Should have played Sodhi couldn’t have been worse than one of Southee/Ferguson
Win the toss and they have Southee and Ferguson bowling in that difficult first 10-15 over period under lights

This World Cup has seen less closer finishes for sure.

You do get alot more last over contested matches in T20s more now.
In 2019, 11 games were decided by 30 runs or less. The chasing team won in the last 3 overs and/or with 3 or less wickets remaining in 5 games. 16 games in total would be considered close games.

In 2023, the same parameters yield us 2 wins batting first and 8 batting second. 10 games in total that would be considered close.

Definite reduction.

Close wins to the team batting second are a bit harder to judge just on pure wickets and balls remaining as a lot of the time the chasing team cruises to the finish line with an inevitable under their belt, especially if it's close on balls remaining but they still have 5 or 6 wickets in the shed. I don't have time to go over each individual game, but the numbers above back up what the eye is telling us that there have been fewer close games and more blowouts in this World Cup.
