Obviously. What else would they do with their second rounder? They’ll split that into two separate picks and grab another. By the time the first round ends, almost half the national draft will be over.
So if you are a first round pick this year you are only in the top 50 percentile
Hardly elite

At the moment, the first round ends at pick 22. We know there are about six bids expected. So it could easily blow out to pick 28.

Only about 60 odd kids are expected to go in the national draft. Even if it reached 70, that would mean “first round” covers 40% of kids taken. If you ask me, the first round is the top eighteen, not the top twenty-eight.

Is Gold Coast allowed to match? I thought they were limited to 2 or 3 players because they were outside the side.

There was restrictions on matching a specific number if they made finals. I'd have to see if there was any restrictions given they didn't make finals. But nobody is talking about that they cant match a bid, that makes me think there is no restrictions

What about pick 16 in the old system where teams just got Father/Sons in the 3rd round?

Would the 16th pick in a draft where Tom Hawkins and Josh Kennedy are going in the 3rd round still count as a first round pick? Is it number based, or live pick based?

Gold Coast will match. But it’s a hint we’re after a midfielder.
I don't think so, unless they trade for more picks. They'll possibly go into debt after picking up Rogers with their third selection. Even if they aren't in debt yet, I doubt Graham is worth massively downgrading a first round pick next year for.

Can they trade in picks after a bid is made and before they match?

Not knowing Graham is a Suns academy player and thinking he's tied to Sydney is quite the howler, some research to broaden the knowledge is required I think.
Oh no, whatever will I do, I’m so embarrassed etc etc…

I hope that this has made you feel better about your sad lonely life Carl. Chin up champ.

You should be, you like to beat people over the head with your 'superior' knowledge only to discover you're not superior, like commenting on players you've just proven you don't know much about. Points for having a go though.

Sydney? You mean the suns?
Sydney for a team that is rarely bad, get to keep all their academy players with no competition, it's bullshite if im being honest. Every club outside victoria cries vic bias but gee the northern clubs get looked after very very well

That never happened for the Suns
Until its mathematically impossible, its always a chance, and they were a chance at the time. So the media of course had to make up an article of the dangers of missing the academy prospects if they did. And they were better off they didn't for many reasons.

I'm struggling to get excited about the draft given the discussion is firmly around the top 8 players and we've got what's considered as a late pick in this one.

That said, it feels like we've been linked to about 20 different players so far. Journalists and phantom drafters really hoping for the "told you so" moment.

Same, all you have to do is watch this year's group of players to realise there aren't many good ones after about 20. When they say 'evenness' it's just code for there's no depth.

Feels like the club is being a lot more tight lipped about who we like this year tbh. This time 12 months ago Ryan and Richards were all but locks to come to us if available, with only Allan being the unexpected pickup due to him slipping a bit.
This year god knows who we’re getting.

There was an article in the Mercury (Tasmanian newspaper) that Collingwood officials had flown into Burnie last Friday to meet with Local player Geordie Payne.

184 cm, Defender with Elite speed who takes the game on.
Hopefully not with our first pick

I’d be hoping they’re meeting with every player in Hines top 50-60 before the draft. It’s not just our 3x ND draft picks, but there are a couple of rookie spots as well.

I have watched a bit of Sam Van Rooyen same size as his brother with similar traits, impressed from what I have seen. He will go late/rookie, happily use our third on him. Anyone have vision of Sofronidis?

I'm interested. I think it's a draft where we're likely to pick a couple of speculative talls and there's a couple who look and sound pretty interesting.

I'm definitely interested, and I'll be glued to it on Monday/Tuesday. If we had our F1 I'd be even more glued in case we traded in.

But you're right, you'd think after winning the flag you're never in a better position to play with "house money" and take a swing at a speculative pick.

Unfortunately speculative picks for us aren't usually talks they're December birthdaters with limited exposure to the elite pathways!
