I'm not convinced yet. Must say from watching clips of training he looks to be showing some explosiveness out of stoppages which is a great sign. Hard to see him get huge midfield minutes still but who knows a couple injuries and he may get his chance to shine.

I'll wait until I see it happen at AFL level. If we are hyping blokes on VFL form then Burgess is winning the Coleman.

If he doesn't you have to think he will move somewhere else. It's just the way the ruck merry go round works unfortunately. We benefited from it with witts but may be on the other end of it with Moyle.
Some star 1, 2 ruck combos going around, only trouble is with a fwd line of King, Chol, Lukosius, Jeffery and Casboult on the sidelines, that's alot of tall timber there already. And Chol plays that 2nd ruck role extremely well.

For 5 minutes.
Here's hoping he swaps the Fiat 500 tank for the long range Landcruiser version over the pre-season
With a ruck like Witts we don't really need someone to chop him out much thankfully but that might change as Witta gets older.

I see a few knocks on Chol here. But I thought he did great! Kicked 40+ goals in his first full season of games in the AFL. Did well enough in the ruck when he went there. His highlights reel is exciting. He is also a marketable player for a number of reasons.

I personally like him more than Wright.

Yeah he could get more endurance, but I see him more as a burst player, rather than a run all game type. Plus he hasn’t had a long run at it before, so plenty of upside.

The fact he got goals in a number of way is a big tick for me (yes, many were out the back. But that is because he can beat his opponent in speed to get there and finish, much like King did). He can consistently impact a game with a goal or two.

The curious thing will be seeing King and Chol play together, as they are kind of similar in style and strengths (as well as weaknesses). If they can work together they can seriously stretch opposition defenders. King might be the better mark, but Chol was getting damn close to a Mark of the Year contender at times…

This is a very good take. I agree with everything you said.

I love him
Would just love him more if he had a tank

Witts had 83% TOG last year
So presumably Chol was rucking 15% of the game.

Chol had 80% TOG
So 65% of the game as a forward, 15% as a ruck.

Would love him to spend another 10% of the game up forward and on the field.
Especially when some of his ruck work is done in the forward 50. He has a laid back style, which can make him look a bit lazy at time.

He had a great first season imo, but being a bit fitter will surely benefit him.

It's also very helpful if your key position players have high TOG, allows for an extra couple of rotations in the midfield. Using Melbourne as an example May, Petty and Lever often have very high TOG, plus Langdon who is a freak of nature often is 100% TOG. Even Gawn is often near 90%. Means their mids/pressure players can keep spinning around in short bursts.

Tbf, Chol said himself late last season that he needed to get fitter. But seriously, could not have asked for any more in season 22. In my eyes a good fwd/ruck needs to be a good fwd first and foremost and then serviceable in the ruck. 40+ goals is a big tick as a fwd and then when rucking, often he's up against the opposition's 2nd ruck and I thought he looked incredible, especially against the athletic run and jump types.

So we have had some fun with the whole Flanders breakout season but who else do we think could be the big breakout players?
I've got a top 3 who I think will be the big improvers..
1. Rowell: already a very good contributor but I think with an injury free season he can recapture that complete inside/ outside midfield position that we seen early in his career.
2. Hollands: just going a little under noticed to a degree but I think he will be a star. Maybe still too early next year but think he can improve significantly and win the rising star.
3. Lukosius: some have written him off early but still think he becomes an a grade player. We need him getting as much ball as possible with his ability to assist others in the forward half, particularly with rankine not there.

Really hoping Graham is at the top of the list because a good key backman and we are considerably better, but not sure if that happens.

I think you are spot on with the first 2... Lukosius has some elite skills but I have doubts that he can be much more than an icing on the cake utility.

I think Jeffrey and Rosas can take another big step forward with Rankine's departure creating a bit more certainty around their roles and having had some good moments last year I can see them being solid contributors in 2023.
