only Angwin and Wehr as wingers developing (neither of whom have really announced themselves), Wilson alongside Leake would have given us a more balanced list. Also helps us have the option to move Finn into the rover role in the next few years.

Can only see how the two boys develop now though. Hopefully both excel in our system 🤞

Not sure Stone still deserves to be getting discussed as a long-term piece for us, if it clicks for him great and it's been tough on him with all his injuries but ultimately he has to perform and so far he hasn't. Peatling is also fairly expendable once Jones, Leake, McMullin and Goth all develop. Little bit surprised they doubled up on forwards so inside the top 20 but there could be scope for Leake to be more of an on-baller long term which I assume will be explored quite a bit in the 2s.

I'm happy.
Had we just picked Leake at 7 and Gothard with 16 (ignoring bids) we'd have been happy with the haul.
We got those 2 Inna very complicated way. But got there none the less.
Did we trade our 2nd or Adelaide 's second

Exactly my thoughts. Even in Twomey's phantom draft that was what we were getting, we just went about it in a roundabout way. The only downside is having to give back that F2 from adelaide to avoid the saints from getting Leake, but that F2 is likely to be late thirties to early forties, so it isn't a massive loss

So you’ve just been selected by Geelong, given your jumper by club legend Joel Selwood, with his number no less, and you’re there chatting to the great man and then the next selection is read out…

I was wondering why the guy giving Phoenix the draft shirt had a Geelong jumper lying around to change into...

10 hours on and with the information that’s coming out I’m even more surprised by our strategy.

Honestly the moves we made were so dumb.

Unless Gothard plays next year and makes a large contribution the decision to take him and the Adelaide deal over the West Coast deal is beyond stupid. Taking him so high and then panicking on the next pick to give up the small leverage 🤦🏽‍♂️

I get people wanting to feel good saying they are nice players and we would have picked them anyway, but there is strategy in this and make no mistake we come away looking like the dumbest people in the room.

That’s my last on this debacle.

Seems like we had the chance to walk away with Leake and pick up the WC F1 and we opted for Gothard this year instead which I don't think is the right move, WC are very likely going to suck next year and it would've given us access to the top of a supposedly loaded midfield group next year. I really like Gothard and am definitely a fan but just don't think it was the right call to pass on that WC pick next year.

Something that makes it hard for us on the outside is we don’t hear about all the offers that aren’t accepted.
For example, Essendon gave Geelong pick 31 to get one pick in front of them (go from pick 11 to pick 10). This wasn’t because Geelong were going to choose Caddy. It’s because another club was offering Geelong something not as juicy to get that pick and take Caddy.
But we never hear what Geelong knocked back.
It would be the same with our selections. There would have been at least one club trying to get in front of us to get Gothard.

Once the players are in pre-season training, their respective draft number is immaterial.
Caruso targetted those 2 and succeeded.
James Leake will keep Isaac Cumming and Harry Perryman honest, Gothard will do the same for the small forward fleet.
How do they rate last years pick Max G? Will they pick a taller forward tonight?

Was the West Coast deal on the table as rumoured? Given how much expectation there was about them trading out of pick 1, I don't entirely trust rumours about West Coast this year.

Wouldn't surprise me if a deal, if there was one, was going to require sending more back - if we're all on here thinking it's too good to be true in the lead up, surely even West Coast would agree.

I think some people were floating WC F1 + something small for 7 + 16 or 7 + F1, which is not a great deal for us

I really don't understand the people complaining here.

We moved our 2 first round picks around (trading Adelaide's F2 in and back out in the process) and got exactly the players we wanted while giving up nothing in return.

Not sure how that can be seen as anything but a success.
Because we could have gotten those two players regardless but we were placed in a privileged position where there was competition for our pick and could have extracted a lot more out of the situation.

WCE did offer a straight swap (my mail) and were stunned we didn’t take it and mildly surprised Adelaide (given they have more list holes) didn’t bite either.

Leake was our projected first choice, he didn’t get selected by any team after that first pick which suggests we valued him more than others. St Kilda were always taking Wilson but we panicked and gave up collateral which meant we came out of the night with no benefit. That future could have even been used tonight to grab one of the kids we were looking at.

From the vision Gothard looks a very Richmond style of player, zippy, twitchy and with a full pre season should improve. Leake looks versatile, good mark, solid citizen: no argument with the players, the talent evaluators know more than anyone but the process was completely botched.
